Bug#958788: blueman: broken dependency on iptables

2020-04-25 Thread Pierre Thierry
Package: blueman
Version: 2.1.2-1+b1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

iptables 1.8.4-3 doesn't contain /sbin/iptables anymore, which breaks blueman.
On startup, I get the following error:

Bug#829078: Confusing status

2016-08-25 Thread Pierre Thierry
While you try to patch the problem itself, maybe an interim patch to
get a more informative status would also greatly help. As for now,
systemclt says the service is "active" when it actually didn't start
and absolutely no information is available in the logs.

● elasticsearch.service - LSB: Starts elasticsearch
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/elasticsearch; generated; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (exited) since jeu. 2016-08-18 03:40:52 CEST; 1s ago
 Docs: man:systemd-sysv-generator(8)
  Process: 26542 ExecStop=/etc/init.d/elasticsearch stop (code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS)
  Process: 26549 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/elasticsearch start (code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS)

When starting the daemon by hand, I got the YAMLException and a 130
error code, so I'm wondering why those processes are said to have
exited with code 0.

Regards,
Pierre

Bug#530741: set all my mails marked NEW as OLD

2009-05-27 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Package: kmail
Version: 4:4.2.2-1
Severity: critical

I'm using mutt to read my emails and kontact to use a variety of PIM
application, especially for my calendar and contacts, occasionnally
taking notes (but not email).

Today I opened kontact and it complained about many .summary files not
being up to date, and just after that, all my mails previously marked
NEW in the Maildirs in ~/Mail were suddenly marked OLD instead, which is
a huge loss of information for me (I now have to browse them all to try
and recover which mails I already have read or not).

How come kmail's component in kontact MODIFIED my data without me using
it?! And why such a nonsensical modification?!

Bug#530741: set all my mails marked NEW as OLD

2009-05-27 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Scribit Modestas Vainius dies 27/05/2009 hora 16:14:
If ~/Mail is where kmail is set up to store your mails, what do you
 expect?

I used kmail a bit, ages ago, so maybe this setup was just carried
through various upgrades. Still, what is the meaning of turning all my
nex mails into old ones without me even seeing their subject?

I see that you could not have known kmail defaults but I don't think
this is only kmail fault, it is also a user error as both applications
are set up to use the same folder for mail storage.

Couldn't the two applications be nice to each other? mutt wouldn't do
any modifications to the mail storage without a clear request from the
user, I'd like the same behaviour from kmail.

Hence I believe the severity should be lowered but I'm not doing it
 just now.

Kmail's current behaviour combined with me having used before led me to
lose a whole lot of valuable information, without even asking anything
from kmail, so I still think the severity is that high, but I'm
obviously biased, as I'm pissed by what happened, so you should have the
final word.

Quickly,
Pierre

Bug#464726:

2008-03-18 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Scribit Nigel McNie dies 19/03/2008 hora 16:07:
 What part is still broken?

I purged mahara packages and installed them back. The default server
name was 'mahara', and the /etc/mahara/servername.conf file contains:

ServerName mahara

Yet, when I go to http://localhost/, I got a page from Mahara, and thus
every other page I had available at that web server returns a 404.

So this package still totally breaks unrelated packages on installation,
with its default settings.

I still don't get why you don't setup mahara like most other packagers
do, as it is much more safe.

Bug#469463: karm: Goes back too much after inactivity

2008-03-05 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Package: karm
Version: 4:3.5.8-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

I Had some task at about 10 hours, then left it running without doing
anything at the system. When I came back 5 hours later, karm had
detected I was inactive for the past 5 hours, and I choose to go back
and continue timing, but then the tasks total time was down to 3 hours.
In some other case, it after 6 hours of inactivity, the time went down
from 12 hours to -33 hours...

