[videoblogging] Re: Apple TV
I'd gladly pick up some overtime to buy one of these puppies, but we don't actually own a television set. Anyone know whether I can add Apple TV to our lives with an InFocus digital projector? I feel so strongly that it would work (that might just be the power of The Wish) but the Apple site just says television, television, television all over it. Not a word about projectors anyplace. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Apple TV
Weird that. You'd think they'd be wanting to sell the home cinema dream. It will work fine. It has a component video out and standard RCA audio outputs as well as HDMI, if you have compatibility for that on your projector. I got my brother in law kitted up with a Windows Media Center this weekend - he only has a projector, no TV, and it was super easy. Ran a component video signal out from his standard Nvidia graphics card to his projector and audio to his surround sound box - badabing. Same for the Apple TV - it will have all the outputs you need. Windows Media Center looks great so far, and (I've said it before) seems a better bet to me than Apple TV. He can put his cable TV through it, record on it, as well as do all the photo, music and video management, and play DVDs. Easy to set up to pick up videoblogs and podcasts through Newsgator in the Online Spotlight part of Media Center. He has music imported into both iTunes and Windows Media so that he can see which he likes best. He uses the Windows Media remote, and we are going to try to do what Steve Watkins was talking about - get a Wii remote working as a point-and-click wand for his projector screen. Which would be very cool. What's sometimes difficult to understand in the digital group dynamic is that you can always step up and fill in the gaps. Just do it. No one needs blessings or permission. Re: [videoblogging] My videoblogging roots and today's NYTimes article
Josh, You damn chalk terrorist. How do we know that white substance wasn't some sort of poison or bomb material? Ok, honestly, this is amazing, I watched the footage and got the gist of the article. I would feel pretty weird about this, if I were you and, in fact, I feel pretty weird about it and I'm me. The positive side is that you do have so much on record, and it's definately a wake up call (in a series of recent wake up calls, including Josh Wolf) for all of us. ... Here's what the NYTimes reported in the Sunday edition: City Police Spied Broadly Before G.O.P. Convention http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/25/nyregion/25infiltrate.html?ex=1332561600en=3af0cd0ac568e430ei=5124partner=permalinkexprod=permalink Bikes Against Bush http://www.bikesagainstbush.com was my graduate thesis project, a combination of mechanical engineering, WiFi, interactive mobile messaging, and videoblogging. It was featured in Popular Science magazine for the engineering design of the bicycle that printed chalk text messages sent through SMS and from my website onto streets and sidewalks in NYC. Apparently, the NYPD considered this project to be a threat and was determined to shut it down. They had a copy of the Popular Science article in a file along with 4 pages of notes as to why my project was a threat. This led to my bizarre arrest, which happened on national television while I was being interviewed by Ron Reagan on MSNBC's Hardball. I was arrested with no crime being committed. Just simply plucked from the street, jailed for 24 hours, and my computer, cell phone and bicycle confiscated and held for over a year (the bicycle was never returned). The fake charges against me were dropped 6 months later. The NYTimes article confirms what I had long suspected -- that the NYPD was unlawfully conducting surveillance of artists, activists, and others seeking to exercise free speech at the RNC convention in 2004. Immediately after this project, I began working on software to distribute video via RSS. I met Jay Dedman around this time in NYC, and we began working together. Yes. No sport at all. Take any show with any topic and put attractive women/girls in it, and you'll have guys that watch the show just to see the girls. :) NO interest whatsoever in what the topic is or what she said. They could probably tell you more about what she was (or wasn't) wearing than what the episode was about. :D Still, assuming you're correct that women aren't taking advantage of this, they really should be. Porno chicks have relatively short-lived careers because they can't maintain their body-types for more than a few years. They should be able to parlay their industry experience into production or managerial positions instead of hitting the has-been strip club circuit. It's a very interesting (and hard) question... Jan I hadn't given any thought to the statistics behind whether it's men or women that exploit the advantage over silly men of sex sells, but I'd have to guess that you're right and that there aren't enough women behind the camera as it were in these situations. Women are being 'used' to drive interest in shows or websites, but other than being hired as on-air talent, they're probably not too involved in the process. I wonder how tough it would be for a group of women to get together and create a production company or whatever to 'exploit' their own (meaning women in general, not THE women of the production company. :D) aesthetic advantages. A possible reason why not is that ambitious women wouldn't be inclined to 'stoop so low' to add to the stereotype of utilizing sex or sexuality to make a profit. Who knows? Im guessing those sorts of resolutions and bitrates will cause files to be too large for most to consider, so I doubt the masses will change to a higher res/bitrate, but hopefulyl a few vlogs that specialise in HD will offer such versions. The stuff about 1280x only working at 24fps is a little crazy, sort of a bad point for their box to run out of decoding power, especially as apples quicktime conversion option defaults to lowering the res to 960x540 rather than messing with the framerate, if your source material is 30fps. [videoblogging] Re: Apple TV
