Bug#829078: Confusing status
While you try to patch the problem itself, maybe an interim patch to get a more informative status would also greatly help. Bug#530741: set all my mails marked NEW as OLD
Package: kmail Version: 4:4.2.2-1 Severity: critical I'm using mutt to read my emails and kontact to use a variety of PIM application, especially for my calendar and contacts, occasionnally taking notes (but not email). Today I opened kontact and it complained about many .summary files not being up to date, and just after that, all my mails previously marked NEW in the Maildirs in ~/Mail were suddenly marked OLD instead, which is a huge loss of information for me (I now have to browse them all to try and recover which mails I already have read or not). How come kmail's component in kontact MODIFIED my data without me using it?! Bug#530741: set all my mails marked NEW as OLD
Scribit Modestas Vainius dies 27/05/2009 hora 16:14: If ~/Mail is where kmail is set up to store your mails, what do you expect? I used kmail a bit, ages ago, so maybe this setup was just carried through various upgrades. Still, what is the meaning of turning all my nex mails into old ones without me even seeing their subject? I see that you could not have known kmail defaults but I don't think this is only kmail fault, it is also a user error as both applications are set up to use the same folder for mail storage. Couldn't the two applications be nice to each other? mutt wouldn't do any modifications to the mail storage without a clear request from the user, I'd like the same behaviour from kmail. Hence I believe the severity should be lowered but I'm not doing it just now. Kmail's current behaviour combined with me having used before led me to lose a whole lot of valuable information, without even asking anything from kmail, so I still think the severity is that high, but I'm obviously biased, as I'm pissed by what happened, so you should have the final word. ServerName localhost 8 Note that if I do `dpkg-reconfigure -plow mahara-apache2`, I'm only asked one question about a redirection, and even if I let the answer empty, the ServerName remains localhost. I'm no expert at apache configuration semantics, but it seemed to me that having a VirtalHost * section should change apache's configuration globally (thus srewing the local admin's configuration). Package: linux-image-2.6.17-2-k7 Version: 2.6.17-9 Severity: serious After doing an LVM snapshot of my /home, I tried to mount it with the nouuid option, as it is XFS. Bug#376434: evolution marked all my mails as old
Package: evolution Version: 2.6.1-3 Severity: critical Justification: causes serious data loss I tracked down that evolution, after being launched by accident (clicking on a mailto: URL in Firefox), not only stayed running after I quit it, but screwed up my maildirs. Bug#340608: fai: nfsroot should not be in /usr
Scribit Steve Langasek dies 25/11/2005 hora 00:56: According to the FHS, ``/usr is shareable, read-only data''. So FAI should not by default try to write anything in /usr and place it's nfsroot there. See #309554. Could you elaborate on why you believe this is an FHS violation? My /usr is only rw when doing dpkg operations. After having successfully installed the fai packaged, running the fai-setup -v fails because /usr is again ro. I think the fact that a user-triggered operation has to write in /usr is the point why there is FHS violation. Is the fai nfsroot not shareable, or is it not read-only? (I would expect an nfsroot image to be both...) It is not read-only, at least for the -k option of fai-setup, that install a new kernel in the nfsroot. So the nfsroot is clearly a read-write object the user can modify and update... It belongs either to /var or /srv (the latter I prefer, as it is clearly data for a service exposed by the system). Bug#340608: fai: nfsroot should not be in /usr
Scribit Thomas Lange dies 25/11/2005 hora 15:34: My future plans are to move it to /srv, but the question is, if it's really a FHS violation. nfsroot can be updated, regenerated, modified to fit the user's needs, and so on. I don't see how it can really be seen read-only. So it can't be in /usr. I'm also wondering, why there are currently no Debian packages using /srv. I hesitate to be the first package using /srv. Heck, don't hesitate! Or maybe do (cf. after)... :-/ Maybe an answer is people do some things only were forced to do so. /srv is a great innovation of the FHS, I think, but many maintainers I asked to use it answer it was not mandatory. Indeed, the 3.6.2 policy only mandates FHS 2.1, but /srv was added in 2.3. The problem is, strictly speaking, using /srv would not be policy compliant, I think, because there is no mention of /srv in the currently included FHS. Maybe you should just usr /var/lib/fai and just be prepared to switch to /srv/fai when possible. Bug#340608: fai: nfsroot should not be in /usr
