[Bug 495106] [NEW] Paper tray selection does not work

2009-12-10 Thread hyper_ch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

In the office we have a Canon iR 2570Ci printer. I got the according PPD
from the canon website and also tried the one from openprinting.org.
There are some PPDs supplied by Ubuntu but they don't have selection for
additional trays.

Anyway, the printer in the offices has 4 trays in total. What I tried to
do is to setup an openoffice document in such a way that the first page
will be taken from tray 1, the second page from tray 2 and the third
page from tray 3.

However it only printed to tray 1.

I'm currently using Kubuntu Karmic with the KDE 4.3.4 PPA. In addition I
have the updates, backports and proposed repos activated.

Localhost:631 returns CUPS 1.4.1.

Anyway, the problems lies with CUPS I think because I printed that
document to a postscript file. Upon opening that file (attached) I see
on line 980 that tray 1 should be used, on line 1448 tray 2 and on line
1897 tray 3. In my opinion (not an expert at all) it seems the
OpenOffice did correctly set the trays to be used. As Ubuntu uses CUPS
and OOo delivers to CUPS the problem must be between CUPS and the
printer.

Re: [Bug 484020] Re: [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning

2009-12-10 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Can we have a discussion on how things got to this point in the first
place? Why did Karmic ship with such a fatally flawed Intel driver? Who
made the decision that this code was suitable for a stable release?

I don't think such a discussion would be very fruitful [*]. What could
indeed be a fruitful discussion would be one about how to avoid
shipping an LTS in April with the same stability problems. Such a
discussion should take place on the ubuntu-x mailing list
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-x) and not on a bug
report.

I'm not an expert on xorg, but it seems that the batchbuffer dumps we
have sent upstream so far has not triggered any response. From
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24825 it seems that what
will be needed is that somebody affected by these problems get their
hands dirty and do some git-bisecting in order to find where the
problems were introduced. Brian Rogers has already started on that bug
report, but has only come as far as finding that the problem does not
occur with kernel 2.6.30, but is there in 2.6.31-rc1 - irrespective of
intel driver version. A first step would be to make sure that this is
also the case here, and then try to identify the commit that triggers
the freeze. My impression is that this would give the upstream
developers something to work on.

[*] Here is my impression in case you find it enlightening: First, I
don't agree that the intel driver has become flawed recently. It has
improved a lot over the recent iterations (we had some freeze bugs
like this on i9xx that are now gone). The problem seems to be one
introduced in the kernel (maybe a change there triggered a
long-existing bug in the driver). Second, there seems to have been
very few people testing Ubuntu development releases on i8xx chipsets.
There was a call for testing on the ubuntu-x mailing list back in
April, with some - but not overwhelming - response. Bug reports for
freezes on 845G and 855GM only started ticking in late October, see
[1] and [2] for lists. At this time, we were already in final freeze,
and since these bugs are hard to fix, it was at the time unrealistic
to get it fixed before the release. I think that it was only well
after the release that it became clear that a lot of people had this
problem.

[Bug 450097] Re: Cannot establish existing hidden wireless connection through GUI

2009-12-10 Thread fontinalis
Hello,

I am experiencing this in Karmic 32 bit on three machines with all the
current updates. This bug seems like it has been duped with others here:

This looks like the original:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/446394

Duped in these:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/449287
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/455161
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/461385

If this is indeed a dup of #446394 it should be marked as so and folks
should post comments on the 446394 thread.

Cheers,
brook

[Bug 495108] [NEW] OpenOffice does not use system default printer and settings

2009-12-10 Thread hyper_ch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

I noticed that OpenOffice does not respect the default printer settings
as set by the KDE 4.3.4 systemsettings. I have multiple printers in
there and when I changes the settings OpenOffice does not respect that.

It seems that OOo uses a seperate config for all that. I was finally
able to accomodate OpenOffice printer settings by running:

/usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin

This is quite inconvenient as printer needs to be configured at
different locations.

[Bug 493865] Re: Brasero doesn't perform automatic Checksum Verify

2009-12-10 Thread Bruce R
Today's Ubuntu 10.04 Daily Release contains Brasero 2.29.3 which also
doesn't burnproof via Checksum verify.

Pity, Ubuntu 9.04's Brasero 2.26.1 had succeeded in temporarily
replacing Windows-hosted Nero Burning or ImgBurn as THE reliable Disc
Burner on my rigs, so another Linux missed opportunity.

(Shades of two steps forward plus three backwards.)

