[Bug 495106] [NEW] Paper tray selection does not work
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cups In the office we have a Canon iR 2570Ci printer. I got the according PPD from the canon website and also tried the one from openprinting.org. There are some PPDs supplied by Ubuntu but they don't have selection for additional trays. Anyway, the printer in the offices has 4 trays in total. What I tried to do is to setup an openoffice document in such a way that the first page will be taken from tray 1, the second page from tray 2 and the third page from tray 3. However it only printed to tray 1. I'm currently using Kubuntu Karmic with the KDE 4.3.4 PPA. In addition I have the updates, backports and proposed repos activated. Localhost:631 returns CUPS 1.4.1. Anyway, the problems lies with CUPS I think because I printed that document to a postscript file. Upon opening that file (attached) I see on line 980 that tray 1 should be used, on line 1448 tray 2 and on line 1897 tray 3. In my opinion (not an expert at all) it seems the OpenOffice did correctly set the trays to be used. As Ubuntu uses CUPS and OOo delivers to CUPS the problem must be between CUPS and the printer. ** Affects: cups (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Paper tray selection does not work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495106 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 484020] Re: [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning
Can we have a discussion on how things got to this point in the first place? Why did Karmic ship with such a fatally flawed Intel driver? Who made the decision that this code was suitable for a stable release? I don't think such a discussion would be very fruitful [*]. What could indeed be a fruitful discussion would be one about how to avoid shipping an LTS in April with the same stability problems. Such a discussion should take place on the ubuntu-x mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-x) and not on a bug report. I'm not an expert on xorg, but it seems that the batchbuffer dumps we have sent upstream so far has not triggered any response. From https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24825 it seems that what will be needed is that somebody affected by these problems get their hands dirty and do some git-bisecting in order to find where the problems were introduced. Brian Rogers has already started on that bug report, but has only come as far as finding that the problem does not occur with kernel 2.6.30, but is there in 2.6.31-rc1 - irrespective of intel driver version. A first step would be to make sure that this is also the case here, and then try to identify the commit that triggers the freeze. My impression is that this would give the upstream developers something to work on. [*] Here is my impression in case you find it enlightening: First, I don't agree that the intel driver has become flawed recently. It has improved a lot over the recent iterations (we had some freeze bugs like this on i9xx that are now gone). The problem seems to be one introduced in the kernel (maybe a change there triggered a long-existing bug in the driver). Second, there seems to have been very few people testing Ubuntu development releases on i8xx chipsets. There was a call for testing on the ubuntu-x mailing list back in April, with some - but not overwhelming - response. Bug reports for freezes on 845G and 855GM only started ticking in late October, see [1] and [2] for lists. At this time, we were already in final freeze, and since these bugs are hard to fix, it was at the time unrealistic to get it fixed before the release. I think that it was only well after the release that it became clear that a lot of people had this problem. [Bug 265010] Re: pulseaudio 0.9.11 ppa Luke real-time/high-priority scheduling not working
AFAIK rtkit is planned for 10.04 (Lucid). In 9.10 (Karmic) your pulseaudio daemon can gain high-priority and realtime scheduling by editing /etc/security/limits.conf. For each desktop user add the following 2 lines: $USER - nice -11 # values from -20 upto 19 allowed $USER - rtprio 9 # values from 1 upto 99 allowed Each user who wants high-priority and/or realtime scheduling then may copy /etc/pulse/daemon.conf into his ~/.pulse and change the following lines (with leading ; removed!): high-priority = yes # default no rlimit-nice = 31 # default 31, values higher than 31 are interpreted as 31! nice-level = -11 # default -11, lowest value allowed: (20 - rlimit-nice), lower means more CPU-% realtime-scheduling = yes # default no rlimit-rtprio = 9 # default 9, values from -20 upto 19 allowed realtime-priority = 9 # default 5, highest value allowed: rlimit-rtprio, higher means more priority These instructions are valid for pulseaudio running in user mode (which is the default). -- pulseaudio 0.9.11 ppa Luke real-time/high-priority scheduling not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/265010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 475936] Re: /dev/mapper/tmp encrypted with /dev/urandom not mounted on bootup
Hi out there! I had the same problem. On jaunty no problems but on karmic (complete updated on 4th Dec). The new canonical-special init-system isn't perfect. This routes to the unmountable (non-luks-) cryptsetup-devices: The new init-system don't use the old /etc/inittab. That file is replaced by the *.conf-files in /etc/init/. The *.conf-files uses a syntax for starting themselfs by events (see man startup, starting, started, stopping and stopped). A normal init starts at /etc/init/mountall.conf (and maybe some others). If started the script starts /etc/init/udev.conf. These scripts start other scripts. And so on. The cryptsetup-devices are starting after mountall.conf and udev.conf from /etc/init/cryptdisks-enable.conf (including /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions). This script read the /etc/crypttab and /etc/default/cryptdisks to create or open the crypted devices. The mountall.conf runs the new command mountall (binary!) that reads the /etc/fstab and tries to mount all devices described therein (exclude the ones with noauto option). Mounting a closed or not created crypt-device like /dev/mapper/crypttmp isn't possible! This is the jumping point! It is necessary to open or create the crypt-devices BEFORE mounting them. root-Luks-cryptsetup-devices with passphrase-input over keyboard seems to open automatically before running the *.conf-files. This