[videoblogging] Screencast: Demystifying Web Analytics

2007-06-26 Thread Beth Kanter
Hi Folks:

I just finished a screencast - a primer to understanding web analytics using
google analytics.
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2007/06/new-screencast-.html

I included a wiki companion with lots of useful articles on the topic
http://analytics.wikispaces.com/

Now, onto researching video analytics

I read on newteevee about this video analytics service just the other

That or alternatives would certainly be potentially useful for people
who put their videos on a variety of sites.

If I was into this stuff myself Id probably take a close interest in
other things not directly related to the videos themselves, like how
many people link to your site, google pagerank, general buzz about
your stuff, number of comments on the site.

 Cheers

I am looking forward to your filtering through all of the different
choices Beth. We are in the early stages of this, and it is a very
  imprecise (and frustrating) activity.

We've used GA, Urchin, Feedburner and now Blip for measurements. Along
with cross-posting some stuff to YouTube.

We hosted our videos on a separate media server (sep from the WP
install) up until a month ago. We have found that GA and Urchin do not
agree; many say GA under reports.

On our media server, we have Urchin data that shows the actual data
transferred per file type and per file path. We trust that more than
hits or views as the TV Tonic service downloads media in multiple
sessions that can generate wildly inflated numbers for some criteria.
Seems that actual bandwidth tells us what files were being downloaded.

The main thing is that all of these companies use their own
(fluctuating) algorithms. So for example, one day they might count all
requests for a file from iTunes, but the next day they might disregard
all requests for the file after the first request, within a 24 hour
time period. (I heard this from a source.) Thing is, my Mom watches
our show in iTunes. Whenever anyone comes over to the house, she shows
them a few episodes too. From an aggregator's point of view, it may
look like one person viewing same files multiple times. In reality it
is more like the magazine sitting on the doctor's office coffee table
  - in fact more people are watching it.

Feedburner went through one of these tweaks a while back and people
saw their subscriber base change by 20-30% in 24 hours. :-)

YouTube provides some stats on views, and there is also this service
that is providing stats for YouTube, Metacafe, MySpace, Yahoo, Revver,
  and AOL video:
  http://www.tubemogul.com
TubeMogul is command central for those that publish and monitor
online video, as well as for organizations that advertise within
  online video.

My friends at Aweli are also working on an independent stats
verification service; hopefully they'll chime in here too.

Gathering data across so many services and then trying to find those
who have republished our feed and provide no stats...is leading me to
worry less and less about stats.

After all, it's not so much about how many watched, but how were they
  affected by the media?

analytics for nonprofits to measure mission - but with a focus on
 more
traditional online strategies (not social media). I have been
 interviewing
analytics geeks and experts including Avanish Kaushik.

While not the content for the screen, I went off on a social
 media metrics
tangent focusing on what metrics one might use to measure
 success of a
blog. (And that 's up for debate as whether you can really
 measure that ..
   http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2007/05/measuring_your_.html

Okay, so now I'm thinking about that means in terms of tracking
 viewership
of video blog - and have a few questions:

What metrics do you use to track the success or audience growth
 of your
video blog? A few come to mind like - video views, RSS
 subscribers, unique
visitors to your blog/vlog, search engine referrals, technorati
 rating
   (huge
   grain of salt), etc.

What tools do you use to track these things? I've been using google
analytics, get clickety, and feedburner ... ..

What do you think of the stat programs by the various video hosts?

   Your thoughts?

[videoblogging] Announcing The Everyday Heroes Project: (A Summer Project for New Media)

2007-06-26 Thread Jeff Pulver
Announcing The Everyday Heroes Project: (A Summer Project for New
Media Enthusiasts)

NBC's epic drama Heroes chronicles the lives of ordinary people who
discover they possess extraordinary abilities. I believe this concept
can be extended outside of the realm of science-fiction and into our
daily lives. During the course of the summer of 2007, help us tell the
stories of everyday people who are Everyday Heroes.

