Based on my understanding about how Merlin Sound ID works, in my opinion the answer to your question is "no". You are wise to not blindly trust that Merlin Sound ID found a real Cackling Goose in the flock of geese that you had near your house. There are two aspects of how Merlin Sound ID

I live on Canandaigua Lake & we can get flocks of several thousand & in fact a sizable flock was around most of this winter. Seneca Lake can also have decent numbers but neither lake has the incredible numbers Cayuga Lake gets. I’m not sure of numbers on the other Finger Lakes but eBird records

A good sized flock of snow and canada geese at the corner of Perry City and Dubois Rd at 4pm. Both pahses of snow geese there and close to the road. A Harrier flew over my car on Perry City rd just west of Rt 96. Cayuga Dog Rescue has saved more than 475 dogs since 2005. Learn more at
