[Goanet] Care of Kidneys

2014-04-26 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Subject: Care of Kidney

The BEST WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR KIDNEYS

.

By Dr. Willie T. Ong (Internist and Cardiologist) -
(May be a repeat for some of you)

Most people know how to protect the heart, but do you know how to care for your
kidneys? The kidney's job is to help remove various toxins (drugs and food
wastes), and expel them through the urine.

As we grow older, our kidneys will also start to age. A problem with kidney
disease is that majority of patients have no warning symptoms.

Some time ago, we interviewed Dr. Elizabeth Montemayor, a nephrologist at the
Philippine General Hospital.

Here are 10 ways to protect your kidneys:

1. Limit your salt intake

Too much salt is not only bad for your blood pressure, it's also bad for your
kidneys. Many die of kidney disease, which can be partly attributed to a high
salt intake and fondness for fish sauce, soy sauce, plain salt and salted fish.
Even instant noodles, chips and nuts are teeming with salt. The problem with
salt is that it encourages the body to retain water, and can increase your
blood pressure (which damages the kidneys).

2. Don't load up on high protein foods such as meat and steaks

A high protein diet makes the kidneys work twice as hard. Pretty soon, your
kidneys could get tired and some of the weaker kidney cells can die. A friendly
reminder to people on a high-protein Atkin's Diet or South Beach Diet. The
time-tested doctor's advice of moderation in everything will serve you well.
Eat a balanced diet of rice, vegetables, fish and fruits and you can't go wrong.

3. Keep your blood pressure at 130/80 or lower!

If your blood pressure is above 140 over 90, this can cause kidney damage
within five years. The kidneys are said to be happiest with a blood pressure
of 130/80 or lower. To help control your blood pressure, you should limit your
salt intake, reduce weight and take medicines for high blood pressure, if
needed.

4. Keep your blood sugar below 120 mg/dl

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney failure.
A person with uncontrolled diabetes for 5-10 years may develop significant
kidney damage. Consult your doctor and keep your blood sugar under control with
diet, exercise and maintenance medicines.

5. Drink 8 glasses of water a day

Doctors usually advise people to take in 8 glasses of water a day, but this
really depends on your age and condition. If you're sweating a lot and work
outdoors, you may need to drink more than 8 glasses a day. However, if you are
above 65 years of age, you may do well with just 6 glasses a day. Drinking
enough water also prevents the formation of kidney stones.

6. Watch your intake of pain relievers and other drugs

Taking pain relievers like mefenamic acid and ibuprofen for a prolonged period
of time may cause kidney damage. Because of this, we should limit taking these
medicines to only a week, or just take them as needed. For those with chronic
arthritis, try to look for other ways to relieve the pain such as using a hot
water bag, pain reliever ointments, or the safer paracetamol tablet.

7. Be careful with tests and procedures using contrast

Some tests, like CT Scans and MRIs, and angiograms, use a contrast dye which
helps doctors delineate the organs better. The problem with such dyes is that
they can cause kidney damage. To be safe, I would strongly advise you to
consult a kidney specialist before undergoing such procedures.

8. Don't drink too much Vitamin C

Excess vitamin C (ascorbic acid) ! can lead to the formation of kidney stones
in predisposed individuals. If you need to take vitamin C, a dose of 500 mg or
less is safer.

9. Don't rely on food supplements to protect your kidneys

The above tips are so far the best tips to care for the kidneys.

10. Get a kidney check-up

Simple tests, such as a complete blood count, BUN and creatinin, and a urine
analysis are the first screening tests for the kidneys. Finding a trace of
protein in the urine can alert the doctor of possible kidney disease.

Bottomline is: Kidney diseases are expensive and difficult to treat. Let's take
the necessary steps to protect our kidneys today.

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is like
expecting the lion not to attack you because you are a vegetarian. Think about
it.

[Goanet] GOA MINING SCAM SHOULD BE HANDED OVER TO CBI FOR PROBING CM PARRIKAR AND AG NADKARNI’S ROLE

2014-04-26 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Goa illegal mining scam should be handed over to the Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI) to enable a free and fair investigation into the role
of current Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and that of Advocate General
Atmaram Nadkarni.

The illegal mining in Goa which accelerated from the year 2000 has been an
all party venture and a sheer loot of the State’s rich mineral resources
with the Congress, BJP, NCP and the MGP all having been beneficiaries of
the pie. Besides Pratapsingh Rane and Digambar Kamat, Manohar Parrikar
himself has a lot to answer as he had also been the Chief Minister of the
State earlier from 24th October 2000 to 2nd February 2005.

The investigation into the alleged over Rs 30,000 crore illegal mining scam
should also examine the legal opinions given by former Advocate General
Subodh Kantak and current Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni who was also
Goa’s Advocate General from 2000 to 2005.

It needs to be investigated whether the Advocate Generals had given their
legal opinions to the benefit of the mining barons and to the detriment of
the State exchequer and Goa’s best interests.

