Um, from reading that link, I guess I was a bit off on the number of seats.
I guess it seats a bit more than 200...

Anyway, it's a neat old theater (if the info. on that site is accurate, it
was first built in 1929), and I spent much of the 80s and part of the 90s
watching double features for only $2 in its seats. Plus, who can resist the
charm of watching films/videos/theater in a theater that was also a porn
theater for a short period of its history? ;)

Eagle Rock is located between Pasadena and Glendale, right on Route 66.
Nice WiFi coffee shop right up the street, some good restaurants including
the Best Pizza in L.A., Casa Bianca (where they call it a pizza pie).

It's a fairly large theater, seats at least 200, I would think.

Here's what I think makes the difference for me as a producer as to
which live streaming video service I choose to use:

Customer service---are they responsive? Do they fix problems fast?

Reliability---does it all work?

Capacity---how many simultaneous viewers does it allow?

Features that work well with each other---For example blog.tv allows
split screen, but only archives one of the screens. That sucks to
offer a feature, but then don't support it with another feature

Ability to embed it all in your own web page

I want to brand my show, not have it be in their branded environment.
All the services allow you to embed video. Fine. But don't they also
allow me to embed their chat room at the same time?

to accompany your videos? In other words will a student complete

(*Disclaimer: - One of my friends/business relationships uses SIMPLY
DIGI.COM's service. I do not make any money, points or kudos)

They are happy with SimplyDigi's service (used for the training videos
and testing for each level of the course completed).
Student response has been good to excellent (depends on age).
Easy to use and navigate as a newbie. Nothing flashy or fancy.

...A Learning Management System LMS / LCMS handles and controls the
delivery of self-paced, instructor led, e-learning courses. The LMS
lets you publish courses and place them in an easy to use online
catalog. Learners log into the LMS with any browser, select courses
from the course catalog and take them. The LMS tracks the learners
activities, providerships, professional licenses, progress, compliance
with course assignments and much more. The LMS provides online reports
for each course and learner yet is inexpensive and provides the
essential features you need

We shot a simple/straight forward video intro for each course. Another
company produced a Power Point slide show that is the course material.
That PPT was transfered to Flash (pause, rewind, take a break and come
back later or another day). It is secure, allows for a teaser video
and I believe you can customize it to your hearts content to get it to
do what you want.

They do the billing, you do the billing? Lots of questions.

If you just want to password protect the videos to sell, then another
one stop solution to look into is Google APPS
. You can set up a membership and do some
clever stuff with their other offerings (Google Video, Checkout,
Picaso, GoogleTalk, Orkut).

A while back Amazon had something that looked promising. I cannot for
the life remember what it was called (if it had a distinct name) but
the obvious advantage was a potentially higher ranking in a web
search, a established and secure checkout, and it did provide a
preview. It may have been called Amazon Author (for self publishers).
If it comes to me I'll post it so that everyone can see it (unless
someone knows and can save me now!!)

There are a few other sites that also might be of use. Jonny
Platinum Goldstein uses and that might work.
or could also be a solution.

GoToMeeting is more along the lines of a web conference but (I
believe) there is a way to archive/sell video access.

Plenty of other ideas will be shared. If you want to know more about
how we used Simply Digi contact me off list.

An ABC producer contacted us 3 weeks ago to see if they could use our
videos on their show.
As mentioned before, the videos documented Ryan and I courting each other.
The producer said she was doing a story showing how the internet can
bring people togetherversus the internet isolating people.

we were featured for about 30 seconds of the 3 minute segment.
Other parts were a US soldier in Iraq who watched his child being
born, and that older English guy on Youtube who made thousands of
friends through his storytelling.
It was sugary sweet for sure.

Overall, I was pretty amazed by 2 things.
--that iCaught was so positive about the web in general. Im used to
network TV portraying the web as a dark competitor. maybe its ABC's
attempt to speed up the convergence of TV and the web.
--that so many people still watch traditional TV like this show. We
got a bunch of emails from people saying they saw us. without any
warning from us, they just happened to be watching this TV show.

I plan on doing some more experimenting with live stuff too. I
tested out Ustream.tv and I kinda like them, but I'm open to trying
others. I was wondering if anyone has noticed a big difference in
streaming quality from one service or another. Because, one comment
I got a lot was the stream was gittery or the audio was out of
sync I happen to think that that would be the case with most
streaming services but I don't know. It could also have something to
do with my connection or the amount of movement in the frame.

If you want to see how the first Live-Fi Saint Louis went check it
out here: http://lofistl.ning.com/video/video/show?id=814862%3AVideo%

I had a friend doing camera for me (a DVX100 piped into my MacBook
Pro via firewire) but the audio was from the MacBookPro because for
some reason I couldn't get the audio from the camera to work with
the flash interface without it crashing the browser. I tend to think
that that was a Flash bug more than anything. But the audio turned
out good none the less. We also rolled tape on the camera so that we
have a good quaity record of the show--clips of which will appear on
my vlog.

Heh its quite funny that someone went to the trouble of removing the
woman with the hat. But the mirror of the bloke they've used has a
foot missing!

Old ways f imagining how to achieve these things, long before they
were actually practical, look like a lot of fun. I like the
alternative fantasy worlds that blend old and new together. Will the
computer outlive the car and the plane? Id really like to live to see
the day where the sane leisurely pace of yesteryear meets some of the
better technologies of tomorrow.