[Bug 265010] Re: pulseaudio 0.9.11 ppa Luke real-time/high-priority scheduling not working

2009-12-10 Thread Oliver Joos
AFAIK rtkit is planned for 10.04 (Lucid). In 9.10 (Karmic) your
pulseaudio daemon can gain high-priority and realtime scheduling by
editing /etc/security/limits.conf. For each desktop user add the
following 2 lines:

$USER - nice -11 # values from -20 upto 19 allowed
$USER - rtprio 9 # values from 1 upto 99 allowed

Each user who wants high-priority and/or realtime scheduling then may copy
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf into his ~/.pulse and change the following lines (with
leading ; removed!):
high-priority = yes # default no
rlimit-nice = 31 # default 31, values higher than 31 are interpreted
as 31!
nice-level = -11 # default -11, lowest value allowed: (20 -
rlimit-nice), lower means more CPU-%

realtime-scheduling = yes # default no
rlimit-rtprio = 9 # default 9, values from -20 upto 19 allowed
realtime-priority = 9 # default 5, highest value allowed: rlimit-rtprio,
higher means more priority

These instructions are valid for pulseaudio running in user mode (which
is the default).

[Bug 475936] Re: /dev/mapper/tmp encrypted with /dev/urandom not mounted on bootup

2009-12-10 Thread all-by-my-self
Hi out there!

I had the same problem. On jaunty no problems but on karmic (complete
updated on 4th Dec).

The new canonical-special init-system isn't perfect.

This routes to the unmountable (non-luks-) cryptsetup-devices:

The new init-system don't use the old /etc/inittab. That file is
replaced by the *.conf-files in /etc/init/.

The *.conf-files uses a syntax for starting themselfs by events (see man
startup, starting, started, stopping and stopped).

A normal init starts at /etc/init/mountall.conf (and maybe some others).
If started the script starts /etc/init/udev.conf. These scripts start
other scripts. And so on.

The cryptsetup-devices are starting after mountall.conf and udev.conf
from /etc/init/cryptdisks-enable.conf (including
/lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions). This script read the
/etc/crypttab and /etc/default/cryptdisks to create or open the crypted
devices.

The mountall.conf runs the new command mountall (binary!) that reads
the /etc/fstab and tries to mount all devices described therein (exclude
the ones with noauto option).

Mounting a closed or not created crypt-device like /dev/mapper/crypttmp
isn't possible! This is the jumping point! It is necessary to open or
create the crypt-devices BEFORE mounting them.

root-Luks-cryptsetup-devices with passphrase-input over keyboard seems
to open automatically before running the *.conf-files.

This is my workaround:

1) Basics (with and without an external key-file)

 - log in as root (on console with sudo -s)
 - open /etc/init/cryptdisks-enable.conf in an editor
 - replace start on stopped udevtrigger with start on startup
 - save the script
 - open /etc/init/mountall.conf
 - replace start on startup with start on stopping cryptdisks-enable
 - save the script

2) Additionals (just for using a key-file on an external device)

 - determine the external device (USB-stick) (e.g. /dev/sdb1)
 - for rookies only: replace sdXY in the following codes with the determined
indication of your external device
 - open (still as root) /etc/fstab
 - add /dev/sdXY /mnt ext2 noauto,ro,dev,nouser,async 0 0
 - for rookies only: instead of /mnt you MUST choose the same directory you use
for the key-file-path in /etc/crypttab
 - for rookies only: instead of ext2 you MUST choose the filesystem of your
external device /dev/sdXY
 - for all: you can use other options, but MUST use noauto, because
mountall.conf will try to mount it if that option isn't set
 - save fstab
 - open /etc/default/cryptdisks in an editor
 - replace 'CRYPTDISKS_MOUNT=' with 'CRYPTDISKS_MOUNT=/dev/sdXY'
 - save the script

so far so good? It works, but...

... there is still a little problem left!

/etc/init/cryptdisks-enable.conf mounts /dev/sdXY but couldn't close it
after using. I think, because udevd isn't running at the point of
mounting /dev/sdXY. The script udev.conf is started after the
cryptdisks-enable.conf stopped. So the mount isn't written in /etc/mtab
or given to /proc/mounts.

fact: after booting the system, /dev/sdXY is still mounted on /mnt - but
you cannot get any system-output for this! Nor df nor cat /etc/mtab
nor cat /proc/mounts tells you something about it!

solution: you can use umount /mnt to unmount it! umount /dev/sdXY
don't work maybe because umount substitute /mnt for /dev/sdXY by looking
at mtab or /proc/mounts before unmounting it? I think so.

I wrote a little runlevel-script S05cryptUmount with that commandline
and placed it in /etc/init.d and linked it from /etc/rc2.d/.

On my old Athlon 2200+ system it works real fine! (until now - knock on
wood - knock, knock - I'll see what happen if I install additional
software...)

Please post here, if your karmic-system doesn't boot up with this
solution!