Think about a typical day, all the people you pass by in the course of
doing what you do, those to whom you might say Good Morning; the
people who work in your favorite eating establishments, the people who
you see in the bank, the gym, people you pass by on the street, people
who attend your school, people who you work with, the people in your
car pool, the people around you who just fade to black when you are
engaged in your daily lives. Yes, those people.

My belief is that everyone has a story.

Some of them are amazing people with amazing stories. Some people have
overcome some great odds before the point where they got to be
standing there to speak with you. Some of these people have taken on
major challenges and overcame them. Some of these people inspire
others. Some are people who challenge the status quo, who make a
difference.

Every one has a story to tell. But you need to be there to listen to
it. One cool aspect is that once you hear these stories, you will
never look at that person the same way ever again.

So go outside and take your video cameras and your microphones with
you. Join our Everyday Heroes Project and help provide a voice to
the people who are part of your everyday lives, but until now have
been silent. Post these stories to the web, to Blip.tv or YouTube or
Brightcove. Tag them everydayheroes and share them.

Help people tell their stories.

In the process you would have helped make the world a better place,
you would have gotten to know some more people, and you would have
discovered a few Everyday Heroes. There could be worse ways to spend
the summer.

And PLEASE help spread the word about The EveryDay Heros Project.

Re: [videoblogging] Question on How Do You Do The Blurred Face in a Video

2007-06-26 Thread Brook Hinton
If you're not using a program with a plugin or effect tailored to do this,
the usual process in a basic NLE or effects program is to layer the video on
top of itself, make a matte or mask for the area you want to blur on the top
layer (hopefully your program lets you keyframe the position of the matte to
follow the person's face), then blur the appropriate layer (bottom if the
mask creates a hole for the blurred area, top if it mattes out the unblurred
area). Be sure to feather the mask/matte somehow.

I know nothing about ulead but most programs have free or cheap plugins you
can download - you might do a web search for one that does this in your
program.

[videoblogging] Suggestions of Citizen Journalism Vlogs??

2007-06-26 Thread brian conley
Hi all,

So I'm going to be speaking at Web Video Summit on a panel moderated by JD
Lasica, and I have been trying to come up with a more comprehensive list of
citizen journalism vlogs.

I have been having some trouble with this, and I'm wondering if anyone out
there can suggest some cj vlogs they like, or where I might find a
comprehensive list?

Here are some of the ones I've come up with:

My Urban Report
LiveBait
BuzzMachine
Minnesota Stories
Swajana
Cooking Up a Story
Political Lunch
American Microphone
Verge New Media
GEtv
Alive in Baghdad
Alive in Mexico

Thanks in advance!

Brian
PS I don't know if there is a strict definition of Citizen Journalism. I'm
taking it as anything focusing on reporting stories of real events/real people,
whether in a news or documentary or other format.

If I'm to continue with my vlog, I really need to start making some

Jay

_

If my target of $2,000 is met, I will have the time and resources to
devote myself to editing four new videos. They will be:

1) A photographic journey with a Belfast Photographer displaying the
changes that are occurring in Northern Ireland.

2) A look into the life of legendary Australian Green's Senator, Bob
Brown, and why he chose to live in Tasmania, the location of the
World's first Greens Political Party.

3) An interview with a Video Artist in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

4) A story on the Cave Dwellers of Sacre Monte, Granada, Spain

Anyone who pledges support, will (if they wish) have their details
listed on our Sponsors page. One can also nominate which video they
wish to support.

I have set the minimum pledge amount quite low, if you can afford to
donate more, please feel free to do so.

Hi everyone:

Boy I could sure use a little help.

On my page for The Pat Cook Show (Video Version) @
http://thepctvshow.blogspot.com/ I've got content that just simply
runs off the edge of the sidebar, causing it to be partially chopped
off. I've tried resizing what I can, but some of it simply can't be
resized to fit into the sidebar without being chopped off.

On the page for my audio podcast @ http://thepcradioshow.blogspot.com/
I've got a section for webrings that gets chopped off because of the
way the JavaScript from Webring.com is set up. And the frustrating
part of that is I can't alter the size of that either.

