Bug#573784: pius and caff from signing-party

2010-03-20 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Hi Luke--

On 03/19/2010 09:21 PM, Luke Cycon wrote:
 A) PIUS allows you to loop through all keys on a keyring, asking if you
want to sign each one. If yes, it invokes the gpg command to do so.

nice; so as a user, you don't need to write out all the key ids by hand.

 B) PIUS *seems* to be more configurable in respect to the way it sends
mail. I have not looked at caff's mail config in great depth, but from
what I have seen, this is true.

looking in caff(1) i see that caff has a mailer-send parameter, with an
example suggesting that you can send it through a preferred SMTP server
(even one that requires user name and password), but it says setting
this option is strongly discouraged. Fix your local MTA instead

thanks for prompting me to look this up, i didn't know about it before.

I know this may be a small difference, but having used both tools, I
prefer PIUS (no offense to caff's authors) for signing keys after a
party. I would like to see the package accepted just so that there is a
choice the users can make. That said, I am open to counter-arguments.

you certainly won't find any argument from me against pius making it
into the archive on the grounds that caff already does the same thing.
As i said before, i'm happy to see some friendly competition in this
application space.

Thanks for your work for debian,

Are you still interested in packaging pino?

I used same severity as is used for piuparts discoveries of packages
leaving behind files after purge.

No, that was not justification, and frankly I was unable to locate any
cleanup reuirements at all in Debian Policy, so I guess that you are
free to treat such sanity as wishlist only.

| ssl-cert adds a group at install which is not removed again at purge.

Yes, this is normal behaviour, and I think it's wanted behaviour in this
case as you'll quite easily end up with files not owned by a named group

True, if we unconditionally remove the group.

What I suggest is to remove it if unused, which I believe does not lead
to the described problem.

| purge is nondeterministic, other packages cannot reliably cleanup the
| group if they are purged last.

Order of install is determined by dependency fields, quite
deterministic, I'd say.

Ok, you are right that the use of Pre-Depends ensures install order.
Depends does not. Pre-Depends is generally discouraged, however.

Common package managers like aptitude try hard to also order by Depends
but that is not guaranteed, I believe.

| Problem discovered during resolving of bug#574214.

This seems to be a missing depends on the group or failing to add the
group if it does not exist already, not in any way related to whether
ssl-cert removes the group on purge.

A missing Pre-Depends on ssl-cert would indeed solve that bug, yes.
Pre-Depends are generally discouraged, however, and there is a better
approach here - which is why I filed this other bugreport.

Only adding to the group if the group existed would also solve that bug
(without strong dependency on ssl-cert: the package works fine without
ssl-cert installed), but then there is the problem of non-deterministic
install order.

What I did was to create the group if it did not exist already. I
dislike this, however, as the package then second-guess parts of the
functionality of ssl-cert which might change in the future (and if it
changes then quite likely ssl-cert only cleans up conditionally if
*upgrading* from an earlier version, not if freshly installed - which
would then cause problems if other packages have second-guessed old
behaviour of ssl-cert).

Kind regards,

 - Jonas

Bug#574544: [afflib] contains files released under a non-free license

2010-03-20 Thread Christophe Monniez
Here is the answer of the upstream author about this problem:

Those files are public domain, which means that they are distributed
without a license. This is the least restrictive way of distributing
content on the planet. You can do anything you want with that.

You are correct, however. The last sentence is not in the spirit of the
PD. This verbiage is from NIST and it is clearly not legal. We will
remove it from the next release.

So, I will close this bug when packaging the next release (I will skip
the current 3.5.8).

Untill then, I'm not sure of what to do and what is the Debian way to
handle this problem.

hlibrary.mk would not work with older versions of dh_haskell* scripts,
 and vice-versa.
(...)
I feel it best to maintain CDBS snippets as part of the cdbs package
itself, so that the coding style can most easily be kept in sync across
 snippets.

It's a good point.

The cdbs package is maintained in the collab-maint group at Alioth which
means all Debian developers already have write access and anyone else
can request membership of the group as well - just mention your reason
for needing such membership when requesting it: for helping co-maintain
 cdbs.

