[videoblogging] Re: Youtube thumbnail frame
Hi Guys, There is a lot of out dated information in this string. Here are the facts, as of February 2010. 1. You need to be a Youtube Partner to get access to customizable (upload your own) thumbnails. 2. YouTube used to pull it's thumbnails from preset points in the video timeline. Under this method you could insert a still frame right in the middle of your video to customize the thumbnail. This is no longer in use and will not work. 3. YouTubes new method utilizes an algorithm to determine the frame that is most representative of your video. So if 75% of your video is purple then it will choose a purple thumbnail. There is no way to trick this system so don't waste your time. (this info comes straight from the mouths of the people at YouTube). Hope that helps. -Damien

I don't know if this is gonna work but I would do some investigation. A firewire to USB adapter cable. (sorry if this has already been mentioned) Here's a starting point. http://www.pixela-1.com/captycable/ And yes Apple dropping firewire on low end macs blows goats... that's a technical term. That's it! That's my new goal... is to make an episode so filled with brilliance it will make Irina's head explode! I'm comin' for you Irina! The Idea of greenwashing is something that should always be considered when dealing with material that purports to be `good for you'. But if it's any assurance, I will tell you Steve, that I am very aware of the underlying realities of the current corporate greening culture, and there is none of that going on here. We're just 3 people who wanna make a fun eco show. I do appreciate the skepticism though. Sorry Jay, I got that piece of greenwashing mixed up with this one, that carries the same message and is narrated by Reagan. http://www.archive.org/details/Heritage1963 --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Fascinating stuff. I neer saw the Indian campaign before because I am English and born in 75. So the limited good they do is really just a shield to keep certain corporations safe, to keep tougher legislation at bay, to pass the buck to the customer and away from industry. Well, we can look back at more than 50 years of industry draggings its heels on the issues that count, and see just how successful they have been at delaying things. To me it looks like they are able to delay most things by at least a generation, and some things for far longer. I was recently reading about the realities behind the previous largescale earth scare, the CFC ozone layer stuff that often dominated the news when I was growing up. At the time the UK news made it sound like humanity and industry were quite responsive to the problem, but when I look at the actual detail it seems like the corporation who made the CFCs dragged things out for quite a long time, and some bloke had even postulated that such substances could damage the atmosphere before such things were even put into widespread commercial use. The combination of human tendency towards greed, and the ability to harness vast resources of the planet, have made for a lethal combination. I dont think humans will make the needed change on their own, circumstances will force this change if resources start to run low, which common-sense suggests must happen sometime. But is this the story of our time? Its easy to look at the events of this century so far, and to think yes, this may be the high-tide mark for our wasteful societies, but it would also have been feasible to think that in the 70's ad then have watched as decades more passed. Meanwhile the BBC have apparently cancelled a planned event 'planet relief' because it may have breached their 'impartiality guidelines'. Viewing figures for Live Earth were not amazing. People I talk to at work are a bit interested but not too much, and theres rather a large number who dont believe climate change is real. They think its just another excuse for raising taxes, or corporations profiting. I think its got something to do with peak oil myself, whilst at the same time Im sure we are pushing our luck with the planet. Maybe it is a combo of all of these things. Well whatever, I think humans only have the will to accept a modest decrease in lifestyle ease, and the major reductions in consumption that are required will not be a personal lifestyle choice, they will be mandatory due to scarcity. Rupert, I'd really like to know this FCP trick if anybody knows how to do it. I can't seem to figure it out. (G5 FCP 5.1) Damien --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Rupert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Caleb, For what it's worth, I have been importing Canon 640x 480 AVIs into iMovie very quickly, with almost no loss of quality. You have to use the iSight Project setting, though, not the MPEG4. I hear that there's a secret option in the latest version of FCP to sample a clip's exact settings and create a sequence preset, but since I haven't tried it, I can't tell whether it'll do 15fps. Probably not. And as said before, it's also a problem that they're AVIs. For what it's worth, though, the sequence settings sampling thing is only available by ctrl+clicking a clip to get its contextual menu, and I can't remember what the exact title of the menu item is. And if you have the previous version of FCP like I do, it's no good. But it might help somebody - it's a useful feature. [videoblogging] Re: FinalCutPro Settings?
Hi Caleb, In FCP you can tweak out your settings to match your input source (640x480 15fps), but your probably still going to have to render it out because it's .AVI and FCP has no preset for this sort of thing. That's the route I would go, so you don't have to do the weird converting and resizing (640x480 to 720x480 and DV pixels to square pixels). Play around with your sequence presets, you'd be suprised at all the wacky formats you can edit in. Damien --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Michael Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey Caleb, It's not going to happen. This is one place where Windows Movie Maker kicks butt. On a Mac it's best to convert these files to DV for editing. If you are using Final Cut Pro you can create a setting with Compressor to convert things to DV and then make a Droplet (mini application) out of it. That's what I've done. I download my clips from my Xacti into iPhoto and drag the ones I want to edit to my droplet in my dock. Then I get snack while they convert to DV. -Verdi On 1/21/07, Caleb [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh wise videobloggers. I've been shooting stuff on a Canon Elph SD400 at 640/480 at 15fps and it arrives as .avi files. I've tried messing with the settings in FCP to get to that spec, but no luck. It especially doesn't like 15fps in the settings. I can edit it in FCP, but it has to be rendered first (same in iMovie on import) and it think it treats it like 720/29.97fps video from that point on, at least that's what the source window says in Compressor. My wish, my dream, is to simply have Final Cut Pro let me edit my video just as it was shot. 640/15fps. Or 320, etc. It's a dream. Thanks for any help. BTW, love the SD400, very unobtrusive, yet OK video for a still camera. caleb john clark http://lrntv.blip.tv/ -- http://michaelverdi.com http://spinxpress.com http://freevlog.org Author of Secrets Of Videoblogging - http://tinyurl.com/me4vs [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
