I think I have found a good way to reproduce the problem: ICAClient.
It does not seem to directly use lesstif/motif, however:

I have an ATI Radeon HD2870 - using Ubuntu 8.10 64bit. With restricted
drives (and regardless of Compiz on or off) I get the flickering too.

o3read is not in Intrepid's repos. Perhaps Tracker filters need to call
odt2txt instead, but this is not installed by default. Copying o3totxt
from Hardy seems to work as a stopgap.