I hope, this helps many people and the canonical-team to solve the init-
problem(s).

Nice to meet you - C U soon...

Greetings from germany to the linux-community all over the world,

[Bug 446394] Re: Connect to Hidden...select Saved Secure Connection; Connect not possible

2009-12-10 Thread fontinalis
Hello,

I am experiencing this in Karmic 32 bit on three machines with all the
current updates. This bug seems like it has been duped with others here:

This looks like the original:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...et/+bug/446394

Post #20 in this post worked for my Broadcom BCM4318 with the b43xx
cutter driver. .

Duped in these:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/450097 - looks like the original
bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...et/+bug/449287 - marked as dup of 446394
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/455161 - marked as dup of 446394
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...et/+bug/461385 - marked as dup of 450097

Can someone please confirm that 445161, 449287, 443694 are dups of
450097 and mark them as so. It may be less confusing for devs and users
alike.

If people are still experiencing this like I was on a Broadcom BCM4318,
probably no need to hack the driver with all the workarounds in ubuntu
forum posts about uninstalling the b43xx driver and using ndiswrapper,
etc...Those hacks were unnecessary in my case.

Cheers,
brook

[Bug 493607] Re: rkhunter reports openssl and sshd versions out of date

2009-12-10 Thread Alan Porter
About the colons, look in /var/log/rkhunter, and it'll tell you exactly
what to whitelist. For named, I had to use named:9.4.2.

Still, it seems silly that I have to whitelist apps that are in Ubuntu
because of a root-kit checker that is in Ubuntu. I would have hoped
that the distro would be more internally consistent.

As it stands, I have spent a little time this morning to make sure that
I do not get a bunch of false-positive emails from all of my servers.
Those got old very quickly.

[Bug 495115] [NEW] gdb segfaults after a program it is debugging segfaults, restarts, and reaches a break point

2009-12-10 Thread Soap Star Joe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdb

gdb is crashing when i restart a segfaulted program and reach a
breakpoint. I'm debugging some simple data transforms via a test program
(i'll try to attach), which fails when run on itself(not the bug i'm
reporting). I set a breakpoint before the first run at line
data_transforms.c:156(middle of a for loop). When it reaches the break
for the first time in the new run, it segfaults.

I'm running 9.10 karmic, with uname -a:

Linux schrodingers-grue-box 2.6.31-16-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 3
22:00:22 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

apt-cache reports gdb as: Architecture: i386 Version: 7.0-0ubuntu1

I attached gdb to gdb, caused the segfault again, and recieved the
following backtrace:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Bug 488835] Re: MIR for irqbalance

2009-12-10 Thread Kees Cook
I would like to see this using either libcap2 or libcap-ng in the build-
deps. libcap-ng is in universe, and libcap2 would require a small
amount of porting (there is a single use of the libcap-ng routines).
Beyond that, it looks totally fine to me. +1 on the use of a
capabilities library.

This bug was fixed in the package quilt - 0.48-1ubuntu1

---
quilt (0.48-1ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian testing, remaining changes:
- debian/patches/check_series_is_no_dir: Check that series is not a
  directory.

quilt (0.48-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Martin Quinson ]
  * New upstream release.
  * debian/patches/generic-awk: removed since merged upstream.
  * debian/patches/*: updated so that they apply again on this release.

  [ Raphaël Hertzog ]
  * Remove Simon Hormans from Uploaders with his permission.
  * debian/patches/fix-manpage-generation: fix Makefile so that
the manual page is correctly generated with dash too (LP: #402237)
  * Improve dh_quilt_patch/unpatch by respecting the QUILT_PATCH_DIR
environment variable like /usr/share/quilt/quilt.make does.
Closes: #544668

  [ Ryan Niebur ]
  * Add myself to Uploaders
  * fixes to the arch_all patch to pass test suite
- port upstream changes to the c version to the bash rewrite
  of backup-files
- fix backup-files to process all files passed in on the
command line instead of just the last (a clear bug)
  * refresh all patches with -p ab
  * add procmail to build deps, needed by tests
  * Debian Policy 3.8.3

[Bug 495121] [NEW] Compiz crashes on unlocking screensaver

2009-12-10 Thread andypiper
Public bug reported:

I'm running Compiz on NVIDIA 185.18.36, Ubuntu 9.10, Thinkpad T61p,
2.6.31-16-generic-pae #52-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 3 23:18:13 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux)

If I let the screensaver kick in and the screen get locked, and then go
away for a while, *sometimes* compiz.real will crash on unlocking the
screen. I haven't yet been able to track down a definite repeatable
instance though.

