If it’s only some transactions you’ve probably set a day threshold on the book.
Go to File>Properties. It’s on the account tab. Set it to 0 if you don’t want
to make some transactions read-only.

Help requested - delete a transaction

2017-10-20 Thread Herndon Elliott
Some of my transactions have been somehow marked "read only" and when I try
to delete them, the app wont let me. How do I remove the "read only"
setting?

Same thing for an account, if it has read only transactions, the account
wont delete. The user guide does not seem to have any info about read only
transactions.

Hi Lorrie,

I suggest you create a "GnuCash" folder in your "Documents" folder and copy
your gnucash files there - that way your log files don't clutter up your
desktop.

OK, so I removed the Gnucash that was in my applications folder and mover the
Gnucash-2-6.18 in. I double clicked on that and I get the Gnucash window that
pops up the the small window that says free accounting software. But I still
get that the file/URI/users... cannot be found. I tried launching from the
Gnucash icon on my desk top and I get the same thing.
I don’t know what you mean by You will either need to replace it, or File Open

Hi,

I don't use a Mac, so this is based on what I've read over the years on the
list...

You are on the right path, but not far enough along it.

When the "can't find file" dialogue box appears, close it, then go File->Open
and navigate to the folder with your data files in it. look for
.gnucash not any of the backups with the string of digits, nor the
.log or .LCK files. ( is what you originally called the datafile)

Re: loan account issue

2017-10-20 Thread DaveC49
The bank considers its loan to you as an asset, the fees and interest charges
to the loan account are income to the bank, so the offset account for the
bank for these transactions is an income account. These transactionsto the
asset :loan account of the bank will increase the value of their asset, i.e.
they will be debits.

Your payments to the bank on the other hand decrease the value of one asset
of theirs, their loan to you, and increase the value of of another asset of
theirs, their cash holdings. As these decrease their asset they will be
credits to that account

Their statement to you only contains the parts (splits in Gnucash parlance)
of these transactions that affect their asset account for the loan to you.
Using the values for 1 Aug, the transactions in the bank's acconts look
like:
  Debit |
Credit

--
Asset:Loan 68.40|
Income:Fees & Interest |68.40
Asset:Loan 2392.66 |
Income:Fees |2392.66
Asset:Loan |
3936.94
Asset:Cash 3936.94 |

In your hands, the same loan is recorded as a Liability and the Fees and
Interest charges increase your liability. An increase in a Liability account
is recorded in a split with a credit to that account and a corresponding
debit to your Expense account for Fees and Interest.

Your loan payment decreases your Liability to the bank, i.e. it is a debit
to that liability account, but decreases your cash in your bank account
asset, i.e. it is a credit to that account in your accounts. Using the same
transactions for 1 Aug you should see in your accounts after importing into
the Loan:Liability account ( note you will have to select the
Expense:Fees and Asset:Bank:Cash accounts as the transfer accounts
for each component while importing.

Debit |
Credit

-
Liability:Loan |
68.40
Expense:Fees68.40 |
Liability:Loan | 2392.66
Expense:Fees2392.66 |
Liability:Loan 3936.94 |
Asset:Bank:Cash | 3936.94

If the QIF does not import as above, I would compare the QIF files for an
import of your bank savings/cheque account with the QIF file for the loan
above and check the signs associated with deposits and withdrawals from your
savings/cheque account. For the bank your savings/cheque account is a
Liability. I would expect that your deposits should appear as positive
amounts and your withdrawals should be negative amounts in the QIF file (see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicken_Interchange_Format) for
yoursaving/cheque accoount statement/QIF file if the bank is following this
format.

Correspondingly for the loan account QIF file, the fees and interest should
be positive(or unsigned) and payments should be negative in the QIF as they
appear in your statement.

Hope this helps sort this problem for you rather than confusing the issue
further.

Hi
First, when you click on gnucash-2.6.18, you should drag the gnucash app to
your /Applications folder.

Then double click on the /Applicstions/Gnucash app.
The error you see is because it was trying to load the file from your
desktop, but you moved or removed it so it can't find it.

You will either need to replace it, or File Open the new location.

Can you try adding {SYS_LIB}/guile/2.0/ccache; to line 62 of environment so it
looks like
GUILE_LOAD_COMPILED_PATH={SYS_LIB}/gnucash/scm/ccache/2.0;{SYS_LIB}/guile/2.0/ccache;{GUILE_COMPILED_LIBS};{GUILE_LOAD_COMPILED_PATH}

Re: Quantity total below create / view / edit invoice

2017-10-20 Thread Adrien Monteleone
For individual invoices you should already be able to see columns for quantity
and price per line item.