Scribit Stephen Gran dies 25/11/2005 hora 15:19: My understanding is that while /srv is the right place for this kind of data, it would be incorrect for Debian packages to dump stuff there. /srv is the domain of the local admin. This is precisely why it should be put there by fai-setup. fai-setup is not run by the system, but by the user, byt the adminstrator who sets up it's FAI. fai-setup is for FAI more or less like svnadmin create /srv/svn/foo for Subversion. I agree packages should not touch /srv much, if any, but commands run by the user to create and modify data served by the system are perfectly fine touching /srv... Bug#329814: apt-cache doesn't differentiate sources that share protocol, host, release and archive name
Package: apt Version: 0.5.28.6 Severity: serious Tags: security Justification: User can think he's installing Debian software when he's not When multiple sources are used with APT that are hosted on the same host with the same protocol, and also share combinations of release and archive (e.g. etch/main), apt-cache policy shows their packages in a identical form. (I had resintalled it two times before, the dangling symlinks were still there) Strangely, Nowhere man -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] OpenPGP 0xD9D50D8A signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#298351: udev: Bad permissions for all devices render system unusable or mostly so
Let's start from upgrading to 0.054-2. Didn't correct anything. I started udev and it created nodes with the same owner, group and perms as previously. Quickly, Nowhere man -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] OpenPGP 0xD9D50D8A signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#298351: udev: Bad permissions for all devices render system unusable or mostly so
Package: udev Version: 0.053-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system After boot, udev creates all device nodes with owner and group root, and permissions rw-rw, so noone can read nor write in any device. Thus it is impossible to login to KDE (screen disappears and then KDM comes back) and login in tty[1-6] is possible, but one see a bunch of errors on trying to write to /dev/null (and then bash completion triggers plenty of them). I could use the system by stopping udev and use ./MAKEDEV generic to restore a usable /dev. I attach my local rules (they shouldn't be the source of the problem since they didn't change for a long time). -- Package-specific info: -- /etc/udev/rules.d/: /etc/udev/rules.d/: total 1 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 277 2005-02-22 12:16 10local lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2004-12-05 16:27 50udev - ../udev.rules -- /sys/: /sys/block/dm-0/dev /sys/block/dm-1/dev /sys/block/dm-2/dev /sys/block/dm-3/dev /sys/block/dm-4/dev /sys/block/dm-5/dev /sys/block/fd0/dev /sys/block/hda/dev /sys/block/hdd/dev /sys/block/hdd/hdd1/dev /sys/block/hdd/hdd2/dev /sys/block/hdd/hdd3/dev /sys/block/ram0/dev /sys/block/ram10/dev /sys/block/ram11/dev /sys/block/ram12/dev /sys/block/ram13/dev /sys/block/ram14/dev /sys/block/ram15/dev /sys/block/ram1/dev /sys/block/ram2/dev /sys/block/ram3/dev /sys/block/ram4/dev /sys/block/ram5/dev /sys/block/ram6/dev /sys/block/ram7/dev /sys/block/ram8/dev /sys/block/ram9/dev /sys/block/sda/dev /sys/block/sdb/dev /sys/block/sdb/sdb1/dev /sys/block/sdb/sdb2/dev /sys/block/sdb/sdb3/dev /sys/block/sr0/dev /sys/class/drm/radeon/dev /sys/class/input/event0/dev /sys/class/input/event1/dev /sys/class/input/event2/dev /sys/class/input/event3/dev /sys/class/input/event4/dev /sys/class/input/event5/dev /sys/class/input/mice/dev /sys/class/input/mouse0/dev /sys/class/input/mouse1/dev /sys/class/input/ts0/dev /sys/class/input/ts1/dev /sys/class/misc/agpgart/dev /sys/class/misc/device-mapper/dev /sys/class/misc/psaux/dev /sys/class/misc/rtc/dev /sys/class/printer/lp0/dev /sys/class/sound/adsp/dev /sys/class/sound/audio/dev /sys/class/sound/controlC0/dev /sys/class/sound/dsp/dev /sys/class/sound/mixer/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D0c/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D0p/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D1c/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D1p/dev /sys/class/sound/timer/dev /sys/class/usb/hiddev0/dev -- Kernel configuration: -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-1-386 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages udev depends on: ii hotplug 0.0.20040329-17 Linux Hotplug Scripts ii initscripts 2.86.ds1-1 Standard scripts needed for bootin ii libc62.3.2.ds1-20GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii makedev 2.3.1-75Creates device files in /dev ii sed 4.1.2-8 The GNU sed stream editor -- debconf information excluded -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] OpenPGP 0xD9D50D8A BUS=ide, KERNEL=hda, NAME=dvdrom KERNEL=fd*, NAME=floppy%e BUS=scsi, SYSFS{model}=jaz 1GB*, KERNEL=sd*, NAME{all_partitions}=jaz BUS=scsi, SYSFS{model}=CD-W516EB*, NAME=cdrw BUS=usb, SYSFS{manufacturer}=M-Sys, SYSFS{product}=DiskOnKey, NAME=key signature.asc Description: Digital signature