Oops sorry about the typos in that message, I meant projector and HDMI. Oooh I wasnt at all interested in an Apple TV for myself due to not wanting to have to reencode other formats before being able to watch them, but the wikipedia entry for Apple TV has this line... Shortly after Apple TV was in the hands of users, various Apple news sites reported that hacking the device to play the Xvid video format is possible by removing the hard drive, installing it into a Mac and installing the proper software and drivers. And the spec of the hardware has been worked out now, its a bit more like a full computer than I realised: # Intel Pentium-M Crofton Processor[1] (based on Pentium-M Dothan) * 1.0 GHz * 2 MiB of L2 cache * 350 MHz underclocked system bus # NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 (64 MB VRAM) # 256 MB of 400 MHz DDR2 SDRAM # 40 GB hard disk # USB 2.0 (for diagnostic use only) Time will tell how hackable it is, maybe not so much but the xvid thing sounds like a promising start. Anyway sorry for sounding harsh about Windows Media Center again, its not that bad, I just dont think you can compare like for like. The Apple TV is more like a media center extender than a full PC windows media center, and this is reflected in the price. Seems like it uses a 48Watt power supply, which isnt awful although when I monitored the G5 2Ghz iMac 20 it was using about 78Watts when just doing some casual websurfing,, and that includes the backlight for the screen. We'll find out what disgusting wattage my fairly modest 26 LCD TV uses during vlog week if I get my finger out. Hmm maybe I will shutup and go and try Vista's Media Center for format compatibility like I said I was gonna the other week. Also dunno if you remember that PC-inside-a-LCD-TV that I linked to the other week, but I saw a recent Mac rumor that suggested the next iMac may have a TV tuner other features, so maybe that will be equivalent and a farier comparison to a Windows Mdia Center if its true. Thanks for drawing attention to the positives of the group, all too easy to not mention things that are ok, but praises should be sung so fir play :) Compared to many other groups Ive knows, the elitist label is indeed bullshit. Ive already said why I dont think its true, and the few areas where maybe theres something in it, and should be looked into further. It would be a tad melodramatic to say that a berlin-wall like structure exists between 'oldschool videobloggers' and youtubers, but all the same there are some gaps and I appluad those whove posted very recently to discuss the idea of promoting videoblogweek on youtube, bingo! Im not sure how it will go down with people there but hopefully someone has the balls to try. As for me, well Hodders, Im not exactly known for being much of a do-er. So I may well be annoying if Im seen to be forever standing at the sideline barking instructions at those who are actually doing stuff and really dont need me telling them how to think act. What others have been able to achieve is even more amazing to me because I dont think I could come anywhere close to that stuff, so I am often in awe. But I mostly talk a lot when Im being negative so that is overlooked. My points in this case were really to try to have a conversation about what else could be done, specifically in terms of reaching out to people who have not been touched at all by the last 2.5 years. I love the node's and Im curious how active they are simply because they dont get talked about so much here these days. I suppose all the people that tried hard to get the mainstream media to write articles about vlogging in the past, gave interviews etc, have done a lot to raise awareness. And again this used to be talked about a little more in the past, when it was new, so Im not sure to what extent it continues today. Maybe its easier for mainstream presss to be lazy now because they can talk about vlogging using more familar story geners/formulas - eg shows that get their creators picked up by big media, the business success of youtube, etc? I quite liked it when Time said the person of the year waas 'you' but it seemed to get quite a lot of stick, some said it was a copout! As for me I'll just have to hope an existing youtuber can spread the videoblogweek word, cos Ive got to learn to help myself before I can really try to encourage others to vlog. [videoblogging] Re: Times Online: The Empires Strike Back
I think you're right. The last paragraph is confusing because it's hedging. He mentions that Amanda is an internet star and that she joined ABC... and then he doesn't draw any conclusions from that. The article skims over the entire genre of sit in front of my webcam videos by saying there is clearly a lot of appeal for many people in connecting to others and sharing things online. It's not just the piracy and one-off accident videos that fuels YT. It's also the feeling of being connected to whomever you subscribe to. Regardless of how many times you watch an MSM video, whether it's on the internet or not, you're not going to learn A THING about the actors. It also talks about the battle, as you put it, when there really IS no battle. Talent is Talent. Period. MSM has no corner on the market of TALENT, and it never will, merely by its own proceeses of selection. If you're physically unattractive, or are deemed unmarketable for some other reason by the powers that be, you can have all the talent in the world, and you're not going to end up on television. Yes, there are roles that call for goofy guys or overweight girls or what-have-you, but for the most part, when you look at