[Bug 477752] Re: microphone only works in select applications, acer timeline 4810

2010-12-21 Thread wilcoxjay
I know this report has long gone cold, but in case anyone else is still
having this problem, I fixed mine today by following the instructions
here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireTimeline/Fixes#Internal%20microphone
. Basically, mute the left channel of the mic while leaving the right
channel maxed, and it works. Not sure how/why that works.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 612657] [NEW] users authenticated via kerberos cannot login using gnome, only console

2010-08-02 Thread wilcoxjay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

On lucid, we have a local admin user as well as authentication setup to
a kerberos server for our lab users. The local admin has no trouble
logging in on console or through Gnome, but kerberos users can only
login to a console. When a kerberos user attempts to login via the GUI,
the authentication is accepted, but the login hangs with just a blank
background and a (working) mouse pointer.

** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 477752] Re: microphone only works in select applications, acer timeline 4810

2009-11-29 Thread wilcoxjay
I hate to be a bother again with no new information, but I'd really like
to push for this to be fixed. It seems to me that it is a superficial
lack of communication between some of the little people which make my
computer go. I'd love to fix this myself if someone could point me in
the direction of what I should be reading to understand the problem.

Thanks for your time and effort.

[Bug 477752] Re: microphone only works in select applications, acer timeline 4810

2009-11-12 Thread wilcoxjay
I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I was reading man pages and saw
something about 'pacmd', so I was poking around in that shell. Found the
command 'list-source-outputs' and ran it first when recording (successfully)
with Sound Recorder, then ran it when unsuccessfully attempting to record with
skype. I thought perhaps it might help.

[Bug 477752] [NEW] microphone only works in select applications, acer timeline 4810

2009-11-07 Thread wilcoxjay
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 karmic. I have an Acer Timeline 4810tz.

I can record sounds with my internal mic using Sound Recorder and
Audacity, but in chat clients (I've tested pidgin, empathy, and Skype),
I can't get my mic to work (ie, the person I'm chatting with can't hear
me). Perhaps this is a bug in each of these programs, but it seems
unlikely to me.

Let me know about any further information you require.

[Bug 438489] Re: notify-osd assert failure: *** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0x00000000025667a8 ***

2009-09-30 Thread wilcoxjay
A couple of things:

1) Today, every new message that comes into mail-notification is
triggering a fallback-dialog for me. I'm still running notify-osd in
valgrind/gdb so I see the error message. It is

** (notify-osd:3449): DEBUG: notification request turned into a dialog
box, because it contains at least one action callback (mail-open:
Open)

** (notify-osd:3449): WARNING **: fallback_dialog_show(): Got error
Error on line 3 char 1: 'email_address' is not a valid name: '@'

where email_address is the sender of the new email. Also, the open button
does nothing, but probably this is not a notify-osd bug, but maybe a
mail-notification bug. Note that although the fallback-dialog is triggered,
this doesn't trigger a crash of notify-osd (which was the case with my original
apport report).

2) I branched and compiled notify-osd from trunk, as you suggested, and
ran the test. It brings up a dailog; I click Action; and the terminal
says /libnotify/test_withlib_actions: OK. What I think you were asking
is whether this would give me a crash; it did not.

To recap: First, today, I don't have to do anything special to trigger
the fallback-dialog; it happens every time (yesterday, I thought it only
happened sometimes, but maybe I'm not remembering correctly). Also, I
still can't get notify-osd to crash (been running in valgrind for nearly
48 hours now). Secondly, the test from notify-osd trunk passed (if I'm
interpreting your question and the output properly).

Please let me know what other information I can provide to help.

James

Attached: 1) Probably useless (as there have been no crashes) valgrind log.
2) Some random error messages printed on the terminal while running notify-osd
under valgrind. (Email addresses removed for privacy).

mail-notification sometimes displays these dialogs, but I can't discern
any pattern (it sometimes uses the bubbles). also, the mail notification
icon frequently disappears from my system tray, but it's still running
(verifiable through ps aux and by the fact that it still notifies (by
sound and bubbles/dialogs) on new mail).
