Summer Of Code/Interns

2008-03-12 Thread Ancient123
I heard earlier ( I believe it was last month) that Openmoko was going to
try and take part in Google's Summer of code.
Has anything more happened with this? As a lowly college student, the idea
of getting to work for Openmoko
(with or without getting payed) sounds awesome.

Re: GSoC 2008: Call for ideas

2008-03-12 Thread Jens Fursund
As I am not an owner of a Neo myself, I do not if this has already been
done.
What about making it possible to listen music, and as a call comes in(and
you answer it), make the music pause. I know this is a small thing, though I
don't know how easy it is to implement, but I think it would be quite neat!

Best Regards,

Anyway i doubt anyone likes to turn the crank for at least 2 hours, to

You wouldn't want to reach 100% battery this way, but you might want to
crank for several minutes to send that important SMS you have to send, or
make a vital call.

Nice. So you'll only need a special cable do be able go charge and
usb-host at the same time?

As this cable is a custom one, might be an interesting addition to the
openmoko store that was being discussed on some other thread, so
hardware-challenged people like me can purchase it.

In the end this means: the 47k ID-R should be in the Y-adapter, and you
 may
use arbitrary usb-chargers (1A) with it for quick-charge. However the
OM-charger will most probably have an own 47k, so you can use it without
 the
Y-adapter.

Nokia smartphones run a completely different OS known as Symbian Series

If you can plug at time in dc power and usb periphals
whith a usb hub and a keyboard (it can be bluetooth
or usb!!) you can convert in few seconds a mobile

If we're talking about Skype, then Skype for Nokia N800 is more likely to

The operating system, Internet Tablet OS 2007 (also known as Maemo),

So, are there any issues with running software for this OS under OM?
is it just a matter of installing the correct dependencies - hildon,

You might compile software source for use on OM, with a little work to fix
dependencies.
However for sure you can not run precompiled binaries made for another
platform - e.g. skype.
Binaries are hw-dependent, starting with processor...

Maemo uses framebuffer instead of X, you will have to re-write GUI to

If planning on using a FreeRunner as phone over WiFi you're
better off finding some SIP VoIP provider than using Skype

Why use closed software if the open source alternative could

OpenMoko and accessories design

2008-03-12 Thread Etienne
Hello all,

I know that what I'm gonna ask for is coming in quite late regarding the state
of the design of the Neo, but still, I have to ask.

I can see quite an opportunity for the Freerunner to be a device around which
anybody can design additionnal accessories, thanks to the open philosophy
around it. I especially would like to see (or design myself) some kind of base
station like the ones existing for the iPod with high-quality loudspeakers.
Something like that would obviously provide a mean to recharge the phone
battery, but could also be designed to provide conference-call features around
the Freerunner.

However, from a mechanical point of view, I can see a major show-stopper, being
the fact that the Freerunner connectors are positionned on both sides of the
device, which leads to no solution to easily drop the device on a base station.
I know I'm asking for a big change, but is there any chance the layout can be
re-arranged so that the on/off button and the audio connector switch positions
in the Freerunner ?

Regards,

I also like very much to see a drop-in cradle for Freerunner, to charge, sync
with PC, and maybe have audio extension.
However i don't see a problem with headset connector
1) you won't need it for hands-free/conference, this is (should be) already
built in for NEO.
2) for HiFi-stereo the cradle may contain a usb-soundcard. Maybe it's a little
tricky to have a soundcard-usb-client and a PC-usb-host connected to NEO at
the same time, but if all else fails, there are USB-host2host solutions
commonly used to create a usb-based network of 2 PCs.

Chances to see any kind of changes in layout of GTA02 PCB/housing are *very*
low i think.

I do totally agree with this, btw a skype client could be useful to
contact friends (both by voice and by chatting) that are using the skype
client on different platforms.
I use skype really few times, but I must admit that is the easier way to
talk with a friend using (a bad and proprietary implementation of) VoIP.