As for a report that consolidates this data across various invoices - no,
you’ll need to modify or write a new report, or save the invoices in html,
parse the line items to csv, and then use a spreadsheet or other means to
manage the actual report.

Re: Vendor Bill - Invoice Entries

2017-10-20 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Odoo is another option. It’s open source, and free, but they do try to talk you
into buying their hosted version. (there is a Turnkey-Linux version which you
can spin up quickly to play with using VirtualBox or VMWare) It’s probably more
beast than you need though. On that note, check out the Turnkey-Linux apps and
you might find something more to your needs.

I do freelance work and wanted to track my separate service revenue so I just
created revenue sub-accounts for that. When I create invoices, I put a
description and choose the appropriate revenue sub-category. Everything rolls
into ‘revenue’ if I want to see it consolidated, otherwise, I can see it
separately.

If I start using a similar description as a previous invoice (because some
services repeat each month) I get an auto-fill benefit which includes
quantities, prices, discounts, taxes, and posting account.

Re: Ordering Transactions on same date

2017-10-20 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I too would be interested in the mystery solution.

Personally I use the 24hour time without a separator—e.g. 5:32pm becomes 1732.

To distinguish times from other numbers I use “T” at the end, thus: 1732T

However, this breaks if there are actual numbers to enter like from a check. I
have so few of those, it isn’t an issue, mileage may vary for others.

Unfortunately, you can’t combine times with other numbers because any
non-numeric character causes GC to stop sorting. So you can’t put hyphens or
spaces to separate times from other types of transaction numbers.

It would be nice if an extra field for either ORDER or TIME were implemented
just for this situation. It is especially annoying due to some GC features
defaulting to placing their entries at the beginning of a day rather than the
same order as a manually entered transaction. This will produce some negative
or reverse balance conditions on occasion that never existed in real life.

Adrien

Re: Invoices

2017-10-20 Thread Adrien Monteleone
The work performed should be handled on a vendor invoice between whatever
expense account you have set up for the purpose and a liability account set up
to ‘hold’ payments that are to be charged against their A/R (tuition and fees?)
balance. This is because you owe them for work performed. It is a liability.

Then you periodically or at any convenient time (perhaps when they perform the
work and you make the ‘vendor’ invoice) you ‘pay’ their A/R invoices using the
special liability account.

I don’t think Equity accounts are the best place for this in my opinion.

As for persistent business icons, I too think they should always be visible if
enabled. (and not just on the business specific tabs)

Best I can tell, you could keep open tabs for Customer/Vendor/Employee
Overviews as needed and have access to them that way.

You can assign some keyboard shortcuts yourself. I don’t have the doc link
handy but you should be able to find something on the Wiki or in the mailing
list archives on the subject.

Adrien

Lorrie,
With regard to the files on the desktop, David Carlson's advice is sound.
As for keeping the app on your computer, I suspect that you were opening
gnucash from the downloaded disk image; you must drag gnucash.app from that
image into the Applications folder to complete the installation.

Re: GnuCash 2.7.0 released

2017-10-20 Thread Ian K via gnucash-user
On the other test installation I also made the environment file change.

- I tried this installation without any existing data file.
- This time GnuCash loaded slowly but without the splash screen
disappearing. Various messages appeared at the bottom of the splash screen
with progress bar activity.
- I went through the new file setup process and successfully saved a new
file.
- I exited GnuCash normally.
- I then restarted GnuCash and it then terminated itself after some seconds
of displaying the splash screen.
The splash screen just shows Loading... at the bottom and no activity on the
progress bar.

Re: GnuCash 2.7.0 released

2017-10-20 Thread Ian K via gnucash-user
OK, I did the change to the environment file described above.

- When I then ran GnuCash the first time the splash screen and Tootip of the
day screens appeared. After several seconds the splash screen disappeared,
then after a delay of some minutes (long enough to think it had hung), the
main program window appeared.
- I then tried to load a data file (a copy of my main 2.6 data file), and I
got an error, Sorry Gnucash.exe has stopped working and needs to close (or
similar).
- On subsequent attempts to start GnuCash the splash screen appears for a
few seconds then the program terminates abruptly without showing any error.