is my workaround: 1) Basics (with and without an external key-file) - log in as root (on console with sudo -s) - open /etc/init/cryptdisks-enable.conf in an editor - replace start on stopped udevtrigger with start on startup - save the script - open /etc/init/mountall.conf - replace start on startup with start on stopping cryptdisks-enable - save the script 2) Additionals (just for using a key-file on an external device) - determine the external device (USB-stick) (e.g. /dev/sdb1) - for rookies only: replace sdXY in the following codes with the determined indication of your external device - open (still as root) /etc/fstab - add /dev/sdXY /mnt ext2 noauto,ro,dev, nouser, async 0 0 - for rookies only: instead of /mnt you MUST choose the same directory you use for the key-file-path in /etc/crypttab - for rookies only: instead of ext2 you MUST choose the filesystem of your external device /dev/sdXY - for all: you can use other options, but MUST use noauto, because mountall.conf will try to mount it if that option isn't set - save fstab - open /etc/default/cryptdisks in an editor - replace 'CRYPTDISKS_MOUNT=' with 'CRYPTDISKS_MOUNT=/dev/sdXY' - save the script so far so good? It works, but... ... there is still a little problem left! /etc/init/cryptdisks-enable.conf mounts /dev/sdXY but couldn't close it after using. I think, because udevd isn't running at the point of mounting /dev/sdXY. The script udev.conf is started after the cryptdisks-enable.conf stopped. So the mount isn't written in /etc/mtab or given to /proc/mounts. fact: after booting the system, /dev/sdXY is still mounted on /mnt - but you cannot get any system-output for this! Nor df nor cat /etc/mtab nor cat /proc/mounts tells you something about it! solution: you can use umount /mnt to unmount it! umount /dev/sdXY don't work maybe because umount substitute /mnt for /dev/sdXY by looking at mtab or /proc/mounts before unmounting it? I think so. I wrote a little runlevel-script S05cryptUmount with that commandline and placed it in /etc/init.d and linked it from /etc/rc2.d/. On my old Athlon 2200+ system it works real fine! (until now - knock on wood - knock, knock - I'll see what happen if I install additional software...) Please post here, if your karmic-system doesn't boot up with this solution! I hope, this helps many people and the canonical-team to solve the init- problem(s). Nice to meet you - C U soon... Greetings from germany to the linux-community all over the world, all-by-my-self ** Description changed: Binary package hint: mountall I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest packages applied (apt-get uprade) Version of mountall: 1.0 Expected results: /dev/mapper/tmp should be mounted on /tmp Unexpected results: /dev/mapper/tmp is not mounted on /tmp In my /etc/crypttab I have: tmp /dev/sda2 /dev/urandom tmp swap /dev/sda3 /dev/urandom swap In my /etc/fstab I have (among other lines), this: /dev/mapper/tmp /tmp ext2 relatime02 - Most of the time the system boots OK, but /tmp never gets mounted. + Most of the time the system boots OK, but /tmp never gets mounted. About the colons, look in /var/log/rkhunter, and it'll tell you exactly what to whitelist. For named, I had to use named:9.4.2. Still, it seems silly that I have to whitelist apps that are in Ubuntu because of a root-kit checker that is in Ubuntu. I would have hoped that the distro would be more internally consistent. Given that Python 2.6 has a builtin sqlite3 module which is DBAPI 2.0 conformant (just as pysqlite2), what's the purpose of supporting an almost identical API in an external package? ** Changed in: python-pysqlite2 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete ** Changed in: python-pysqlite2 (Ubuntu) Assignee: Martin Pitt (pitti) = Chuck Short (zulcss) -- MIR for python-pysqlite2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/492047 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 490347] Re: Migrate to dh 7 and --with=kde
quassel (0.5.1-0ubuntu4) lucid; urgency=low * Migrate from cdbs to debhelper 7 build (will enable a double build with and without kdelibs in the future): - Do not build-depend on cdbs. - Build-depend on recent enough pkg-kde-tools (for dh --with=kde). - Bumped debhelper version dependency and compat. - Rewrote debian/rules to use dh instead of cdbs. - Added debian/clean, moved manpages there from debian/rules. - Added debian/docs to install README. Previously, CDBS auto-installed README and AUTHORS. This version does not install AUTHORS, since it is redundant with debian/copyright. -- Maia Kozheva si...@ubuntu.com Mon, 30 Nov 2009 17:02:20 +0600 ** Changed in: quassel (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress = Fix Released -- Migrate to dh 7 and --with=kde https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/490347 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 495128] [NEW] Cannot free the usb-stick memory by deleting it's components
Public bug reported: The operating system in which I found this bug is : Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 64-bit version Without using Usb Startup Disk Creator or any other program, I simply want to delete data from my usb stick. I expect that the usb stick's memory would be freed, in other words, that I will have free memory in the stick in the quantity equal with the size of the deleted data. Instead of this, if I choose to delete data by pressing the button delete from the keyboard, the file disappear from the pane and rubbish fill up. Then I check the usb stick form properties and I find that the memory has not been freed, it is the same as before I delete the chosen data. That happens even if I empty the rubbish folder. If I choose to delete data by transfer to rubbish option, it happens exactly the same as I described above. I later connected the usb stick in windows xp, and I found that the data I wished to delete were still 'untouched' in a file named Trash. I hope you consider this report. [Bug 495127] [NEW] Shutdown/restart dialogs is unlcear about whether people should wait
Public bug reported: Some informal user testing and feedback from bugs files tells us that some users think they need to wait for the shutdown dialog to finish the count before shutting down/rebooting. The dialogs need to be re-designed to make it clear that the system is ready to be shut down. Packaging, history, bug status ok. This indeed seems useful, and it also doesn't hurt that Caonical employs upstream :-) Approved.
