The gift card is clearly an asset. When you receive it it is income. In most jurisdictions one would expect gift income to be not taxable however this may not always be the case. I generally have income streams that are both taxable and non-taxable so I already have placeholder subaccounts of

All those cards represent something that you own and can convert into stuff of value. As such, they are assets, much like cash. They are not, in and of themselves income, any more than cash is. They are not your liabilities, which makes them different than credit cards, and should not be tracked
