[lace] Question about beads
I'm interested in hearing from anyone that has had the experience of beads cutting the thread in their lace. Please tell: What size type of beads were being used? And what size type of thread was being used? Re: [lace] Question about beads
I would agree with Kathleen here. Bugle beads or beads with chips should be avoided at almost all costs when you are making anything involving beads. The only way to get around the challenge with bugle beads is to put a seed bead at either end of the bugle bead. Then the thread isn't rubbing on the edge of the bugle bead!! It doesn't seem to happen with other beads, which seem to be finished better. Of course you can get an occasional bead with a chip, but that is very rare. I used several times beads in my laces. In no case happened anything like cutting the thread or the finished lace. As well as bugles, I was advised by a bead teacher that some of the round metal beads (not glass beads) can wear through thread. So I avoided trying them. BE CAREFUL when using Swarovski crystals, too...I always use seed beads on each opening any time I am working with thread. This might even be true of crystals from other countries, also. As I never use these, I cannot say. Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
If this is a new event/idea someone's come up with, why not have it the same day as the already long established UK National Lacemaking Day, 2nd Saturday in September (this year the 12th) and make it International Lacemaking Day instead? [lace] Lace Domonstrations.
A universal Lace Day sounds like a Great idea. I spent last Sunday at the National Gallery of Victoria, demonstrating lacemaking with 7 others. They all did a different bobbin lace, on different shaped pillows, and I was the sole Needlelacemaker. I had some filet lace, knotted lace, and tatting with me as well as Normal needlelace! We shared a long table between 2 of us, and and we each had a small display board propped up on an easel for displaying some of out lace - in the style we were working on that day. I was surprised at the number of people who came to see our effort. It was supposed to last just an hour, but went for over 2 hours!! Yes, Jeri, - I was wearing some needlelace - a high neck collar or neckband, and a jabot piece that was in the same ecru thread, - so I made them match and look like one unit! Point de Gaze style! The late Gabrielle Pond got me well trained in wearing lace - to Lace Days, anyway!! (Lace is supposed to be kind to old faces! I need to wear lots! :) ) I made 3 small doilies in Knotted Lace from the Elena Dickson book when I started learning that lace. Folded almost in half, and laid one just above the other, the 3 of them make a nice Jabot down the front of a blouse Regards from Liz in Melbourne lizl...@bigpond.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I remember honoring it when I lived in Pittsburgh (moved away from there 10 years ago), but don't remember for how long before I moved away. And June 21st is the Summer Solstice, is it not? [lace] Museum Kantfabriek in Horst-Int. Lace Day
I have gone to the website both Sue and Carolina sent, the Museum Kantfabriek in Horst. Has anyone visited this museum? It looks, from the website, as though the emphasis is on machine made lace. There is a video that has machines working, but also what appears to be some kind of lace day with lacemakers. I am wondering how widespread the celebration of this International Lace Day is, and how well known it is among hand lacemakers. Are all the Dutch lacemakers participating in this? Also, is it every year on June 21, or is it the fourth Sunday in June or some other formula? Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
Yes, Devon and Jacquie. Jean Leader has pointed out: The first UK National Lacemaking Day was actually on 14th September 1991 - thereâs a report with photos in âLace 65 (January 1992). When I read about this, I wondered why all national lace guilds could not agree on a date. There may be a conflict with some other holiday dates, but if we choose a specific Saturday of a month, the conflict will not be every year. We need to think globally. That way, we could all be committed to the same day. Following an agreement, we could consolidate publicity and financing, casting an all-encompassing lace net over the world. As Jacquie suggests: The 1st or 2nd Saturday of a month would perhaps work better. September is a fairly decent climate date for most who would be out and about at lace demonstration venues. Australians and South Africans: Please weigh in on this time of year for you. (your weather in September would be like the Northern Hemisphere's weather of early March). Those who celebrate people of prominence in lace history (like St. Catherine's Day) could still do so, but we have the very existence of lace to protect for the future and need to be unified in our agreement. Perhaps this could be on the agenda at OIDFA's Congress, and agreement would then come by a unified vote - in person - of representatives from all nations in attendance? Arachne could be one of the information-sharing vehicles. There is strength in numbers. An organized effort might be covered by media on all continents where there are lace makers, and public attention tends to attract the young. We need to think seriously about this. Everyone, please remember to wear a piece of lace when you are out and about promoting lace making. Repeating here my old suggestion of a small lace doily worn near the shoulder, held in place with a pretty brooch that does not penetrate lace threads. It will look like a corsage might. Be careful with safety belts in autos, choosing the shoulder not secured by the shoulder part of the restraining device. A lace-wearing commitment need not be expensive. [lace] Mechlin
Dear Arachnids My thanks to all who responded to my request for information about museums etc. for studying Milanese lace. Now I have a request for myself. After completing my floral book I started studying Mechlin using Rita Thienpondts syllabus, with its well thought out teaching progression and I am ready to attempt more. Would anyone with antique Mechlin prickings share them with me please? I am willing to share English prickings in return. Re: [lace] [LACE] battenberg tape
You could, very easily. I’ve thought of it and never done it, for two reasons. First, If I’m going to the trouble of making the tape, why would I make a length of tape and then cut it up and sew it onto the pattern to resemble tape lace, when I could so easily have just made real tape lace directly on the pattern. Second, Battenberg eats up a lot of tape, and I find making simple tape mind-numbingly boring. So I’d probably never complete the tape project, let alone using it to make Battenberg. So that’s why I’d prefer to buy machine-made.
