[videoblogging] Re: Bored
around the 13/11/07 David Howell mentioned about [videoblogging] Re: Bored that: Rather sad when a group that tries to push new media subscribes and restricts itself to old technology like email. well, it is effective :-) (i like email, it comes to me, i can do it offline, i can easily save what i want, I can reply to list or offlist, and you cna thread it if you need to). If this was a forum, there would be post and threads. If there were personal attacks and such, a moderator could delete the post or simply close the thread. That's the beauty of forums. They are moderated. People would never get away with some of the crap that goes on here. If someone slagged someone in one of the Help areas, a moderator would just remove that post. not quite. this list could be moderated. Moderation is moderation and requires a lot of work, whether it is this email list for a forum. Moderation and medium are two different things and are different conversations - if moderation is what is sought then this list could, for example, become moderated. But remember, it takes a lot of work to moderate (a list this busy I'd expect nearly an hour a day of your time if it was one person to skim, approve, reject with explanation). As I said way back when the forum idea was brought up, I prefer forums. My inbox is already full of things that require my attention. I dont really want more email to distract me or clutter up my mind. You say you would never go to a forum yet you visit your inbox all the time? I dont understand that thinking. As Mr Meade said, you could, if you so desired, have everything emailed to you anyways with a forum. that's true, i've never been a fan of forums but my own bias (which it is) is that email is faster, and more productive for getting things happening, etc. it is noisy but that comes with the territory. Of course...if nothing changes, then nothing changes I guess. I didnt start the group and was not involved when the ground rules were laid out and will probably leave the group long before it ceases to exist. For what it's worth, and not like they matter at all, those are only my opinions. and they're good ones :-) reading this list via gmail for example brings it almost to a forum but as I said, I like that I can take it with me. -- cheers Adrian Miles this email is bloggable [ ] ask first [x] private [ ] vogmae.net.au [official compliance stuff:] CRICOS provider code: 00122A
[videoblogging] Re: Bored
Little bekahvoice piping in to add her two-cents. I only ever really post here in moments such as these. These interesting discussions (I use annoying airquotes because not all of them actually ARE interesting...not to me, anyway)that devolve into defensive weirdness and name-calling and mudslinging and text-just-sometimes-doesn't-work-misunderstandings and personal bitchsessions do not bother me. They aren't as entertaining to me as they used to be because I'm trying SO incredibly hard to decrease the snark in my life (my own snark that is. I'm trying to get more sincere as I age so I don't end up crabby and bitter and more wrinkly). However, these out-of-control threads serve to remind me that everyone on this list is human. Human beings saddled with all the faults and foibles that go with not being a chimp. Go to the zoo and check it out. Chimps fling poo. Humans vent on internet message boards. That's why you'll never see (hear/read) me saying take it offlist or go blog it or this has nothing to do with videoblogging. Sure, it has something to do with videoblogging. Not the way *I* videoblog, because in this case I couldn't give a shit about getting 250K viewers fast. If I did, I'd have gone topless long ago. But it matters to some videobloggers whose motives differ from mine. Doesn't make my motivations any purer or better or more sincere. It just is. The fact that the 250KMahalo thread turned into something wholly else only says one thing to me: people care about videoblogging (or their Video Product) so much that they are willing to make total asses of themselves in front of a great deal of people. They are willing to jump clear over the generally accepted social fences that hem them in and go. To. Town. To this I say go for it, kids!. Human beings, remember? That's what we do. We get mad and defensive. Then we take it to the keyboard. That being said, let's revisit my prior point about motivations and all that. I'm not in this because I want to make a career out of it. I could mudsling and name-call 'till I'm blue and I'd have literally nothing to lose. Someone on this thread mentioned that all this silliness was sort of neat and New Media Cool: you won't see Rupert Murdoch having open discussions like this in a public forum (or non-forum, in our case). Well guess what? That's because it's wildly fucking unprofessional! See, I get to swear like that because I have nothing to lose! I'm NOT a professional! Get it? If y'all want to be the kings of New Media (or even the jesters) and usher in a New Age y'all should reflect a little on your behaviour. I mean, is this really how people want to conduct themselves at the dawn of The Big Paradigm Shift? Jesus, I hope not. Transparency is nice, and all, but there's something to be said for rising above it all and being coolly courteous. Don't fling poo like chimps. Or do (do that doo-doo that you do so well). Create a spectacle. Make scandal. It's your name on the line, not mine. Knock yourself out. Bekah -- http://www.missbhavens.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Rupert Howe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yeah, Jay, discussions are one thing, but I'm bored of watching interesting discussions turn into personal slanging matches. It poisons threads and kills discussion. I know some of us seem to like it, and some of us just can't stop watching. There's a familiar discussion on Twitter - people asking themselves why they still subscribe to this list - it's like a car wreck. That saddens me. We all get heated about issues - fine - but if people have got something negative to say about another person, about their motivations or anything that's likely to lead to a personal slanging match, perhaps they could show us the courtesy of having their open and frank discussion on a blog and linking to it here. Maybe that will make this list more 'boring' - but personally, I'm much more bored of watching people going to the toilet on each other when I want to talk about videoblogging. Web-only / Unthreaded. The way the mac touchpad works, it's MUUUCH faster for me to have one page with all of the posts lined up in chronological order. When I come to the messages page, I scroll down until I hit a different-colored link, indicating I've been to that one already, then I scroll back up and use the touchpad to either click in to a post, alt-click to go back or alt-click to open a link in another tab. If I haven't seen any of the posts on the first page, it's one click on the touchpad to see the next page. Also, viewing in-browser is a lot faster for me because with the mail app, I'd have to scroll to the top half of the page, select an email, then scroll back to the bottom half to begin scrolling the actual post. Same thing with resizing. Once I resize the text in-browser, everything I click in to is automatically the same size. I don't have to thread, because when I see a title I don't care about, I visually parse the list as I'm scrolling and pass all the posts with the same length title. -- Bill Cammack http://CammackMediaGroup.com . . . If it's not copy protected I believe mpeg streamclip (it's free - www.squared5.com, and you have to use the www) will let you set an in and and out point in a VOB file and export to format of choice (as long as you have Compressor or the Quicktime mpeg2 component). Every forum (save one very large one) I've participated in that did not include an option to access and interact via email has dwindled away to irrelevance over a short period of time, regardless of member enthusiasm. Email is essential for discussion lists and forums, even if some prefer going directly to a forum interface. Yahoo, for all its quirks, at least offers a dual system. [videoblogging] Need to decide on a format
Hi, My name is Ben, I'm from Sydney Australia and I love animating. I'm currently working on an animated podcast and I would really appreciate your opinion on which formats I should provide. Right now I'm thinking of rendering out a 640x360 version and encoding it as a H264/AAC MP4, then uploading it to Blip.tv where their system will take care of transcoding it to FLV and an iPod compatible M4V, that gets the episode online relatively quickly and with little trouble. Thing is I also want to offer proper HD as an option so after that I'll render out a 1920x1080 version, then scale a copy to 1280x720 before encoding them both to H264/AAC MP4 again and adding them as additional HDTV files on Blip.tv. As you've already noticed I'm planning to stick to widescreen formats, fact is designing for both 4:3 and 16:9 would be a bit of a pain and I'd rather have video's that'll play nice with future video standards that are already being adopted rather than what's currently common. What do you reckon? I am really looking forward to your responses and participating with the community, Thanks!