Bug#464726: More info

2008-02-11 Thread Pierre THIERRY
/etc/mahara/servername.conf contains the following:

 8
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE! It is managed by debconf!
# It will be overwritten the next time this package is configured.
# Use 'dpkg-reconfigure mahara-apache2' instead.
ServerName localhost
 8

Note that if I do `dpkg-reconfigure -plow mahara-apache2`, I'm only
asked one question about a redirection, and even if I let the answer
empty, the ServerName remains localhost.

I'm no expert at apache configuration semantics, but it seemed to me
that having a

VirtalHost *

section should change apache's configuration globally (thus srewing the
local admin's configuration).

That's why most other files in /etc/apache2/conf.d just define an Alias
(sometimes even commented) and change configuration with Directory
sections.

Doubtfully,
Pierre

Could we add a big fat warning about these savegame incompatibilities?

I really think it's utterly stupid to design any program that saves data
and won't be able to load it later. The most clean way to prevent this
is to embed a version in the saved data and keep code that is able to
load any version that has been in used. When it's not doable or
sensible, at least provide a conversion tool...

It's about losing data of the user, so this is a RC bug.

A fat warning at the start of the game would be great, so you don't play
while thinking you're able to save and load later.

Bug#418653: failed XFS mount was impossible to abort

2007-04-10 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Package: linux-image-2.6.17-2-k7
Version: 2.6.17-9
Severity: serious

After doing an LVM snapshot of my /home, I tried to mount it with the
nouuid option, as it is XFS. The mount process stopped in an
uninterruptable sleep for a long time (many minutes). It was impossible
to kill it, even with the KILL signal, and using umount, even with the
-f or -l option, just returned the error message not mounted.

The dmesg output last 3 lines were:

Filesystem dm-22: Disabling barriers, not supported by the underlying device
XFS mounting filesystem dm-22
Starting XFS recovery on filesystem: dm-22 (logdev: internal)

Neither halt, nor reboot nor shutdown had any effect, I had to use the

snapshot succeeded as usual.

Bug#376434: evolution marked all my mails as old

2006-07-02 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Package: evolution
Version: 2.6.1-3
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

I tracked down that evolution, after being launched by accident
(clicking on a mailto: URL in Firefox), not only stayed running after I
quit it, but screwed up my maildirs.

It regularily moved all my new mail into old mails.

As I was using the distinction between new and old as a very important
information (sort of urgent task marker), I lost a bunch of information,
not only the mere information about which mails of just taken a look at
and which I didn't read at all yet.

Why did it keep running after being shut down by the user, and why the
hell did he does such an incredibly useless thing as constantly moving
all new mail to old?!

Bug#340608: fai: nfsroot should not be in /usr

2005-11-25 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Scribit Steve Langasek dies 25/11/2005 hora 00:56:
According to the FHS, ``/usr is shareable, read-only data''. So FAI
should not by default try to write anything in /usr and place it's
  nfsroot there. See #309554.
Could you elaborate on why you believe this is an FHS violation?

My /usr is only rw when doing dpkg operations. After having successfully
installed the fai packaged, running the fai-setup -v fails because /usr
is again ro.

I think the fact that a user-triggered operation has to write in /usr is
the point why there is FHS violation.

Is the fai nfsroot not shareable, or is it not read-only? (I would
expect an nfsroot image to be both...)

It is not read-only, at least for the -k option of fai-setup, that
install a new kernel in the nfsroot. So the nfsroot is clearly a
read-write object the user can modify and update... It belongs either to
/var or /srv (the latter I prefer, as it is clearly data for a service
exposed by the system).

Scribit Thomas Lange dies 25/11/2005 hora 15:34:
My future plans are to move it to /srv, but the question is, if it's
 really a FHS violation.

nfsroot can be updated, regenerated, modified to fit the user's needs,
and so on. I don't see how it can really be seen read-only. So it can't
be in /usr.

I'm also wondering, why there are currently no Debian packages using
/srv. I hesitate to be the first package using /srv.