Would it be possible to make a CDBS release immediately when I, for instance,
want a change in the haskell snippet to be in the archive, to make it sync with
the new release of the dh_haskell* scripts? I'm assuming you're not saying I
should include the dh_haskell* scripts in the CDBS package.

If this is possible, I see no problem in moving hlibrary.mk to the cdbs
package.

If Haskell is too fast-moving for maintainance with cdbs, then it might
make sense to separate tiny parts into something shipped with the Haskel
tools - similar to how Python ships their competing python-central and
puthon-module tools, which several CDBS snippets then make use of
 through a commandline interface.

Are you talking here about Makefiles or dh_* kind of scripts?

Haskell is not too fast moving, but when there's a change needed, we often need
it to be applied and released immediately, since there are libraries waiting
to be uploaded.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Bug#574544: [afflib] contains files released under a non-free license

* Christophe Monniez christophe.monn...@fccu.be [Sat Mar 20, 2010 at

Great, thanks for taking care, Christophe.

Untill then, I'm not sure of what to do and what is the Debian way to
 handle this problem.

I'm marking this bug as pending to show that we're aware of this
issue and it will be fixed with next upload.

Don't forget to run update-texmf as root.

Never mind, I will work with upstream directly.

As soon as the stable VDR 1.8 is out, we will push it to Debian.

Sure. New releases are done as needed - there are no release cycle to
care about or something.

The only thing I can think of is if - as have been the case the last
weeks - we already have some changes in the pipeline that we want to
reach testing before we do another release. In other words: if you want
a cdbs release with less than 10 days delay then better warn 10 days
ahead. But that really is a corner case, and I doubt in reality we
would be inflexible if such clash of interest really occured :-)

I'm assuming you're not saying I should include the dh_haskell* scripts
in the CDBS package.

Correct. You'd have to discuss with Joey if he feels similar about addon
debhelper modules. And if you do, I am curious about his response - he
is a wise guy and even if we disagree on design principles (I dislike
how short-form dh7 reinvents make, and he dislikes all of cdbs, I
guess), I am sure we can learn from his viewpoints :-)

If this is possible, I see no problem in moving hlibrary.mk to the cdbs
package.

Haskell is not too fast moving, but when there's a change needed, we
often need it to be applied and released immediately, since there are

What python-central and python-module does is provide a shell script
belo /usr/sbin that can be queried about things like which is the
default Python version on the currently running system and which are
the possible Python versions currently on this distribution.

I imagine both debhelper dh_* modules and CDBS *.mk snippets can then
query that shell script to ideally only need to maintain that one script
when Python packages are upgraded - and only if Python _policy_ changes
does the modules/snippets need to be restructured.

Does that make sense?

Perhaps if you elaborate on the kind of changes you can envision will be
needed for Haskell, we can try help come up with a good separation ot
tools.

Kind regards,

 - Jonas

But so far there is neither a downloadable Trac 0.12 source

Trac 0.12 seems to need Genshi trunk, while Debian has the
latest official release 0.5.1. We have to wait until Genshi 0.6

quality of the Trac 0.12 package would be qustionable without

Bug#573753: kde-standard: Desktop effects suspended when member of staff

2010-03-20 Thread Falkon Falkon

Hi Eckhart,

I can confirm that the behavior matches that bug.

Setting DisableChecks=true seems to work as well. (five or six consecutive
logins without issues)

If I'm reading the Debian version right, I'm running KDE 4.3.1
(Debian squeeze/testing x86 package kde-standard, fully up to date.)

I'm also using the Xorg (1.7.5) radeon driver with EXA acceleration mode and
use KDM to log in.

I'm not certain if it is related, but I'm using grub2 with GFX mode
1400x1050x32 (My laptop's native resolution) and gfx payload = keep (To keep
that resolution in my console as well)
Kernel mode setting is not enabled.

Let me know if you need me to run some tests or provided some additional info.

