Re: [Mediawiki-l] A call for skins

2011-02-08 Thread Laurent Savaete
Hi Daniel,

I've built this skin (http://www.wiki-babel.org/en/Main_Page) based on
the MonoBook that came with mw 1.15. It works ok with firefox 3.6 but
is a bit off with other browsers unfortunately. The code is here:
https://www.assembla.com/spaces/wikibabel
I can't claim it's a work of art and it's probably quite site
specific, but if you like it or think it can be useful in any way,
feel free :)

cheers,
Laurent

If you have a MediaWiki skin you've built, feel free to bring out it's

floating around the Internet, and they are various degrees of out of

into svn and cleaning it up stripping away the boilerplate.

I would LOVE skin designs right now. If you've got a nice idea for a
skin feel free to mock it up and post the mockup images for it. If it
looks interesting I'll consider turning it into a real skin, ESPECIALLY
if it break our de-facto traditions on what makes up a wiki skin. Our
rigid skin structure is one of the big limitations of our skinning
system right now, skins that define things beyond the current
restrictions are good examples needed while we break open the rigid
 structure of our skins.

[Mediawiki-l] Kapuneipu - help wanted

2011-02-08 Thread K. Kamhamea
Hello,
I created a project Kapuneipu that is a close cousin to mediawiki. In fact
it enhances it providing a dynamic solution to problems when some authors
clash, which unfortunately more frequently happens. The idea behind this
project is to eliminate Dunning-Kruger Effect (
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning-Kruger-Effekt) by evolutionary
principles. See the project's wiki page for more details (

Have a look at userstyles.org[1]. I'm not sure what the licences are,
but perhaps we can contact some of the authors? I'm a big fan of
 Wikipedia Grey Lady III.

Btw would you mind explaining the difference between a skin and a CSS
 file, assuming there is one?

 Steve
[1] For those unfamiliar with it, it's a repository of site-specific
CSS files for use with the browser extension Stylish. You pick a style
that someone has defined for a given site, and everytime you visit
that site, you'll get that CSS layered over the top.
A CSS file is simply a stylesheet to style the markup, you can reference
some images from the styles as backgrounds.
An actual skin is comprised of css files, optionally js, images, and
most importantly a php file that is used to generate the markup.
I guess I should be clear, I'm not really looking for just stylesheets,
or the plethora of monobook clones with minor tweaks out there.
The reason why I asked for mockups especially rather than just asking
for skins (besides saying I'd be happy to clean them up and commit them
to svn so that we have an actual maintained repository of the skins) was
since what I'm especially looking for are mockups that have the areas
necessary for a skin to function as a wiki (something blog themes are
lacking making them hard to port as examples) but break the normal rules
(maybe they don't use the standard sidebar, have extra links, do
navigation differently, put categories somewhere else, etc...) of how a
skin looks. Besides some nice extra skins to add to the repo, I need
some examples that break the normal patterns to work with and build as I
rip out the restrictions in the current skin system. And hence I asked
for mockups since such skins are already hard enough that most people
probably would never have got to implementation.

It seems to me you are proposing a hierarchical vetting system. This is not a
new idea, but many failed attempts show that it is really, really hard in
practice to identify experts and it does not get easier by making the process
work from majority rules. In fact, the very Dunning-Kruger Effect is against
you; group members are more likely to promote those who share their opinions or
social codes, not necessarily the most competent. I believe the
problem-to-solve is the algorithm, not the implementation.

Good luck!

We suffered many attacks and fortunately had the OpenID login extension,

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID

installed and so decided to disable native wiki account creation with this
in LocalSettings.php:

# Prevent new user registrations except by sysops
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['createaccount'] = false;

Then updated MediaWiki:Loginprompt to

suggest that new users create accounts with an OpenID.

This seems to repel the attacks.

Many users will already have OpenID authentication via their email accounts
or other popular web sites.

 them seem block the
worse offenders. I tried ReCaptcha but now the bots or
 the person determined
to get around that get through and post their spam
 anyway. If I could I'd
have several of these at once just for account
 creation.

I'm trying the question based one now and hopefully
 that won't be too hard
for the people I want to actually edit the wiki.

Speaking of questy captcha.. is it possible to have
 one question and
  several answers?

  $wgCaptchaQuestions[1] = array( 'question' =
 Question?, 'answer' =
  answer1, 'answer' = answer2, 'answer' =
 answer3 );

Try installing the ConfirmEdit extension. That
 should help.

We suffered many attacks and fortunately had the OpenID
 login extension,

 http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID

installed and so decided to disable native wiki account
 creation with this
 in LocalSettings.php:

 # Prevent new user registrations except by sysops
 $wgGroupPermissions['*']['createaccount'] = false;

 Then updated  MediaWiki:Loginprompt to

suggest that new users create accounts with an OpenID.

This seems to repel the attacks.

Many users will already have OpenID authentication via
 their email accounts
 or other popular web sites.

I'm trying to find where the javascript for
 the buttons comes from.

 includes/EditPage.php function getEditToolbar()

Is there an upgrade save way to override this function?

EditPageBeforeEditToolbar hook (I find easier to modify it at
$toolarray, though).

I just implemented it for you. Syntax is:
$wgCaptchaQuestions[] = array( 'question' = Question?, 'answer' =
array( answer1, answer2, answer3 ) );

You will need to download the trunk version of ConfirmEdit, revision
81795 or later.

Thanks! The hook looks indeed a bit too much for such a small modification.