The error in the compiz debug / crash log is:
#0 0xb78ba430 in __kernel_vsyscall ()
#1 0xb7556513 in waitpid () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6

Guess this could be related to X, nvidia driver, compiz, screensaver,
rss-glx (I've tried different screensavers), kernel, memory usage... I
just don't know :-(

[Bug 492734] Re: ntpd profile in Xubuntu 8.04 LTS is unconfined on boot

2009-12-10 Thread Aquina
I never changed the start order and as you already said the orderng is
correct. Further I noticed (on Xubuntu 8.04) and Ubuntu Server 8.04 NTP
being started and stopped during the boot proccess. I always thought it
was a normal behavior. ;-) What I found in /etc/network/if-
up.d/ntpdate though (hell I have ntpd, ntpdate and rdate installed just
to satisfy obscure dependencies) surprised me! Is that the default
script? I never changed anything in /etc/network/ or /etc/dhcp3/ (using
static IP).

[Bug 491521] Re: Decorations and RGBA

2009-12-10 Thread Andrea Cimitan
but what about decorating the buttons (window controls)? I have not tried yet,
but I guess that the detail in gtk_paint_box works for the window border, but
not its controls!
Also, how does shadow work? how could the engine know if the border has to be
rounded or squared?

all the crashes of totem, terminal etc etc depends on embedded windows,
like gstreamer (banshee's now playing), rhythmbox's visualization, or
terminal which uses a rgba window for the terminal screen

[Bug 466960] Re: Can't write via davfs2

It looks like that is not a problem of the davfs-deb package. Because,
manual compiling and installing of davfs version 1.4.5 from

[Bug 481104] Re: mythtranscode doesn't exit on completion

2009-12-10 Thread Fisslefink
I have the same problem with a script designed to export shows for
viewing on my iPod touch. Like Brent, the major problem for me is that
the stalled mythtranscode processes prevent the system from shutting
down automatically.

Output of 'mythshutdown -s;echo $?' is 1 (Transcoding)

I am running Mythbuntu 9.10 with latest updates. I do have a custom
package of ffmpeg (with libx264 support) installed, following Post #1 on

[Bug 441941] Re: grub fails after running Windows

2009-12-10 Thread Ignazio Carpitella
Stopping the PC Angel service in Windows - as suggested by PhoneixS -
and reinstalling GRUB2 from the live CD solved the problem on my old HP
510 laptop.

Despite of the complicate guides one can find on the web, reinstalling
GRUB2 from live CD is very simple. After booting, open a terminal and
type:

sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt
sudo grub-install /dev/sda --root-directory=/mnt

changing sda7 with the disk partition containing your /boot directory.

Thank you to PhoneixS and everyone else who contributed.

I have deactivated the driver. If it stops working again, will uninstall it.

[Bug 431217] Re: package ttf-mscorefonts-installer 2.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-12-10 Thread Bruce R

'Mark for Removal' etc is a bit like throwing out the baby with the
dirty bath water, as it removes a lot of other useful things that work
OK, but sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer removes just the
offending package that otherwise perpetuates a rejection cycle when

[Bug 490347] Re: Migrate to dh 7 and --with=kde

2009-12-10 Thread Scott Kitterman
quassel (0.5.1-0ubuntu4) lucid; urgency=low

  * Migrate from cdbs to debhelper 7 build (will enable a double build with and
without kdelibs in the future):
- Do not build-depend on cdbs.
- Build-depend on recent enough pkg-kde-tools (for dh --with=kde).
- Bumped debhelper version dependency and compat.
- Rewrote debian/rules to use dh instead of cdbs.
- Added debian/clean, moved manpages there from debian/rules.
- Added debian/docs to install README. Previously, CDBS auto-installed
README and AUTHORS. This version does not install AUTHORS, since it is
  redundant with debian/copyright.

[Bug 495128] [NEW] Cannot free the usb-stick memory by deleting it's components

2009-12-10 Thread Efthymis Oraiopoulos
Public bug reported:

The operating system in which I found this bug is : Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic
Koala, 64-bit version

Without using Usb Startup Disk Creator or any other program, I simply want to
delete data from my usb stick.
I expect that the usb stick's memory would be freed, in other words, that I
will have free memory in the stick in the quantity equal with the size of the
deleted data.

Instead of this,
if I choose to delete data by pressing the button delete from the keyboard,
the file disappear from the pane and rubbish fill up. Then I check the usb
stick form properties and I find that the memory has not been freed, it is
the same as before I delete the chosen data. That happens even if I empty the
rubbish folder.
If I choose to delete data by transfer to rubbish option, it happens exactly
the same as I described above.

I later connected the usb stick in windows xp, and I found that the data I
wished to delete were still 'untouched' in a file named Trash.

I hope you consider this report.