Regards,

Maarten

How do you know the delete fails?

The appointments remain on the list, unchanged.

Does the deleted record has a different color after you delete it?

No, there's no change at all.

Is the deleted record still present after a sync with the Palm?

Yes, unchanged.

What PDA do you have? Model and system version.

What is the output of:
$ grep version ~/.jpilot/jpilot.rc

I believe that file only gets created if you have the install-info

This feature is still absent, and still desirable (to me, at least).
Are the maintainers waiting for a patch to be submitted?

Yes, this would be a very valid option to get the feature in -
apt-ftparchive doesn't have a maintainer currently who takes
care of features and/or bugs and is therefore in (very) low
maintenance mode, but if you have a patch and/or you
are willing to write one i will try to help you as much as possible
to get it into the official version. Features like the recently added
--arch option (in experimental) are the best example for it…

Best regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

David Kalnischkies

Thank you. I've added this to my copious free time todo list, but
as it's a low-priority issue for me, I don't expect to address it
anytime soon.

Bug#500712: problem is not reproducible anymore, fixed?

Hi Christian,

Christian Kastner wrote, on 20-03-10 03:44:

I tested the boot process with three different zd1211 devices and the
boot process did not slow down as much as it did. See the attached
document for more information. I believe the problem has been fixed
somewhere. (any idea where?)

Thanks in advance,

Bug#574705: glest: Unable to select units and structures with mouse

2010-03-20 Thread Davide Prina

Package: glest
Version: 3.2.2-2
Severity: important

Since some days I can use 3D application with my graphics card (ATI
Technologies Inc RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650]).

When the Glest game is started the mouse left click is unable to select
units and structures.

If I start the game with:
$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 glest

all work (slowly) correctly

I have try others 3D applications/games and I don't found a similar problem.

Let me know if I can do something to give you more information.

Ciao

Bug#574708: libpam-ssh: Interact badly with cron, nagios and munin?

2010-03-20 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: libpam-ssh
Version: 1.92-10
Severity: important

I ran into a problem with Debian Edu based on squeeze, where the
libpam-ssh package is installed automatically. We also install
several cron jobs, nagios and munin. The problem I ran into was that
cron processes did not exit, and the system ran out of file
descriptors and memory. Were not able to debug in properly, as I had
2600 cron processes and all swap was used. Ended up using 'killall
cron' to get the machine limping along. After killing all these cron
processes, I noticed pstree reporting ~400 ssh-agent processes. The
only source I could thing of for these processes is the libpam-ssh
package, so I have purged it from the system and hope to not
experience the same problem again.

Perhaps it is a good idea to check how libpam-ssh work with cron jobs?

Happy hacking,

Bug#574709: RM: kmymoney2-plugin-aqbanking -- ROM; obsolete and FTBFS

2010-03-20 Thread Micha Lenk
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi archive team,

the package kmymoney2-plugin-aqbanking has been obsoleted by kmymoney 3.96.1-1
uploaded to unstable yesterday. The plugin libraries contained in the package
kmymoney2-plugin-aqbanking are now part of the package kmymoney, so there is no
need for a separate package anymore.

For upgrades from Debian Lenny to Squeeze the package kmymoney contains
Conflicts and Replaces dependencies that should indicate to the package
management that kmymoney2-plugin-aqbanking is to be removed on upgrade of
kmymoney.

Regards
  Micha

After last upgrade in sid, dbus segaults when interacting with
network-manager. An excerpt form my syslog is attached.

Is this the only occasion where dbus-daemon segfaults? What are the exact steps
you are doing?

Note that after the segfault I'm unable to run any application relying
on hal (not even restarting dbus and then hal works). I'm sure this
started few days ago just after un upgrade that involved dbus while it
 was very stable before.

Please downgrade to the dbus packages from testing (dbus, dbus-x11,
libdbus-1-3), to verify that it is a regression in 1.2.22.

If the crash in the dbus system bus is reliably reproducible, I'd be very
interested in a backtrace [1]

Thanks,
Michael

Bug#567582: boot failure: the symbol 'grub_env_find' not found

2010-03-20 Thread Andrey Nikitin
Hi, I confirm this problem.

