Bug#476905: gnome-orca: Orca gives a cannot start error now that Python 2.5 is the Debian default in Sid
Package: gnome-orca Version: 2.22.1-1.1 Severity: normal Now that Python 2.5 is the default /usr/bin/python in Sid, Orca gives an error (cannot connect to the desktop) and terminates during startup. The fix is to change the python path specified in the /usr/bin/orca script to refer to Python 2.5: PYTHONPATH=${PYTHONPATH}:${exec_prefix}/lib/python2.5/site-packages With this change, Orca starts up properly. I suppose you could also change the python command in /usr/bin/orca to refer to a particular version of Python instead of whatever the /usr/bin/python symlink refers to. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages gnome-orca depends on: ii libgail-gnome-module 1.20.0-1 GNOME Accessibility Implementation ii libgnome-speech7 1:0.4.18-1 GNOME text-to-speech library ii python2.5.2-1An interactive high-level object-o ii python-brlapi 3.9-7 Python bindings for BrlAPI ii python-glade2 2.12.1-1 GTK+ bindings: Glade support ii python-gnome2 2.22.0-1 Python bindings for the GNOME desk ii python-gtk2 2.12.1-1 Python bindings for the GTK+ widge ii python-pyatspi1.22.1-1 Assistive Technology Service Provi ii python-support0.7.7 automated rebuilding support for P Versions of packages gnome-orca recommends: ii gnome-mag 1:0.14.10-4+b1 a screen magnifier for the GNOME d ii wget 1.11.1-1 retrieves files from the web -- debconf-show failed -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#476909: suggestions on reorganisation of the stardict package.
Package: stardict Severity: normal Hi, Andrew Lee and Anthony Fok! I use stardict, I like this dictionary very much, but there is a great discomfort: at every new installation it is necessary to download the dictionaries from the site http://stardict.sourceforge.net by hand and to install them. It would be nice if the deb-package included the dictionaries from this site, however it is most likely impossible because mostly they will not correspond to DFSG. I have a proposal to you: to modify the package thus it has configure and template scripts for debconf, which would allow users to choose and install the dictionaries automatically (dpkg-reconfigure). I've written a small script (it is attached) which creates a list of what to download and where from: according to the results of the work of this script one may generate the menu for choosing). Some time later I would be able to complete the work on this system [1]. However now I have to choose whether to make a fake package only for automatisation of downloading the dictionaries for stardict or to work further on the stardict package. Here I need your agreement or disagreement about working on the stardict package: in the first case you'll include the results of my work into package and add me to the Uploaders group and in the second one I'll make a retitle of this bug in ITP: staridct-dicts [1]. Bug#473175: apt-listbugs: pinned packages are not automatically unpinned
Hi, Again assuming that the above is correct, I don't think that this logic is appropriate for aptcleanup. That is to say, I don't think that waiting for the pinned package to be non-RC-buggy before unpinning it is the right thing to do. The reason is: when I ask apt-listbugs to pin a package for me, I do so because the new version that would otherwise be installed is affected by some bugs that I think would have an unacceptable impact on my system. From now on, I will call these bugs the bugs that I fear. The bugs that I fear are automatically annotated by apt-listbugs in /etc/apt/preferences in Explanation: fields. When the bugs that I fear go away (either because they have been downgraded below the RC threshold, or because they have been fixed in a newly available version of the package, or because they have been reassigned to another package), the previously pinned package should be unpinned, *even if* there are other new RC-bugs that affect the newly available version. If there are no other RC-bugs that affect the newly available version of the package, the package will be upgraded during the next aptitude safe-upgrade run. On the other hand, if there are other RC-bugs, the package will be ready to be upgraded during the next aptitude safe-upgrade run and apt-listbugs will kick in alerting the user about the new RC-bugs: the user will examine those new RC-bugs and decide whether to pin the package again or else let the upgrade happen. This seems the right behavior to me. aptcleanup should only care about the bugs that I fear, when deciding whether to unpin a package. How can this be achieved? I think the design of aptcleanup could be changed as follows. 0) parse /etc/apt/preferences, reading pinned packages and the bugs that explain their pinning (bugs that the user fear) 1) for each pinned package 1.1) determine the unpinned_candidate_version (that is to say, the version that would be installed if the pinning were removed) 1.2) for each bug that the user fears 1.2.1) query the BTS about the bug and find out whether the bug is still present *and* still RC in the unpinned_candidate_version 1.3) if all the bugs that the user fears went away, then the package should be unpinned, hence do not include it in the list of buggy packages 1.4) if on the other hand some bugs that the user fears haven't yet gone away, then the package should stay pinned, hence include it in the list of buggy packages 2) compare the list of pinned packages with the list of buggy packages and spit out a new preferences file which only pins buggy packages How do I determine the