MSM shows, you see attractive, in-shape, intelligent (according to the script) individuals. By self-definition, MSM excludes the vast majority of the population. Internet distribution makes it so that someone with talent can express themselves without having to go to casting calls or having headshots or acting lessons or a degree in ANYTHING at all. That leaves tons of talented people in the wild with the ability to make anything they want and distribute it world-wide on the same day that they create it. How many times have you ended up in a park somewhere, and there was some musician that was clearly more talented than people you've heard on records and you wondered How come THIS person doesn't have a deal? Maybe they don't want on, but maybe they weren't OFFERED one, because they're not seen as marketable. At this point, it doesn't matter. They could do a world-wide concert every single week. -- Bill C. http://TheLab.ReelSolid.TV --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/the_web/article1572023.ece?openComment=true The video website created by NBC and News Corp is a statement of belief in the power of the professional to stand up to amateur video Its a strange article that threw me completely in the last paragraph and left me unsure exactly what it was saying. I think you can invent your own sins, doesnt have to be the 7 classic ones. But then again you can invent your own theme, as I doubt most of the videos of that week will all stick to one theme anyways, bu its fun to think about anyway. Bill, thank's for the nice remarks! I really liked the Bloger Businness 2007 vid. I nearly didn't get this thing done. I'd shot and edited all week in San Jose, posting every day..twice Tuesday. Thursday i went around and got some big idea interviews and digitized them. Traveled on Friday and planned to edit at work Saturday(slow day at NBC/dc bureau) when the powerbook went pear-shaped on me. Steve, I covered the network2 grand prize winner. Hell, I got the money shot! I filed video every day...TWICE on Tuesday. Poke around my site and you'll see the posts. My interest was in the business opportunity there. There were a whole range of interests represented there from changing the world to taking over the world (of media at least). I dont suppose there was anybody there looking at models not involving advertising were there? Has anybody done any market research to see if there are enough viewers out there who object to being sold to advertisers by the show producers or networks? I dont think I can ever attend a show like this because the first time someone mentioned fame being a currency or how I can have a deeper meaningful human relationship with my bank, there would be a strange noise coming out just below my nose, and I would have to leave lol. But thats just a person preference that I overstate, did I see a company in that vid thats trying automatic product injection? Steve Garfield was a breath of fresh air in that video. That subtitling service is interesting if they can get enough people to use it. Anything else from VON? Nobody here talked about that pulver net video freedom petition or the network2 contest winners, and I saw some press release about a Veoh-neetwork2 partnership, was much else video-related announced? [videoblogging] Re: iTunes trouble and BlipTV feed
I've had repeated trouble uploading .mov Quicktime files to Blip that I've managed to upload without problems at Veoh YouTube. I understand where you are coming from. I use Blip to cross post to my vlog which is the way most people see my videos. The people at Blip are really nice dedicated folks. Let's face it, they give us something for nothing and don't infringe copyrights, etc. They are really at the spiritual center' of the vlogging movement in so many ways. Those really involved in all this have Blips in our heart for Blip.TV :-) However, I know how upsetting ti is when something that has worked so well in the past and that you have come to take for granted suddenly devcelops a bug that threatens to bring down your entire vlogging dreamworld. I haven't even explored features like crossposting that I believe are offerred by sites like Veoh (where I also post). If Ryanne Hodson and Jay Dedman hadn't been volunteering at the NYC ashort-lived Node101 storefront on weekends back in the fall of 2005, I'm not sure I would have ever even gotten my RSS feed up and running. I still haven't figured out how to add a description to it in Feedburner or MeFeedia so I really don't get the subscriptions I might. None of us should put all our eggs in one basket. That is why I post on three sites: Blip, Veoh YouTube. Each site offers something special. Blip is great at crossposting. Veoh has an educated and cultured viewership I've not found elsewhere allows you to publish v ideos of any length. YouTube has the masses--most of whom are mindless consumers. YouTube is like a mammoth garbage dump with crown jewels buried here and there. If you know how to searchg, use subscriptions favorites, etc. and you're willing to settle for low quality videos if you use SnapzPro to capture videos from the Internet, YouTube has real things to offer too. I'd personally like to know more about Google some of the other hosting sites folks use and what their opinions are regarding them. Originally, I stuck strictly with Blip because I thought I might want to use my videos in a commercial documentary. Then I got corrupted by the much greater traffic and reactions I could get to my videos on Veoh and YouTube. At this point, for me, my message is the medium, and I've really stopped caring about ownership rights, etc. I want to share my videos with as many people as I can find to watch them. That said, my heart still belongs to Blip and I'll put up with as many shortcomings as I can before seeking other options. I really hope that day never comes.