I have received precisely same error after upgrade to version 1.98-1 (I
do not remember from what version).

At grub-pc configure there were errors (grub-probe).
Then I (by grup-pc recommendation) have executed update-grub and
rebooted the system.

I have restored system booting only by downgrade to version

Bug#574710: education-common: Should not install and enable libpam-ssh by default

2010-03-20 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: education-common
Version: 0.844
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertag: debian-edu

As reported in bug #574708, I believe libpam-ssh causes problems with
cron. And given the fact that Debian Edu never have enabled this
module and do not really need it, I believe we should reduce its
depend on ignore (or perhaps even drop it?) in the common task to
avoid the problem.

The problem only show up in squeeze/testing, because pam configuration
is not set up automatically based on information provided by the
libpam* packages. This enable libpam-ssh and exposes us to its
behavior.

This patch reduces it from depends to ignore.

Dropping it sounds sensible to me. Why install it, if we dont use it and if it
needs configuration anyway. It's only an apt-get call away anyway :)

Bug#573272: transition: ruby1.9 - ruby1.9.1

2010-03-20 Thread Marc 'HE' Brockschmidt
Lucas Nussbaum lu...@lucas-nussbaum.net writes:
 What needs to happen is:
 - remove the ruby1.9 source package from testing.
 - make sure all the library packages have been transitioned and migrated
   to testing.

This has not happened yet. I think you should file an explicit rc bug
against ruby1.9 indicating that it needs to be removed, this absolutely
ensures that it will happen before the release.

How do you want to proceed?

I could provide migration hints for those packages, so we don't have to wait
for the 10 days delay, and also a removal hint for ruby1.9.

I don't think we are at that point already, but there's also nothing the
release team can do in the meantime. So I guess you should just continue
your work :-)

 seem OK to you?
Erm. I'm very reluctant to filing bugs that can't easily be reproduced
in unstable. At this point, you need a custom mpi-defaults package to
reproduce them. Also, it is possible that some of them will not be
fixable before the new mpi-defaults is in unstable (= you can't upload a
fixed package that works if the new mpi-defaults isn't in unstable).
I'm with Lucas here. If we file the bugs before the upload, we should be
very explicit about the fact that it does not concern unstable yet. As a
compromise, we could prepare patches, upload mpi-defaults and file the
bugs with the respective patches. (Or most of them, did not check how
 complex the changes are.)

That would be great. The point is that transitions suck most once they
are half-started and preparing as much as possible helps to keep the
sucking phase short.

This would enable to fix these in a timely fashion. I could start
doing that tomorrow night. How does that sound to you?

Sounds good. Sorry for my delayed answer :-/

As for user-tagging, we can use the old-mpi-eol usertag.

Sounds good, though I don't know for which user - feel free to use

The debian packaging guide says you can do it both ways and there
doesn't seem to be a consensus on the right way. I'm going to leave it
 as is.

You can do it both ways, but which way you should choose depends on the
context. If there is no compelling reason not to have a generic -dev
package (e.g. API changes), you shouldn't use one.

Bug#574717: mingw32-ocaml: Supported arches

2010-03-20 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Package: mingw32-ocaml
Version: 3.11.2+debian4

Hi,

It seems you currently restrict the arch list to:
i386 amd64 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386

Is there a reason for this? Both mingw32 and ocaml seem to be
supported on all arches (except for mingw32 on hurd-i386).

I also don't get why you need to build-depend on gcc-multilib.
You have this in your rules file:
# Note that we must build a 32 bit compiler, even on 64 bit build
# architectures, because this compiler will try to do strength
# reduction optimizations using its internal int type, and that must
# match Windows' int type. (That's what -cc and -host are for).

But the size of an int doesn't change for 32 and 64 targets. Only the size
of a long and a pointer do.

The description even says:
 This compiler runs quickly,
generates compact code with moderate memory requirements, and is
portable to essentially any 32 or 64 bit Unix platform.