unpinned_candidate_version of PACKAGE? Something like the following, I would say: $ apt-cache -o Dir::Etc::Preferences=/dev/null policy PACKAGE | awk '/Candidate:/ { print $2; }' Well, what do you think about my proposed redesign of aptcleanup? Is it reasonable? Is it feasible? Or am I missing something important? Your logic sounds reasonable, patch is welcome. It's going to be a major rewrite since aptcleanup currently is a very simple script. regards, junichi -- [EMAIL PROTECTED],netfort.gr.jp} Debian Project -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I cannot get any wlan information, like iwlist scanning, afterwards, so it might be a problem with the iwl3945 driver, since I have used ipw3945 before. On my iBook I have to reconfigure the b43 wlan driver with ifup/ifdown after suspending, too. I use a similar configuration. iwl3945, some nfs4 mounts, suspend to ram and suspend to disk. Bug#475626: libnss-ldapd: Change to start level of nslcd

This mean for a period of time no ldap users are valid with regards to exim. I have seen bounced emails because of this. I was going to suggest 19 but it seems like slapd starts there and I would like to give slapd a chance to start before nscld starts because by backup (alternative URI's) are on a different site Starting nslcd before slapd can be done but is generally not a good idea because it will slow down the boot process due to problems connecting to the LDAP server. If nslcd knows that the LDAP server is down this could also cause problems for subsequent lookups in a certain time period until nslcd is aware that the LDAP server is available again. This means that sequence 19 may cause problems and 20 currently causes problems for exim. yep, I have moved slapd done to 18, 19 for nslcd. I am in the process of rethinking/rewriting the reconnect logic in nss-ldapd which could make it easier to start earlier. If i might suggest the ability to add a weight to each uri thus if would be possible to priorities slapd servers -- -- arthur - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://people.debian.org/~adejong -- -- Dave Mack: Your stupidity, Allen, is simply not up to par. Bug#476922: [desktop-file-utils] desktop-file-validate: option --warn-kde is useless and other issues
Package: desktop-file-utils Version: 0.15-1 Severity: normal Hello, Desktop-file-validate warns about reserved keys or values for KDE in the Desktop Entry group regardless if the --warn-kde option is given or not. One would assume that these warnings are suppressed if desktop-file-validate is invoked without the --warn-kde option. It also complains about groups which begin with PropertyDef::, for example: error: file contains group PropertyDef::X-KDE-Name, but groups extending the format should start with X- But this extension is used by (at least) KDE3 service types, see: http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Development/Architecture/KDE3/Services Maybe desktop-file-validate should also suppress these errors unless the --warn-kde option is given. Another issue is that desktop-file-validate does not complain about commas used as separators in lists (in the latest Desktop Entry Specification the use of commas as separator is marked as deprecated in favor of semicolons). Bug#475524: Possibly not a problem
I reread the docs and it seems maxdumpsize controls what the planner does not the dumper. That means if the estimate is smaller than actual size of the dump you can run out of tape (as I have), and it may not be an error as such. So the -1 might be working. I've had this problem of small estimates so it's not clearly wrong to use -1 in my case. -- And that's my crabbing done for the day. The first way is to multiplex output to zero or more output handles. The IO::Tee constructor, given a list of output handles, returns a tied handle that can be written to. When written to (using print or printf), the IO::Tee object multiplexes the output to the list of handles originally passed to the constructor. As a shortcut, you can also directly pass a string or an array reference to the constructor, in which case IO::File::new is called for you with the specified argument or arguments. . The second way is to multiplex input from one input handle to zero or more output handles as it is being read. The IO::Tee constructor, given an input handle followed by a list of output handles, returns a tied handle that can be read from as well as written to. When written to, the IO::Tee object multiplexes the output to all handles passed to the constructor, as described in the previous paragraph. When read from, the IO::Tee object reads from the input handle given as the first argument to the IO::Tee constructor, then writes any data read to the output handles given as the remaining arguments to the constructor. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-5-xen-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#474630: new python-twisted-core breaks plugin packages using python-support