The same thing happens in the main message body area as well, but I
can control that with little to no problem at all. The sidebar
however is a completely different issue altogether.

So, short of either switching hosts or experimenting with the Blogger
templates in an effort to find the right one, what might you guys
suggest I do to fix this problem (BTW I am aware I need to add the RSS
feed to my video page. I will do that as soon as I post this)?

Any help and/or suggestions you can provide would be appreciated :D

Cheers :D

Re: [videoblogging] videos embedded into emails?

If you're able to write the HTML by hand... i.e., write all the tags

 up the test.

The real question is how will e-mail applications and webmail systems handle
 it.

I suspect most of them will block it by default.

I wouldn't think so if it was a Flash video like from YouTube or some
other TRUSTED site.

Although Outlook might not... it seem to be one huge security hole.

Outlook is and always has been a security problem child IN OF
ITSELF, which is I only use it for reading posting to USENET
newsgroups. I *NEVER* use it for email (Even though I have POP access
with Gmail).

Layman's translation - Microsoft needs to take some virtual TNT to it
and simply BLOW IT UP.

So you never know with that. (BTW... there's no such thing ans an
e-mail virus... those things people call e-mail viruses only affect
 Microsoft Outlook!)

See above.

Getting back to the subject at hand, I should think that as long as
it's a Flash-based video from a trusted site such as YouTube, there
really shouldn't be a problem.

Just my opinion though...

Cheers :D

2007-06-26 Thread Bill Streeter
Hey Deirdré,

I don't think a sub $300 cam thats good in low light exists. When
you buy a more expensive camera part of what you are paying for is
better low light performance and all the things that make it
possible (larger ccds, better optics etc). Some of the lower end
Canons and Sonys have pretty good low light performance but they are
priced just above the $300 mark. Check camcorderinfo.com for some
pretty good reviews and sample footage of most of the cameras
available now. They do extensive low light testing too.

PS I don't know if there is a strict definition of Citizen Journalism.
I'm taking it as anything focusing on reporting stories of real events/real

   Dear Ryan,

I saw your video, Lester Sleeps Over, and I thought it was awesome.
Great work! I would love to have your short films on Grouper. My
name is Julianna and I am a member of the Content Team at Grouper
Networks (www.Grouper.com) and our company was recently acquired by
   Sony Pictures Entertainment.
As the online video division of Sony Pictures, Grouper is leading
the next generation of user-generated video production. As part of
that effort, my team is recruiting talented producers like yourself
into our community so that we can present you with several
opportunities in the areas of content and syndication.

A first step in working together is for you to simply sign-up on our
site and upload your work. Once your work is uploaded, shoot me an
email, so I can manually mark it to be featured. Please do not use
any copywritten music/footage in your work as we will not be able to
feature it. iWe have many pathways to future content and we're
   adding more everyday.

The following are the best specs for uploading to our site:
   File type: MOV
   Video Codec: AVC/h.264
   Audio Codec: AAC/48.000 kHz
   OR
   File type: WMV
   Video Codec: WMV9
   Audio Codec: WMA9
   AND
   Bitrate: 800kbps
Framerate: Native frame rate, up to 30fps

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. We'd love
to have you sign on to Grouper and get your content in the spotlight!
Looking forward to hearing from you,

Re: [videoblogging] videos embedded into emails?

2007-06-26 Thread Andrew Darlow
Hi Pat:

This is not exactly an answer, but it is a solution. You could make a
screen shot of the video and have the image linked to your page where
it would be viewable by anyone with a compatible browser. An html e-
mail with an embedded hotlink is probably the safest option.

Hope that helps,

Andrew

For testing... you'd have to create an HTML e-mail, with the proper
embed or applet code in it.

If you're able to write the HTML by hand... i.e., write all the tags
yourself instead of using some WYSIWYG... then should be able to set
  up the test.

The real question is how will e-mail applications and webmail
systems handle it.

Cheers :D
