[videoblogging] Technology Preview at the Podcast Expo

2007-09-27 Thread Doug Kaye
If you like The Levelator for audio, you may want to come by by PNME
presentation on Saturday. Bruce Sharpe, developer of The Levelator,
and I will be giving the first time demonstration of a technology
code-named Hydra, which we think will be of particular interest to
folks in video. Hydra is not The Levelator for Video. It's
something entirely different. But if you record (or want to record)
interviews in remote locations, or if you record (or want to record)
with multiple cameras, Hydra is going to make your life a whole lot
easier.

Hydra isn't available yet. We're just previewing the technology for
your feedback. And we're not selling anything. Like The Levelator, we
plan offer Hydra to the community for free.

Hope to see you there.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Uploading videos to multiple sites

2007-09-27 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
The first 99 cents you spend buys you 25 extra uploads, then they're 99
cents a piece after that.

If it would save me a couple hours which is what I spend uploading now, that
would be well worth a buck. My time is worth slightly more than $0.50 /
hour.

Though like I said, I haven't tried it yet so I can't really recommend it.

With adobes sample player code and my 960x540 video, I got fullscreen

celeron 900 processor, win xp, 512mb ram, simple graphics card. This

But its still nowhere near as efficient as the adobe sample. There

Im assuming its the fullscreen hardware accel in the new player, as
opposed to h264. This is great :)

Im currently hacking around with the JW player to see if its code
 like

   videoClip.display.smoothing = true;
   videoClip.display.deblocking = 4;

which is causing jw player not to take effect of the nice fullscreen
acceleration. If its something more complex than that, then its likely

Thanks for the info, you are on to something there. On a Macbook

I am researching this issue, at a guess certain settings are
  required
 to enable hardware-accelerated fullscreen mode.

So for example here is the excellent JW Player playing my h264
 test:

 http://www.unquack.com/jw.html

(I just changed the video extension from mp4 to flv to get it
  working
with JW whilst waiting for a new version that supports mp4 and m4v
 extensions)

Its using a lot more CPU than my previous example. Some of this
  may be
due to player controls, but I hope to discover that changing a few
settings in the player sourcecode will enable the hardware
  accelerated
fullscreen mode, hopefully for both h264 and on2 type formats.

I certainly anticipate companies like blip taking notice at this,
because I am excited about the energy saving possibilities,
 and the
ability for fullscreen to work nice on a wider range of computers.

I also hope this will be an era where we can forget about slow
framerates like 12fps, still I am out of date on this issue,
  what does
blip use now? Either way I anticipate more cpu will be saved by
changing a few lines in their flash player source, than on
 using low
 framerates.

Re: [videoblogging] cell phone picture blog platform?

2007-09-27 Thread Jan McLaughlin
If you send from phone via MMS, the subject becomes the title of the photo,
and the body of the MMS text becomes the body of the blog post.

To set up your flickr account, go to 'Your Account' -- 'Email' --
--'Upload to Blog Email' There's an email address you may add to your
phone's address book - one for just uploading to Flickr and one to upload to
Flicker and autopost to your blog.

You've first to set up your blog account (including credentials) @ Flickr,
and probably a few hoops to authenticate (been too long since I did this).
That is accomplished in 'Your Account' -- 'Extending Flickr'

You can futz with the layout of the photo - size, orientation, text wrap,
etc., by editing 'Your Blog List' -- 'Settings' and 'Layout'

Just uploading a photo from phone now so you can see:

Here's the Flickr page - http://www.flickr.com/photos/fauxpress/1448323937/

Here's the vlog page -

The premise is that there is a burgeoning class of musicians are
forming direct relationships with their fans. This cuts out the
agency middle men...and all the high costs of promotion. Independent
musicians can then hope to make a living by selling their own music
 and doing live performances.

Reading the article, I wonder if you could apply the same logic to
online video. Do independent video makers need to rely on advertising
modelscontinuing the same relationship to a bloated middle man? Or
will a different relationship develop between people watching and the
people who make the stuff they want to watch?

 jay

I think the 'problem' with this concept is that there's a difference
between how music is consumed and how video is consumed.

I think the only way a video maker could pull something like this off
would be to already have a base of people interested in their videos
enough to chip in to pay for the costs of creating and distributing
that video. Kind of like the idea you were talking about that said
something like 800 people paying $5 each.

http://foureyedmonsters.com has been doing really progressive stuff
with online distribution and promotion. Check out their tutorial:
http://foureyedmonsters.com/category/tutorial/ .

Granted, they're talking about a feature-length film, but I would
assume the same concepts would apply to shorter internet productions.