I currently see no reason not to set the arch list to any.

Bug#574718: mingw32-ocaml: embedded code of other packages.

2010-03-20 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Package: mingw32-ocaml
Version: 3.11.2+debian4

Hi,

It seems your source tree contains those tarballs:
findlib-1.2.5+debian.tar.gz
flexdll-0.11.tar.gz
ocaml-3.11.2.tar.gz

Atleast findlib-1.2.5 and ocaml-3.11.2 are part of Debian. I
understand that you might need source of those packages. But
it would be much nicer if you could solve this with build-depends.

I suggest that you ask for a ocaml-source package, like it for
instance exists for gcc-4.4-source and various other packages.

libpam-ssh do not need configuraiton. It simply kick into action for
users with ssh keys present. :)

What does it do? From the description I dont get it:

Description: enable SSO behavior for ssh and pam
This PAM module provides single sign-on behavior for UNIX using SSH.
Users are authenticated by decrypting their SSH private keys with the
password provided (probably to XDM). In the PAM session phase, an
ssh-agent process is started and keys are added.

Users are authenticated by decrypting their SSH private keys with the
password provided (probably to XDM). - what???

I believe the description suffers from buzzword overdose (single sign on
sounds fancy, but is actually something else/more than this), bad english (I
guess it shall read On authentication, existing ssh private keys are
unlocked with the password supplied to login and added to ssh-agent or such)
and in-accurancy (_probably_ to XDM - it should list which DMs are
supported for real.)

(Does my reading of the description sound correct? If so, I will file a
bugreport with suggestions for better wordings...)

Also I think such a pam module is bad idea as it is a bad idea, to use the
login password to protect ssh keys with.

IMO we dont loose anything if we drop it from our radar.

cheers,
Holger

Bug#574710: education-common: Should not install and enable libpam-ssh by default

2010-03-20 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Holger Levsen]
Also I think such a pam module is bad idea as it is a bad idea, to
use the login password to protect ssh keys with.

It work the other way around, where it allow you to log in using the
ssh key password (and ignore the password in /etc/shadow/LDAP/NIS).

IMO we dont loose anything if we drop it from our radar.

No problem for me. I belive it was added when we believed it would
start ssh-agent when the user logged in. This is not done by this pam
module, and we do not need libpam-ssh to get that behaviour. :)

Happy hacking,

Bug#574721: edos-distcheck: Please don't consider (versioned?) build-essential packages always installable

2010-03-20 Thread Bradley Smith
Package: edos-distcheck
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Please could (at least versioned) build dependencies on build-essential
package not always be considered installable? The situation this is a
nuisance in, is for the avr32 port on debian-ports. The avr32 port still
only has libc 2.5, so every package that depends on locales or libc =
2.{9,10} (of which there are now quite a few), slip straight through edos'
net, meaning I have to continually manually mark them as failed until the
dependency can be satisfied.

It may be an idea to extend this to not mark /any/ build-essential as
installable, since in the case of debian-ports, these packages may well
have not been built yet.

How this relates to #545381, I'm not sure.

Thanks.

Regards,
Bradley Smith

It is weird but looks like a networking setup issue to me rather than a

network interface isn't really up yet or a switch or similar is broken.

Although this isn't a libvirt issue we should try to find out what
happens. Can you try to hook a bridge between your eth1 and the network
switch and see if the arp request leaves your host at all? Maybe you can
also use the switches diagnostic software.

What kind of iSCSI target is this? Might it fail to generate the arp
reply in time?

Bug#569691: still present with latest 2.6.32 kernel

It looks like the 2.6.32.10 package fixes the problems I was having with
the video drivers, so I guess we can forget this bug now. I am also seeing
the iwlagn flood you noticed, but it looks like that's being dealt with.

Bug#574726: RM: haddock/experimental -- ROM; already removed from unstable

Hi,

haddock was already removed from unstable, and I guess it should be
removed from experimental again.

We might introduce the haddock source package again soon (in unstable),
but to provide the embedded library, not the binary that is now provided
by ghc6.

