Ah, after going through a downgrade to 8.04 Mythbuntu, MythDora and Fedora, I went back and tried MythBuntu 9.10 again. This time I followed advice on this page: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Saa7134-alsa And I was able to get tvtime to generate sound by using arecord piped to aplay.