Heck, don't hesitate! Or maybe do (cf. after)... :-/

Maybe an answer is people do some things only were forced to do so. /srv
is a great innovation of the FHS, I think, but many maintainers I asked
to use it answer it was not mandatory. Indeed, the 3.6.2 policy only
mandates FHS 2.1, but /srv was added in 2.3.

The problem is, strictly speaking, using /srv would not be policy
compliant, I think, because there is no mention of /srv in the currently
included FHS. Maybe you should just usr /var/lib/fai and just be
prepared to switch to /srv/fai when possible.

Scribit Stephen Gran dies 25/11/2005 hora 15:19:
My understanding is that while /srv is the right place for this kind
of data, it would be incorrect for Debian packages to dump stuff
there. /srv is the domain of the local admin.

This is precisely why it should be put there by fai-setup. fai-setup is
not run by the system, but by the user, byt the adminstrator who sets up
it's FAI.

fai-setup

is for FAI more or less like

svnadmin create /srv/svn/foo

for Subversion.

I agree packages should not touch /srv much, if any, but commands run by
the user to create and modify data served by the system are perfectly
fine touching /srv...

According to the FHS, ``/usr is shareable, read-only data''. So FAI
should not by default try to write anything in /usr and place it's
nfsroot there. See #309554.

Bug#340609: fai: /mnt2 not FHS compliant

2005-11-24 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Package: fai
Version: 2.8.4
Severity: serious
Justification: FHS

According to the FHS, the /mnt directory is the place where a temporary
mount should be done. At least, the / directory should not be the place
where a custom FAI directory is created. AFAIK, /media is the perfect
place.

This is a bug I can't reproduce everytime. For now, I have a situation

I couldn't reproduce the problem.

When I edit a file with ACLs and save it (:w), the ACLs are lost. The

Bug#329814: apt-cache doesn't differentiate sources that share protocol, host, release and archive name

2005-09-23 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Package: apt
Version: 0.5.28.6
Severity: serious
Tags: security
Justification: User can think he's installing Debian software when he's not

When multiple sources are used with APT that are hosted on the same host
with the same protocol, and also share combinations of release and
archive (e.g. etch/main), apt-cache policy shows their packages in a
identical form. That has lead me to think that mplayer and transcode had
been accepted in Debian and install a non-official package of ffmpeg,
because I had Christian Marillat's source in my sources.list.

Thus, any source on a server of an official Debian source that contain
packages without security fixes or with additional security holes, whose
version is higher than Debian official packages will lead the user to an
unprotected situation, even if he is cautious of what packages he
installs, in terms of security.

Bug#300767: r-doc-html: HTML documents in /usr/lib/R/doc/manual are loop symlinks

2005-03-22 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Scribit Dirk Eddelbuettel dies 21/03/2005 hora 20:49:
You better check again. You may have a problem with your /usr/share/doc
hierarchy, or something else is going one.

I don't see the point. The files are in /usr/lib, and are symlinks on
themselves. Why would it be a /usr/share/doc issue?

BTW, I purged the package and installed it, and everything's fine. I
don't understand. Is it possible that something was wrong in a
maintainer's script, something dealing with configuration files? (I had
resintalled it two times before, the dangling symlinks were still there)

Strangely,

Bug#298351: udev: Bad permissions for all devices render system unusable or mostly so

2005-03-06 Thread Pierre THIERRY
Package: udev
Version: 0.053-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

After boot, udev creates all device nodes with owner and group root, and
permissions rw-rw, so noone can read nor write in any device. Thus
it is impossible to login to KDE (screen disappears and then KDM comes
back) and login in tty[1-6] is possible, but one see a bunch of errors
on trying to write to /dev/null (and then bash completion triggers
plenty of them).

I could use the system by stopping udev and use ./MAKEDEV generic to
restore a usable /dev.

I attach my local rules (they shouldn't be the source of the problem
since they didn't change for a long time).
