I have a problem with identical symptoms - a complete freeze of the system. It
occurs when I insert a, integral 128MB USB 2.0 Flash Drive into my laptop USB
port.

This worked fine with Mandrake 9.1. It also works fine with Knoppix 3.2 on the
same system. Under Mandrake 9.2 (2.4.22-10mdk) it immediately freezes the whole
laptop - the only thing I can do is power off and nothing is written to any logs.

The computer freeze completly when I connect my Sony camera (see below for
reference), this was not the behavior until the 9.1 mdk (must have start
between 9.0 and the begining of cooker for the 9.1).

Upgrade to 14/09/03 cooker
uname -r returns : 2.4.22-0.1mdk
modeprobe usb-storage is working fine
USB system install : usb-uhci and ehci_hcd

usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver
ehci_hcd 00:1d.7: Intel Corp. 82801DB USB2
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 4
ehci_hcd 00:1d.7: USB 2.0 enabled, EHCI 1.00, driver 2003-Jun-19/2.4
hub.c: USB hub found

Got installed SCSI with Adaptec 79xx card.
Deep deep freeze of the computer at the connection (nor the magic keys or
anything is working, just hard reset), no output on both message.

Same equipment with mdk 9.0 ( and uname -r returns 2.4.19-16mdk)
is working properly (just need to modeprobe and mount the usb storage).

[Cooker] Promise SX6000 installation

2002-05-10 Thread Iain McClatchie

I'm attempting to install Mandrake Linux 8.2 and Windows XP
onto a system with an SX6000 RAID as the boot disk.

I know, I know, if I were just running Linux, I'd use the
software RAID. But I'm not. I need a RAID that can be seen
and used by both XP and Linux, (they have to see a common
filesystem) so I went with hardware.

The question is, how do I get it installed? Clearly Mandrake 8.2
doesn't come with the module for the SX6000 installed. Promise
doesn't have a precompiled module for Mandrake Linux, but they
do give out the source code. So my impression is that I've got
to compile the Promise driver as a module for the Mandrake install
kernel, and then get the installer to use that module during the
install.

Q1: How do I compile the Promise driver for Mandrake Linux 8.2?
I assume this involves getting /usr/src/linux on some other
machine to look like Mandrake Linux, then getting the Promise
driver compiled as a module. What is the right set up?

Q2: How do I get the installer to load the SX6000 module?
This must have something to do with pressing F1 while the
installer is booting up, then passing arguments to it from
that prompt. What arguments do I use?

Thanks for any help.