Greetings,
Joachim

 Hi
I'd be nice to have a newer gdm (maybe in expermental) since these
versions handle interaction with plymouth (which currently also lives in
experimental). Are there plans to include a newer gdm in squeeze?

Yes, but currently it doesn’t work (keyboard is always US), see my
previous reply in this bug report.

Everything is in the SVN, so feel free to have a look.

Bug#564464: more information on bell pitch

2010-03-20 Thread Jay Berkenbilt

There had been a previous bug that was causing the bell to be silent in
some cases and not others, depending on which bell ringing function was
used (xkbbell worked, but beep from emacs or xterm did not). That bug
appears to have been fixed with the latest upgrade, but now, as others
have reported xset b seems not to have any effect. I am unable to set
the pitch or any other attributes of the bell.

In case it might be of some use, I'll point you to a similar bug I
reported against RHEL5. I don't believe the problem to be the same, but
maybe some of the information there will be useful.

Bug#574727: rrdcgi: rrdcgi segfaults when using RRD::TIME::LAST

2010-03-20 Thread Ignace Mouzannar
Package: rrdtool
Version: 1.4.2-1
Severity: important

Hello,

After upgrading to rrdtool 1.4.2-1, my package iptotal [1] became unusable.

It seems like the RRD::TIME::LAST keyword, that is used in iptotal's
CGI scripts, leads rrdcgi to a segfault.

This bug has been declared and corrected upstream [2]. A patch is
available on upstream's VCS [3] [4].

Would it be possible to include this patch in the Debian package?

Thank you for your consideration.

Bug#574235: wims: installation fails

2010-03-20 Thread Georges Khaznadar
Hello Lucas,

which environment did you use to perform the following test?

When I read again the scripts which are called upon configuration of
Wims, I am pretty sure that they can only be run if the user 'wims' and
the group 'wims' both exist.

The script which fails emits error reports about a lack of permissions.

However it is invoked after a check that this user and group do exist,
and changing the ownership of every relevant directory and file to
wims:wims. This script is invoked with the permissions of wims:wims.

I can hardly imagine what went wrong.

Please can you give me some information about the system you are using
to perform the test? I would like to perform the same test by myself to
reproduce the bug.

Best regards, Georges.

Bug#574729: apt: essential is not a priority. apt-get should not install essential packages by default

2010-03-20 Thread Santiago Vila
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.25.3

It seems apt-get installs new essential packages by default.

This *is* a bug. Please let me explain why:

The purpose and meaning of the essential flag is, and it has always
been should not be removed, *not* should be installed by default.

Those two things might seem very similar, but they are not!

The following example comes from a very old discussion about this:

Consider for example a forked e2fsprogs package having a different name,
say e2fsprogs-foo. This package would Conflicts and Replaces the ordinary
e2fsprogs package. It would be of extra priority, as it conflicts
with a required package. However, it would be also Essential: yes.

That way, installing e2fsprogs-foo would remove e2fsprogs automatically,
but the user would have to use dpkg --force-remove-essential to
remove e2fsprogs-foo in exactly the same way it would have to do that
to remove e2fsprogs.

In any of these two cases, the job of dpkg (which should be also the
job of apt-get) is to prevent the user from uninstalling an essential
package accidentally, but clearly *not* to ensure that all essential
packages are installed as e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-foo conflict
at each other and may not be installed at the same time.

By installing essential packages by default, apt-get is treating the
essential flag as if it were one more priority over required. That's
not the case, essential is just a flag to prevent accidental remove,
not a priority.

Note 1: To my amazement, Bug#177952 asks for an option to disable the
current behaviour and it's marked wontfix! While such option would
certainly be a step in the right direction, that would not change
the fact that the default behaviour is a bug!

Note 2: Whenever new essential packages are added to the system,
old essential packages depend on them (example: the diff-diffutils
transition from lenny to squeeze), so the ability to add packages to
the set of essential packages should not be considered as a good
reason to keep the current behaviour.

Thanks.
