Re: [digitalradio] Re: ALE 400

2010-05-20 Thread KH6TY

Howard,

There is no installer, so why should there be an unistaller! Please read
the Multipsk help to understand how simple it is to run Multipsk. You
can install it in a directory, or just run multipsk.exe from the
unzipped folder. Nothing could be simpler, and even installers
sometimes get it wrong. I prefer the Multipsk approach, because there is
nothing to go wrong, regardless of what your computer system
configuration is.

With all due respect, I think you have it backwards - Multipsk is the
MOST professional software available to us as amateurs- more modes
than any, and all work well. You have ALE400 and RSID, both of which
were invented by the author and both work without a hitch.

Please get it right - just say you don't personally like the GUI, but to
claim the software is unprofessional, just because the presentation is
different from other PSK31 or multimode programs, is completely wrong,
in my opinion. However, if you feel that way, please consider that we
all are AMATEURS, not professionals and Multipsk is FREE for AMATEUR
use - not for sale like many other PSK31 and multimode programs, many
written by professionals in the programming or computer field.

As you say, you can't get past the GUI to use the program. That is sad,
because you are missing out on all the fun using ALE400 and RSID, as
well as other programs in Multipsk that are not in any other ham program.

Hello Howard,

MultiPSK = Yick Ugg, can't stand to even look at the user interface.
I dont understand Yick Ugg but I suppose that it is not a compliment.

In French, we say Les goƻts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas. It means
that if you don't like it you don't use it, that's all. No need to impose
your taste.

But you give me the opportunity to expose the reason of the interface.
I do it the way that corresponds to my needs (and I hope it corresponds to
some other needs):
* quick access to modes and options without going to menus,

* except for some complex modes as Packet or ALE, all the options concerning
a mode are directly available using buttons,

* as I have no much memory (in my mind not in the PC), many buttons have a
hint (i.e. after 1/2 s, mouse cursor over the button) which is, in fact, a
contextual help,

* many buttons give access to a context sensitive help (i.e. mouse cursor
over the button, clicking on the right button of the mouse calls the
concerned help),

Note: I do this way because I noted that it is really complex to have a
pertinent information, through the help, with professional softs as WORD.
And the result is that almost nobody uses the Word manual.

Now each one must choose according to his/her needs. And it'a a good thing
to have a diversity of softs.

Where the uninstaller?
UNINSTALLATION OF THE MULTIPSK AND CLOCK APPLICATIONS
As there is no change in the Windows registers base, these applications
can be uninstalled manually (with Windows Explorer) by deleting the folder
containing the Multipsk and Clock files.

I suppose he can't imagine anyone ever wanting to uninstall his software?
This is the most unprofessional software I have ever seen.
No need either to be agressive. It's just a soft.
Why don't you try to program a decoding/coding soft ? It's pleasant!

The minimum S/N is around -12 dB. It is comparable to the minimum S/N for
Olivia 32-1000 or Olivia 8-500.
However, below -11 dB, repetitions begin.

Re: [digitalradio] Re: ALE-400 - Keyboard mode / ALE

2009-10-12 Thread Tony
Andy,

**However, if ALE-400 ARQ is getting through with error free throughput, what
are the chances that Olivia or Thor or some faster mode is getting through with
much faster throughput and a only a few errors ? Other than a wider bandwidth,
the other mode may turn out more efficient.**

That's a good question. If you first start by configuring Olivia and Thor to
match ALE-400s 60 wpm speed, you wind up with three modes that have similar
minimum signal-to-noise figures and more or less the same robust HF channel
characteristics.

Running faster versions of Olivia or Thor to surpass ALE-400's speed would
decrease the robust quality of those modes even further causing an even greater
number of throughput errors. At that point it comes down to whether the print
is still readable with the non-ARQ modes under the conditions you mentioned.

It's probably a bit simplistic, but I believe the ARQ in ALE-400 can have an
advantage over other modes in an apples-to-apples comparison because it
constantly checks for throughput errors every few seconds and corrects them as
it 'rides' the band changes.

When you compare this to non-ARQ modes with similar HF channel characteristics,
you realize that a lot of print can be sent by a long-winded operator who is
unaware that a large percentage of his message is not making it through; until
he turns it over. By that time it's too late and the message needs to be
repeated. With ALE-400, checks and balances are made in a matter of seconds for
error-free print.

Another unique aspect of ALE-400 is it's bilateral operation. Since both
stations can type at the same time, text from each station passes
back-and-forth ever few seconds allowing the conversation to change directions
quickly if need be. The bilateral wpm rate is 85 wpm or 42wpm each way; the
standard is 60 wpm unilateral.

*I'm waiting for a development where some sort of hand shake or RS-ID
initiation at the
beginning of a QSO establishes the current SNR. Then on your screen up pops a
messages that says... based on the SNR of -11dB THOR11 is recommended, do you
want to switch ?

That would be something Andy.