reassign 474630 python-twisted-core thanks Le mercredi 16 avril 2008 à 19:57 +0200, Vincent Bernat a écrit : OoO Peu avant le début de l'après-midi du mardi 15 avril 2008, vers 13:18, Matthias Klose [EMAIL PROTECTED] disait: this is not a bug in python-twisted-core; it is known that the installation of modules/plugins in two different directories in sys.path breaks things. python-nevow must install in the same location as python-twisted-core. I don't really see the relation between the new behavior of twisted of not searching plugins in directories containing __init__.py and the fact that multiple modules providing plugins may break things. Moreover, your proposed fix will just break more things since python-support will add __init__.py file into the target directory. I could fix this bug easily in python-nevow by removing this __init__.py file in postinst. Please don’t do that. It will be re-added later. However, Sam seems to report a more general problem. Fixing it in python-nevow won't solve it. If we don't fix it in twisted, we could fix it in python-support. I don't really understand why python-support adds __init__.py files. The code says that otherwise, python will not take care of package inside those directories. I don't find a case where a package is shipped as a package without __init__.py. There are already several packages relying on the namespace packages feature. The problem is when you have two modules, named foo.bar and foo.baz, shipped in two different packages. If each of them shipped foo/__init__.py, they couldn’t be installed together, and this is why the empty __init__.py needs to be generated automaticaly. Josselin, any hint on this problem? I assign this bug to python-support. If you don't agree, feel free to reassign it to python-nevow, I know how to fix it for python-nevow. We’ve already discussed the issue on IRC before sam reported the bug, and I still think the bug lies in python-twisted. Shipping modules in the site-packages directory without making them available to the user through 'import' is a clear abuse of the python API. Of course it is possible to work around that bug in python-support by adding a specific exception for python-twisted, but this is a last-resort measure, and I don’t want to do this when it is so easy to fix twisted, by removing the __init__.py check that was recently added by upstream. Actually the problem is now gone. Unfortunately I was not careful to record the order of steps taken, but here goes: I looked at the logs and noticed exim4 (MTA) has not starting up properly, so did dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config, which fixed that. I disabled acpid (But I think I this this before with no difference). I also purged and reinstalled portmap as that was unresponsesive to stop and restart commands. At the end I installed kde-core in the hope that KDE would fare better. After this I tried to log out of Gnome to start a KDE session, only to dicover the logout now works. It been a weird experience, but at the time I experience the issue the system was 'clean'. I did a standard install from etch CD1 only (base + desktop environment tasks). upgraded to testing and then sid. during the upgrade apt had to remove gnome-desktop-environment to fulfill dependencies (also I had to force glibc in manually with dpkg). after the system was completely on sid I installed gnome-desktop-environment back and had could not logout after restarting into a gnome session. No configuration changes of happened during the process. Anyway thanks for your help.

Bug#476571: reproduced
I've managed to reproduce this on the “outside world”. You can test using: https://svn.grabeuh.com/svn/training then add something in trunk/ and try to commit. It segfaults in ne_uri_resolve(). I've not rebuilt a not-optimized package so the backtrace is not yet usable, but as you may reproduce it yourself, it may be not useful. Please ask if you need it anyway. Bug#206572: screen: -ls should list sessons sorted chronologically
Hi Ben, Doesn't the ctime value from fstat(2) give the time the session was created? That seems like a more useful criterion. all three timestamps are modified by detach/attach. Writing messages to the fifo changes mtime and ctime (the latter being quite strange), receiving changes atime, and toggling the u+x mode bit (to record the Session Attached/Detached state) changes ctime as well. screen even calls utimes() to prevent the socket files from deletion by tempreaper tools, but it doesn't help disabling it due to the above reasons. Bug#476941: f-spot works at a crawl - at 100% cpu
Package: f-spot Version: 0.4.2-1 Severity: important f-spot is extremely slow. I have some 42000 photos imported, from 1998 to today, and just moving from one photo to the next by clicking or by the keyboard, takes 1-2 seconds. Adding a tag to a group of photos take 1-2 seconds per photo, which isn't fun if you're tagging a thousand. The application is rendered useless by this slowness. I've used f-spot before with several thousands photos, without any such problems. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the whole mono framework, but to no avail. I have tried both the testing and the unstable framework. This is a fairly fast laptop, with a core duo cpu and 2Gb of memory. Doing the same operations directly in sqlite3 finishes in an instant. Bug#476803: Debconf use is utterly broken
Hi Vincent, Thanks for your really quick reply. Thanks for your report. I have used a clean sid chroot to do those tests. Bug#342632: Various fixes for emacs php mode