There needs to be a probe into the assets acquired by Subodh Kantak and
more particularly that of Atmaram Nadkarni. It is highly objectionable that
Atmaram Nadkarni despite being the Advocate General of Goa blatantly
continues to be the legal Messiah for the mining companies including Sesa
Goa-Vedanta which is one of those indicted in the illegal mining scam as
per the Shah Commission report.

It needs to be also probed whether Subodh Kantak and Atmaram Nadkarni
misused their high Constitutional position as a cloak to allow the
illegalities by the mining companies. The former and current Advocate
General of Goa ought to be quizzed by the CBI to examine and establish the
sources of the huge assets acquired by them.

In a clear conflict of interest the current Director of Mines and Geology
Prasanna Acharya continues to be the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to
Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni. Is not Atmaram Nadkarni discreetly
misusing and manipulating Prasanna Acharya to the benefit of the mining
lobby in covering their illegalities.

[Goanet] Penguin’s pioneering publisher - who never read books

2014-04-26 Thread Luis Vas
Penguin’s pioneering publisher - who never read books
.
By Florence Waters
Allen Lane, the founder of the Penguin paperback, is one of our
country’s greatest populist educators.
He was both brilliant and normal, a charismatic bore, a man who “never
turned the page of a book” (his own words), yet was passionate about
getting people to read. He changed publishing 75 years ago when he
started selling good books for the price of a packet of cigarettes.

If anyone can flesh out the contradictory figure of Lane, it’s the
writer Michael Morpurgo, who attempts just that in a fascinating Radio
4 programme. Morpurgo met Lane’s eldest daughter, Clare, in Corfu in
1963 and, at the age of 19, married her. He knew his father-in-law for
seven difficult years (“Tensions finally melted in the last year”)
before Lane died of cancer. “He wasn’t happy about the marriage, so it
was a challenge. If only I had known then how interesting a challenge
it was to be,” Morpurgo tells me.

With him when we speak is Clare, who recounts happy childhood tales: a
party in their Middlesex garden organised by her father at which a
baby elephant appeared; and a cycling trip across France with just her
father and DK Broster’s novel The Flight of the Heron: “My father
didn’t read but, somehow, he could produce from his pocket exactly the
right book at the right time.”

Lane published DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, which sold 2.1
million copies in its first year. “He was a terrier snapping at the
establishment,” Morpurgo says. Yet years later, the same man stole out
in the dark to empty a Penguin warehouse full of books of French
illustrations and burn them, because he’d decided they were
sacrilegious. .

Pelican Books

Lane expanded the business in 1937 with the publication of George
Bernard Shaw's The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and
Capitalism under the Pelican Books imprint, an imprint designed to
educate the reading public rather than entertain. Recognising his own
limitations Lane appointed V. K. Krishna Menon as the first
commissioning edition of the series, supported by an advisory panel
consisting of Peter Chalmers Mitchell, H. L. Bales and W. E. Williams.
Several thousand Pelicans were published over the next half-century
and brought high quality accounts of the current state of knowledge in
many fields, often written by authors of specialised academic
books.(The Pelican series, in decline for several years, was finally
discontinued in 1984.)

It all began with the Lane brothers, Richard, Allen and
John, zestful and filled with what they thought was a great
idea. They launched a publishing firm, Penguin Books, to
publish soft-cover reprints of contemporary classics at a
very low price. There were three types of these: novels, in
orange and white jackets; detective stories, in green and white;
and popular biographies, in blue and white.

Most of the established English publishing houses took an
extremely dim view of this venture. It was true, they said,
that soft-cover books had previously been published in Eng-
land, when people wanted a slender volume they could slip
into their pockets on a trip via that modern means of trans-
portation, the railway. They recalled The Run and Read
Library, The Railway Library and The Travellers' Li-
brary. But that had been long ago. In the twentieth century
people wanted hard-cover books which they could show on
their drawing-room shelves and also, occasionally, read. They
would not buy flimsy paperbacks.

The Lane brothers did not have much to lose and so they
decided to try just the same. They published reprints, such as
Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Andre Maurois'
Ariel, ou la vie de Shelley (in English translation) ; and Eric
Linklater's Poet's Pub. The print orders were very small at
first, but then they began to rise.

Bookish Krishna Menon's dark eyes were wide open for
new developments in the publishing world, and he took due
notice of the Penguins' progress. Also he had an idea, which
he hastened to bring to the attention of the enterprising Lanes.

The idea was even more enterprising: to move heavily into
the nonfiction field, and to publish not only reprints but also
original works by big names.

