Most IM services and protocols have mobile phone apps. You would need

On 03/08/2021 05:10, M Mn wrote:

Is there truly any way to text free over the internet? With one simple app
without having to download a bunch of extra stuff that needs configuring too?

I assume by free, you mean except for what you are already paying to
access the internet, and the references to extra stuff and configuration
refer to stuff not included by your OS supplier and configuration you
wouldn't have to do to use the internet in the first place, which are
somewhat variable items. What services you get as part of the standard
bundle, with the OS, depends on what the OS developer things the market
wants, as moderated, by any commercial interests they may have in
operating infrastructure.

The biggest obstacle to point to point operation is actually that most
people don't have a first class connection to the internet, but rather
go through network address translation with an unstable public address.

In the early days of the internet, email would have provided this, and
some early mass market ISPs (e.g. Demon in the UK) worked in a way where
their customers had a first class connection to the internet, including
for email. However, with the mass market, came a move to storing
mailboxes centrally and consumer mail programs only having second class
access, using a single relay for all outbound traffic, and sucking
incoming traffic from centralised mailboxes, rather than sending
outgoing mail directly to the recipient's system, and accepting pushes
of incoming mail direct from the sender. The advent of spam supported
this trend, as people started not to trust point to point routed email.

SIP, as used for VoIP, and also capable of text messaging, is similar.
The protocol is quite capable of working point to point, but nearly
everyone uses it via an internet telephony service provider, and uses
phone numbers for addressing, not full user@domain addresses. SIP
implementations do tend to have some support for address translation,
but can have trouble if the public address isn't stable.

You are missing rather important information, which makes me think you
don't really understand what Pidgin is. Most users of Pidgin do not use
services for which a phone number has any meaning at all. You need to
tell us the service you are using.

Chances are that your problem is with that service and not with Pidgin,
but if you need to pursue Pidgin, you will need to provide us with error
messages, and the debugging logs it produces.

The only phone number based service I'm aware of is a South African one,
but I haven't seen that mentioned in a long time.

I've taken the developer list out of the recipients, as cross posting is

Please reply on list. This is a peer support forum and works best when
multiple people can see and check the answers. Also people don't want
to keep answering the same question, so it works best when people with
the same problem can find the answers by searching.

Pidgin supports a number of service types, and in some cases,
particularly XMPP, a number of organisations provide those services, so,
in those cases, it also provides the ability to configure the network
address for the provider.

If Pidgin was provided for work or education use, the service provider
is likely to be your employer or college. More generally, if Pidgin was
provided pre-configured, you should consult whoever configured the
machine. You couldn't configure it yourself without knowing the service
provider.

Many of the mass market services have now been closed down, but in the
past service providers for those included Microsoft, Yahoo and Google.
I've lost track of which companies still provide public services with
open protocols.

I was hoping someone more familiar with this aspect of Pidgin was going
to answer, but really you need help from someone you trust, as this
relates to the mechanisms that are used to ensure you are really talking
to the server, not to an impostor who is then forwarding things to the
server.

It appears that only IRC and XMPP use this. I'm guessing that you are
trying to access an IRC server run by voxi.ru, but if it is actually an
XMPP one, please let us know.

The could mean:

1) someone is pretending to be the server and hoping you won't check
properly or will override security warnings;

2) Pidgin never had the CA certificate needed to verify the server - was
it working before;

3) The server has updated its server certificate which is now signed by
a new CA certificate (you may want to check you have the latest Pidgin
and have current security updates for your OS - this might be the case
if they were using a Lets Encrypt certificate, as there was a recent,
relatively chaotic, retirement of one of their CA certificates;

4) The server has a certificate that is signed by an intermediate
certificate, which they haven't sent to you, and which you didn't
already have.

There will be differences in how to add a missing CA certificate on your
side, depending on the OS, so you should tell us what that is, and as
you shouldn't take information from lightly used mailing lists at face
value, you really need someone you can trust to make sure that you don't
compromise your machine by adding a certificate that you shouldn't trust
to the extent necessary for your personal security needs.

For background on the concepts referred to above,

may be useful.

Insufficiently specified.

What IM services are are available to you?

Which of those do you trust not to abuse a man in the middle position?

Do you plan to operate your own server?

Do you need end to end encryption?

Do you need multipoint end to end encryption?

How much work are you prepared to put into sending a message?

What is the nature of the threat?

Are you concerned about traffic flow security?

I believe XMPP provides encryption to and from the server, but not
within the server. That is probably true for the supported services
provided by commercial organisations, like Google.

I don't think any of the official plugins implements end to end
encryption, but some third party ones might.

You can always encrypt off line, convert to uuencode or base64, and
paste that into a message, or series of messages, for any text based
service, but, on its own, will not give traffic flow security.

work with many types of server, including some public services, so there

Also certificates have to be signed by a trusted third party (e.g.

the procedure will also depend on which is being used. (If you are
FurnaceFilterKing, the trusted third party for your public web site is
DigiCert Inc. However, your internal server might be using the old
branding and might have a different certifier.)

The problem I'd have with pidgin as anything but pure email format would
be that it is very low volume. I don't like web sites being able to
intrude, with notifications.

Typically, what I find with support forums, is that the people making
one time appearances, to ask a question, prefer forums, because they are
fashionable, but those who stick around and answer tend to prefer
mailing lists. However both mailing list and forum camps can have a
serious amount of religious fervour.

The risk with forums in high volume cases, is that they fragment,
because lots of people want to own their own forum. Historically, at
least, the reason for actually providing forum infrastructure was
targetting, although the Discourse ones I'm on are only used to
advertise the company owning the official version of the OS software.

Even if mailing lists fragment, you can use mail filters to put them
back together, albeit you still run the risk of the same question
getting asked on all of them, and the complete answer being spread
across them.