Hi Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the patch. I'll apply it when I know that it applies to any updates from upstream. Best regards, // Ola On Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 11:22:34PM +0100, Thue Janus Kristensen wrote: I played around with the emacs php mode, and made a few fixes to what on my system is /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/php-elisp/php-mode.el I made the fixes against the latest version 1.4 from sourceforge, but I think they would be easy to apply to the version 1.1 currently in Debian unstable. The fixes are: 1) Add support for the clone keyword, by copying the existing code for the print keyword. Both these keywords get special treatment as they can be used boat as print 'lala' and print('lala') (Debian bug #342632) 2) Add support for highlighting the object name to the right of instanceof keyword, as in $student instanceof Person, by using the existing logic for for example the new keyword. (Debian bug #342634) 3) Make sure that keywords, for example if, don't become highlighed in $lala_if. This is done by inserting a few [^_]'s in the source code. For start of line I had to insert \\(?:^\\|[^_]\\) (non-underscore or start of line), otherwise emacs would not always mark up keywords at the start of the line (specifically emacs would mark up correctly if the keyword was there when the file was loaded, but not when the keyword was freshly written). (Debian bug #212422) Bug 3) looks somewhat like a bug which could be more elegantly fixed at a higher level in emacs, but my band-aid fix could serve in the mean-time. I tested using GNU Emacs 21.4.1. Here is some PHP code which illustrates the highlighting bugs: ?php $aa_if; $aa_if_aa; $aa_break; $aa_break_aa; $aa_print_aa; $aa_class_aa; $aa_class; $aa_self; $a_private; $a_continue; //this one is not fixed function if_a() {} function a_if() {} function private_aa() {} function continue_aa() {} class Person {} $aa instanceof Person; clone $aa; ? Bug#476176: autodia: autodia_java depends on INLINE::Java
Hi, Javier Serrano Polo wrote: INLINE::Java isn't available in Debian. It's fairly easy to package though (of course, if you know how to make packages). Autodia would need additional fixes however. Because there're better alternatives to package (e.g., UMLGraph) I suggest to simply disable the java part. Thanks for the report. However, I will probably add a release note that until INLINE::Java is available in Debian, we can't support autodia_java. This is because at the point when it eventually is available, we don't need to fix autodia again. People who have INLINE::Java installed manually can already use autodia_java. Bug#476946: Preseeding and priorities
As shown in the above report, in my case roundcube fails to configure, because it seems to ignore the preseeded values. In fact, it is dbconfig-common that ignores these values. This seems to be related to the priority of the question being too low, as I need to run dpkg-reconfigure -p low roundcube-core to get around to all the questions, in which case configuration finally succeeds. If I omit the -p low, I don't get asked the questions (that might be ok), and defaults are used instead (which is not ok, as I had provided the answers via preseeding). Bug#476876: xserver-xorg-video-s3: S3 server crash/lockup with S3 Trio 64+
The Alpha BIOS itself doesn't enable or disable anything, so I'm not sure what I could do there. I'm not really sure what [disabled] means in the lspci output anyway. It also reports that the SCSI controller BIOS is disabled, but that is working fine. I have kept Etch up to date, but only with the stable configuration. The Xorg server shows a compile date in January of 2008, which really doesn't seem that old, but I suppose I might be able to install something from the testing or unstable packages. I tried switching to a different video card, ELSA Gloria L, that has an S3ViRGE chip, but that gives similar results, even though it seems to want the s3virge driver or possibly the glint (it has two 3DLabs coprocessors on it.) The ELSA card works with Windows NT on this box, but not with OpenVMS so I swapped back to the S3 Trio. Is there anything to configure in the Alpha BIOS or whatever to help this? Can something more recent than Etch? The S3 driver is been a bit updated since Etch, and the Xserver is much more recent. Bug#463783: The problem solved.
Hello. Firstof all, I want to note that the problem was not only with apache. For example MPC also didn't work correctly, so if eth0 wasn't been configured it fault saying that cannot find localhost. I don't know what was the problem, but after my last dist-upgrade (about one week ago) everything corrected, so now everything works perfect.

Bug#472350: [Buildd-tools-devel] Bug#472350: sbuild: Add support for running apt-get update before a build
tags 472350 + fixed-upstream pending thanks Timothy G Abbott [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I would find it useful to have an option in sbuild that automatically runs apt-get update in the build chroot immediately prior to building, which ensures the build gets the newest dependencies, even if one has not done an apt update in the source chroot recently. I've attached a patch to implement this feature. Many thanks. I have applied the patch with a couple of minor modifications (error handling and config file update). Bug#476950: Confusing tooltip
Package: tsclient Version: 0.150-1 Severity: minor Forwarded report from Ubuntu (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tsclient/+bug/82085) from kvdb: I tried using tsclient for managing a few vnc connections. The GUI is so confusing, I'd call it a bug. In the General tab in the field Username (which tightvnc doesn't use anyway), the tooltip says: Enter the username for the remote system. For vnc, enter the path to your saved vnc password file. Ok, I created a password file using vncpasswd. But on connecting, it wouldn't be picked up. After experimenting some more, it seems that putting the filename in the field called Protocol file does work. The tooltip says Some protocols require a file containing settings. If required, enter the path to the file here. The tooltip under both Username and Protocol file should be corrected.
