What is an activeX virus and i just joined on the 1st so do i need to worry? iread my mail w/ netscrape using the delete and next buttons- bad idea? An "activex virus" is a virus written into an ActiveX applet/program/whatever you call this. ActiveX stuff has low level access to your computer when you run a Micro$oft environment, so it can nicely do a lot of damage. Not all ActiveX controls are considered virusses. At least, that is what I heard ;-) Paul )0(---)0( Happiness requires practice, just like playing the violin. )0([[EMAIL PROTECTED]]-)0( http://nlpagan.net - ICQ 147208 Registered Linux User 174403

Isn't the only way to get a virus is to get an attached executable file or macro and you activating it? Seve Not really, when you are in Windoze and you use LookOut. PrettyBoy is a virus that kicks in through a failure in some DLL when you only receive it. Mike Tracy Holt wrote: No, not anymore. If you have an html enabled browser (but I believe only on Windows machines, and that only because of permissions) you can actually 'activate' the virus simply by previewing your mail. I'm not an expert, but I think the only reason there aren't more viruses for Unix / Linux is that there aren't enough people that no how and actually have the motivation to write those viruses. Most anybody can write one for Windows with just a basic knowledge of 'Visual Basic'. Actually, the reason for the lack of Linux virus' is because it's difficult to infect the system binaries and libraries necessary for a good virus outbreak.
