I'm not sure this is a bug. In Ubuntu 17.10 the login screen is ALWAYS
running on VT #1, which you will reach with Ctrl+Alt+F1. That does not
mean it's closed anything though. Try Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get back to your
session (running on VT #2) with the programs still running.

Thanks for the guidance, I was able to upgrade after doing a couple of
things. First I changed the file names from Xenial to Zesty in
/etc/apt/sources.list. After that I tried to upgrade the dist to 17.10
but it was going to do a partial upgrade which I heard is not a good
thing to do. I cancelled

All files on ntfs partitions are marked executable

This did not happen in 14.04 but somewhere since then udisks2 sets any & all
files on ntfs partitions as executable.
Additionally if file is copied over to user's ext4 partion the bit remains set.
Can't see why this would be intentional??

This bug seems to be fixed in Xenial proposed package. My system
reported about saned crashes (caused by assertion failure described in
this bug) on every boot. Then I installed updated package and I do not
observe any sane related crashes anymore.

This bug does not appear to be resolved on Xenial as we are seeing scope
file leakage causing systemctl to hang.
We are running the version of dbus that contains the fix