What better use for a video ipod, or surfng the net in general than
when taking the slow boat or airship across the world instead of the
fast and destructive plane? Or for watching video whilst you take the
bus or train to work, long after the age of the individual, and
individual transport, starts to wane.

Cheers

[videoblogging] Podcast and New Media Expo: Who's Attending?

2007-09-12 Thread Sunny Gault
Ok... so this may seem like a silly question, but who exactly is
attending the expo this year? I'm sure there's a lot of us wanting to
cover the event for our own internet shows, and it would great to get
some sort of list going so we can plan out our interviews in advance.

It's easy to figure out who's speaking at the event... but who else
will be attending?

Thanks guys!

The use of the amazing TeleOptiKon technology is not without risk of
physical harm to the operator. My guess is that he wore his foot down
to a stump operating that foot-pedal switch which must be pressed
twice for each frame of video--just one of the hazards of life in the
old days. But, don't worry, the use of devices such as foot switches
were strictly controlled by the Board Electrical Impairments during
the late 1920s. I have not heard of a single case in at least a decade.

[videoblogging] Re: Last Next To Heaven of Season 1

2007-09-12 Thread Rob Parrish
Thanks Bill and everyone for the kind words. I do think NTH sharpened
me up a bit. I think its a great exercise for any non-professional
artist/filmmaker/musician to put yourself on a schedule and create.
Not having all the time in the world actually makes some cool stuff
pop out. The random nature of the images also made me tell stories in
a way I wouldn't have otherwise. But, looking back on it, all the
stories are close to the things I'm interested in. So, in the end,
throwing something random at yourself can end up simply pushing
forward the things you wanted to say anyway. Like a Rorschach blot
(off topic, but hear they are making a movie of Watchmen -- can't wait).

As to what was challenging, there were several archive movies that sat
around for months, and while I liked them, I couldn't think of a thing
to do with them. Some are still on my hard drive, not used, others
suddenly came in handy . . . out of the blue. This goes back to
working on a schedule, it forces you to keep turning your raw
materials around in your mind.

As far as the one I'm most proud of, that's hard . . . but check out
this one, its probably the most profound . . .
http://www.nexttoheaven.net/2007/06/next-to-heaven-38_05.html

Also, I won a $1,000 bucks for this one, which is a big video payday
for me!
http://www.nexttoheaven.net/2007/04/next-to-heaven-33-tapes-of-my-father.html

As to the archive folks, I've just recently dropped them a line. They
are amazing, what a great service to the community. I love these old
films and would have had a great time just watching them without any
project to feed into.

Rob

[videoblogging] sound levels in movies

2007-09-12 Thread JD Lasica
Question: I'm nearly done with a political mashup that combines a lot
of news clips. Some of the sound volumes on the clips are pretty low.

There *must* be a way to bump up the sound levels, but I haven't found it.

When I open the clips in Quicktime, they are already at the maximum sound level.

When I bump up the level in iMovie to the maximum (150%), they're
still not loud enough.

I have QuickTime Pro, iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Audacity ... so far
haven't discovered the trick. Anyone here know?

Thanks!

Re: [videoblogging] I invite you to have coffee with dougri and a special project in Cambodia

2007-09-12 Thread Beth Kanter
Hi Jay and Doug and everyone:

Yes, the cameras that I brought over were purchased with money I
raised from my blog doing a personal fundraising campaign!

My documentation of the trip is here:
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/cloggersummit2007/index.html

The campaign page is here
http://cambodiabloggingsummit.wikispaces.com/

To add to the story, there's been a third video blogger from Cambodia
to start. And, this guy, Vutha, didn't win one of the cameras! I
showed they could do the same thing with a cameraphone or digital
camera with a video setting.

Anyway, he needed a little bit a remote tech support, but it is a great start:
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2007/09/another-cambodi.html

The video blogging workshop curriculum is here:
http://cloggersummit.wikispaces.com/Video+Blogging

The Cambodian Bloggers Summit is here:
http://cloggersummit.wikispaces.com/

On 9/11/07, Jay dedman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I just wanted to share my daily vlog with members of the group showing
a project just completed in Cambodia. This project began with the
Vloggercon t-shirts donated to the Sharing Foundation in Cambodia. Beth
Kanter does volunteer work with them, and talked about wanting to bring
videoblogging to Cambodia. Actually a total of seven camcorders and ten
digital cams were donated to this project. I had assumed that the three
Hasbro Vcams I donated were the ones given out at the Camodian bloggers
summit, but i was mistaken. Jay Dedman and Ryanne Hodson brought four
video cams to the Sharing Foudnation on their recent trip to Cambodia.
Beth Kanter acquired three more vcams for the summit where she was
doing a presentation. This story is just to show the power of the net
and what four individuals can do. We have given these young people in
Cambodia the 21st century version of a soapbox to spread the word of
their various causes and issues. So please join me for a cup of coffee.

Doug does this cool thing where he make a short video each week on
Youtube to talk about things he likes. It's doug who found the small
50$ Vcams that we took to Camodia.

Actually, this video is a nice continuation of a story that stated on this
 list:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggnL-hDLcew
We sent some old Vloggercon t-shirts to some students in Cambodia.
Ryamond, the boy king, said you should send the cameras instead!.
 good idea.

So a series of coincidences happened where we could actually visit
cambodia and give the students the cameras that Doug bought. Beth
Kanter visited right after us and did a whole workshop at a Cambodian
 blogging conference.

Now we have some Cambodians videoblogging.
Beth, can you share some of the links?

 Jay
