You arent allowed to use it, and in (C) stuff that means you simply arent allowed to use it, as by default everything not granted is just not there... I thought copyright only protected the right to distribute copies (modified or not). What you do at home (modify, copy, use) is your own business, as long as you don't distribute the result. AFAIK the you may use the software is only there for completeness, not because you wouldn't have the right otherwise. But IANAL and I could very well be wrong... If nobody else is sure about this, we could ask -legal. Regardless of that it's probably a good idea to ask upstream to change the wording. As Joerg says, they obviously mean the software to be free. If you still need a sponsor, then I am happy to do so. A couple of points from reading the packaging: you should mention yourself in debian/copyright and the licence under which your packaging is released and you should include the year on both copyright statements. you should remove commented debhelper lines which you aren't using. There are some warnings in the build which you should look at at some point: dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: debian/briquolo/usr/games/briquolo shouldn't be linked with libfreetype.so.6 (it uses none of its symbols). dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: debian/briquolo/usr/games/briquolo shouldn't be linked with libz.so.1 (it uses none of its symbols) Other than that it looks in pretty good shape, and I'd be happy to sponsor it. In terms of adding it to SVN, you should keep the packaging in some sort of revision control system, the debian games team SVN is as good as any, particularly if you would like to include it as a team maintained package. Bug#449475: Serious doubts about the distributability of a file
[please CC me and the bug for replies, thanks] Hello, The package vegastrike (in main) contains two files whose copyright header is reproduced integrally in this message. It seems to me that the copyright notices conflict, and effectively render the file not distributable, but I am not quite sure; if this file is effectively a derived work from the work copyrighted by the Universtity of North Carolina, it is not distributable. It all depends on the meaning of based on. What do you think ? What should be done ? Bug#449475: Serious doubts about the distributability of a file
On Jan 7, 2008 1:38 PM, Vincent Fourmond [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It seems to me that the copyright notices conflict, and effectively render the file not distributable, but I am not quite sure; if this file is effectively a derived work from the work copyrighted by the Universtity of North Carolina, it is not distributable. It all depends on the meaning of based on. What do you think ? What should be done ? I agree that the notices are incompatible, but I think the problem is more fundamental. The big problem is in the licence terms for the UNC code: Permission to use, copy, modify and distribute this software and its documentation for educational, research and non-profit purposes, without fee, and without a written agreement is hereby granted, This limitation to educational, research and non-profit purposes makes the UNC code non-free. So if any UNC code is included in the file in question, then this makes the file undistributable in main. Probably OK in non-free given that Debian is a non-profit organisation.