This was all very well, but the publishers needed some as-
surance that important schools and other organizations would
take note of this venture. Krishna Menon had by then lined
up an impressive number of contacts, not only in the political
but also in the educational world, contacts which the three
enterprising Englishmen lacked as yet. So he introduced the
Lanes to influential fellow Britishers whom he knew, and who
could be of some help. Among these were the secretary of the
British Institute of Adult Education, W. E. Williams, and
H. L. Beales, an influential faculty member of Krishna
Menon's own alma mater, the London School of Economics.
They agreed that the books envisioned by Krishna Menon
would be useful in adult education not the least reason for
this being

Pinto was the chief guest on opening night. Amongthe spectators were priests,
nuns and a cross section of Catholic Karachi. Althoughthe play was presented by
St. Anthony’s Parish it featured actors from otherparishes as well. The idea of
presenting this play, a musical, was floated byNicholas Ali and Myron Mendes in
November last year to Mr. Aloysius Soares ofSt. Anthony’s Choir and Rev. Fr.
Mario Rodrigues, Parish Priest, who saw thisas a great opportunity to involve
the youth of the community to depict theGospel narration of Christ’s final days
on earth in color and song on the eveof holy week.
Then, followed months of auditioning, preparations, prop and costume
acquirement, experimentingwith sound and light and rehearsals late into the
nights.
ThePlay
Thecopy-left play was written by Russell Adams, Larry Holder, Steve Israel
andothers about a couple of decades ago and has been performed by church groups
inmany countries around the world to commemorate the death and resurrection
ofour Savior.
Theplay, basically, a play of a play opens with the leader of a group
informingits members that they are to perform a passion play and asking them to
picktheir favorite Bible characters whom they wish to portray.
Inhis introduction, Mr. Soares explains the background and aims of the play
beingpresented.
Thefirst scene is the Triumphant Entry of Christ into Jerusalem amid a
welcomingcrowd waving palm fronds while the song ‘Shout Hosanna’ fills the
auditorium.
Thenext scene is of the Last Supper followed by In the Garden, Peter’s
Denial,Death of Judas, Road to Golgotha, Foot of the Cross, The Resurrection,
TheAscension and then ends with a Prayer.
Thebeautifully sung songs accompanying the scenes were ‘Sacred Supper’, ‘I Lay
itDown’, Secret Lies, ‘Ballad of the Cross’, Lover of my Soul, ‘I am
theResurrection’ and finally ‘Praise Adonai.’
Theplay was produced by Rev. Frs. Mario Rodrigues and Noman Arif and directed
byNicholas Ali and Myron Mendes. The music directors were Aloysius Soares
andConstantino (Tino) Pinto.
Theplay was superbly enacted with the actors playing the parts very well.
Thosewith singing roles conducted themselves with aplomb and the costumes and
propslent an authenticity to the ambience of the theme.

2014-04-26 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão
The Judiciary is not an investigating agency, nor policing entity.
It only adjudicates matters placed before it.
Was there anywhere the identity of the looters and a plea to prosecute them?
Has the SC allowed them(looters) to resume mining?

[Goanet] GTDC selling Goa to Non-Goans: GSRP

2014-04-26 Thread floriano lobo

GTDC selling Goa to Non-Goans: GSRP

Condemning the action of leasing out 53,000 sqmts of Vagator by the Goa Tourism
Department Corporation (GTDC), Goa Su-Raj Party (GSRP) to lead a people's
agitation to protest against the decision of the BJP-led Goa government. GTDC
is selling Goan land to Non-Goans under the guise of promoting tourism. If at
all GTDC intended to create tourism infrastructure at Vagator, it could have
worked along with Goan hospitality and tourism companies to conceptualize and
develop different tourism infrastructure at this beach destination, expressed
Floriano Lobo, general secretary, GSRP.

The Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC) has leased out a stretch of
53,000 sq m on the shores of Vagator to two Delhi-based hospitality companies
to run a 'model tourism-entertainment zone' for a period of 22 years. The GTDC
land, which is adjacent to the beach but falls within the coastal regulation
zone (CRZ) was leased through an open tender in 2012.

The Goa government in particular the GTDC appears to be in favor of Non-Goan
companies bagging contracts in tourism-related infrastructure. Even in the
Amphibious/Helipad Services - a Goan businessman through his international
company filed an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the job and even fit the
profile, yet without any intimation, even though he had an EoI, GTDC awarded
the job to yet another Non-Goan company. Look at the Lusofonia 2014 games as
well, instead of a Goan company handling the Opening and Closing event, Goa
government decided to give the Rs 20 crore contract to Percept, whose Sunburn
event has been constantly under cloud, elaborated Savio Rodrigues, Secretary
President (Youth Affairs), GSRP.

Tourism is the backbone of Goa's economy. However instead of the local
companies benefiting the government is more confident of Non-Goan companies
doing a better job than local companies. The BJP-government and GTDC have
surely received massive kick-backs from these companies to lease-out the
beach-land to Non-Goans as local Goans companies cannot afford to pay such huge
kick-backs. An inquiry must be conducted to find-out whether the already
tainted Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar received any kick-back to pass this
project, stated Rodrigues.

[Goanet] why does your kidney not function ?

2014-04-26 Thread Ana Maria Fernandes
Kidneys get affected when you use refine salt. God has given us salt coming out
from sea but we somehow do not belief in God's creations and believe doctors
and other people who say sea salt is not good but refined salt. This salt gets
deposited on the kidneys and certain chemicals used in refining salt causes
kidneys to fail
