Re: [digitalradio] Re: Digital OPS: QRP Battery Portable

2010-05-01 Thread Tony

Andy,

Nice laptop - wish I had one of those! The mini Acer runs ok with DM780
and Multipsk, but the eyes do get a tired of looking at the tiny fonts.
The battery lasts a long time though so that's a plus.

Speaking of batteries, I can usually get 2 hours of air time out of the
FT-897D and it's twin 4500 mAh batteries. The setup works well, but I'm
sure there are cheaper / better ways to get the most bang for the buck.

The PY1AHD Alexloop continues to amaze me; working Europeans QRP with a
hand-held loop that's only 3 feet in diameter is something only a ham
would appreciate. It turned out to be a pretty good multi-band
alternative to portable dipoles and verticals.

I recorded a short video of the first CW DX contacts with the loop back
in August 2009. It was right before a contest so the big guns were out
in force.

I'll record some digital mode videos this weekend; the weather is
supposed to be nice so I should get some backyard portable air time.

Interesting Tony. I just got my ham software installed on my company
laptop (takes the IT folks a while). I have Multipsk, Fldigi,
HRD/DM780, Microkeyer device router, SpectraVue and SDR-Radio Console
all working nicely . It's a fairly big laptop rather than a
mini-netbook, 17 inch screen (wide screen too) . So, I really do need
to do as you suggest, get a station that can use the laptop for QRP
operations via battery rather than AC or generator power. I need to
get a rig to do this though, will have to start looking around for
bargains.

By the way, the Centrino Duo 1.8 CPU, in the laptop handles Multipsk
in SDR Direct mode with RS ID, handles the demand well just 20% CPU use.

FIRST QSO ON 500KHz USING ROS 30 April

First qso on 500 KHz using ros , G0NBD and G4WGT , initially using 500/16
and then eme , reducing tx power , the level that the eme mode started to
fail was in technical terms `just silly' reducing the tx to 3 watts
carrier power then via a 20 dB attenuator down to 30 mW to a 35 ft top
loaded Ae that needs round 50/75 watts to produce 100 mW erp , ie approx
500 : 1 reduction …….. reception 30 miles away by a similar Ae , then
produced 100 % copy , depending on local noise level …

Later in the evening , M0BMU called G0NBD at 500/8 , a range of 200 miles
, then follower at 100% qso over some 30 mins ending round 0010 local

I agree with you. I don't see any merit in doing on the amateur bands what

they are by keying their call into your radio is not what ham radio is about,
in my view. I already have a radio that can reach people wherever they are.
 It's called a cellphone.

I'm afraid that technology is starting to take the magic out of radio. RF is
being reduced to a means of connecting someone to a network that guarantees
reliable communication. That isn't what attracted me into this hobby 40 years
 ago.

and for wreaking havoc with fellow users of VHF/UHF amateur bands given a

running analog FM users away just because commercial gov't users have had
the change to digital crammed down their throat would be a very bad idea.
If it can peacefully co-exist with current users- then no problem! As a
potential user I confess that I'm not terribly interested in digital modes
up here. Adding more specialized equipment has no appeal nor any advantage
to my operating style. HF digital is much more exciting useful to me.
(YMMV) My greatest fear is that someone in an urban upper 5% utilization
zone might find a listening ear in the FCC who would recklessly force a
draconian change to make us all go 100% digital VHF above- even for the
95% who have no trouble finding available analog freq's. This is ham radio
after all- not hard core government EmComm! (Which is I suppose STILL
waiting to see how beneficial the move will prove to be for them)

One other comment: Tactical ham frequencies??!!! What in the world??? For
ham SWAT teams? LOL Didn't Indianapolis PD get into trouble for less than
  that? :-)

Thanks Andy...

I was wondering if you had a particular portable rig in mind? I could be
wrong, but it seems there are only 3 battery powered HF rigs on the
market today; the Icom 703, Yaesu 817 and the Yaesu FT-897.

All of them have low current drain for longer battery life. The Icom 703
for example, uses 300ma in standby mode while the 706 uses 1.8 amps. The
703 uses 450ma with the audio set on maximum while the 706 uses 2.0 amps.

I guess it doesn't matter much if the rig requires higher current as
long as the external battery pack has enough reserve to give you a few
hours of air time. The low current rigs will always get more air time
with the same pack though so it's something to consider.

[digitalradio] Hamvention D-STAR Activities

2010-05-01 Thread Mark Thompson

D-STAR at Dayton Hamvention

During the Hamvention several D-STAR events resources will be available.

D-STAR Digital Voice repeaters in Dayton are sponsored by DARA (Dayton
Amateur Radio Association), the host of the Hamvention.

Dayton D-STAR Repeaters

145.270 (+600 KHz) W8BI C
Accessible outdoors at Hamvention® HARA Arena with a handheld at 0.5 watts may
be marginal so higher power is recommended.

444.0875 (+ 5MHz) W8BI B
70 cm repeater has limited range.

Dayton D-STAR Repeater Reflector Linking
Hamvention received approval from the D-STAR Reflector REF030B to link a W8BI
D-STAR over the Hamvention® weekend.
The repeater was linked last year as well using a different reflector. A
reflector allows all repeaters DV Dongles linked to it communicate as a
group.
D-STAR activity in Dayton over Hamvention® weekend can be followed by using a
repeater or DV Dongle linked to the 30-B reflector
instead of linking directly to the W8BI gateway.

Hamvention D-STAR Repeaters
At the Hamvention Icom has D-STAR digital voice 2m, 70cm 23cm digital voice
repeaters radios on demonstration and
the repeaters may be connected to the D-STAR network. The callsigns
frequencies of the demonstration repeaters will be available at the Hamvention.
