gnucash 2.6.12 on ubuntu 16. When I now launch gnucash --nofile
--debug it appears to hang on the opening screen and does not complete
launch, so there is no menu to open files. My guess is that something
went wrong in upgrading

I've played around with a couple of the Free apps that the ATO lists on
their webpage. Payroller is a web interface app i.e runs on a server
somewhere that seems pretty easy to use and similarly ClockOn. The freebies
are generally cloud based and are primarily meant to entice you into their

That's the one. Apple changes the name and layout periodically. The person I
replied to is using Sierra and you're on Mojave. Also he was using 2.6.21 and
your crash report says you've got 3.6.
