Thanks for the compliments Brook :) You are no slouch in this. You are
creating wonderful videos yourself! It appears that the
NaVloPoMo'vians are all breaking out of those molds and experimenting
with new things.

Here is something that I find troublesome...

There are so many fantastic videos being created for navlopomo and the
majority of them are being hosted on Blip. I just went to the Blip
front page and I see not a mention of any NaVloPoMo videos on the
front page. Nothing. I see that Cooking with Jack Black is a hit
though. Wow. Really...just...wow.

It saddens me that Blip has gone the way of promoting Internet TV as
their base and bypassed the independent videobloggers who, were really
the ones that got them the attention when they first started up. Oh
sure, occasionally Blip will feature a non internet television
creator. The ratio is very lopsided though.

I'm sorry Blip. I really don't want to point fingers at you but...you
are the ones that host my videos. I chose you then because I believed
in what you were doing...back then. I'm troubled with what you've
become. Alas, I guess you have to follow the money or promote where
the money may be.

So, when we, the Independents have been tossed to the side in favor
of shows and internet tv, posts like yours Brook inspire me to
continue promoting the people who do this fantastic creative work
and push the boundaries.

Yes, everyone, please check out the amazing things that people are
doing for NaVloPoMo. http://nablopomo.ning.com/group/videobloggers

Wreck Salvage was born from a desire to share our work with a greater

Personally I dont see WS as a show. It's not...hmm...glossy. It's not
produced. It's not
trying to mimic television. I guess it could be classified as a show but no way
would I ever
call it Internet TV. I look at the work that you guys are doing coming more

[videoblogging] Re: everyday video in November

2007-11-06 Thread Steve Watkins
Im not so sure the net is going to be much different from distribution methods
of the
past, when it comes to promotion. Most of the time, nobody in the promotion
business
has a clue how to promote strange, different, risque things that push the
envelope. Its so
much easier to promote stuff that has an easier to recognise form. Something
like Human
Dog could also be considered a show, but only they themselves seemed to know
how to
promote it.

Promotion on the net is the weakest link right now, as best I can tell, and
most of the time
the viral sical forms of prootion have nothing like the reach of traditional
promotion.

But have even the relatively great internet companies like blip really gone
that far at
promotion? Putting stuff on your front page is just the beginning.

Oh I see at the other end of the spectrum that the completely rubbish entity I
used to spill
a lot of venom at, network2,tv, appears to have disappeared up its own
promotube. But
because they seem to be addicted to positive spin, the message says 'we are
upgrading
your network2 experience'. Still maybe they are right, I consider nothing to be
an upgrade
compared to what that guide to internet tv used to be.

Cheers

What is a show? We use the term to include anything which is regularly
created, and which contains some degree of intent. Wreck and Salvage is most
definitely a show, by our usage. As for TV, I don't know what TV is anymore.
Does it cover public access? If there is a spectrum with Smallville on one
side, and dogs on skateboards on the other, blip occupies a large area in the
middle.

The situation at blip is not that we feel we have outgrown the original
vloggers in search for greener ($) pastures. It is that we are well occupied
keeping up with growth and making sure our servers are serving. We have just
moved offices, our project manager just left, and I don't even have time to
update my blog anymore! So I am wondering if there is any truth to your
criticism, that needs correcting, because we really don't intend to leave the
community behind.

But yes, if we had gotten an e-mail about NaVloPoMo, Eric certainly would have
promoted it.

I had to hack a solution to get it on the homepage - see the first
how shows this week entry. Be sure to visit the tag, though, - all
of the entries are there - and it is a far better playback experience
and RSS solution (again, the show was so that i could quickly put it
on the homepage):

If you see a video that SHOULD be a part of this, and it is in

Thanks for the compliments Brook :) You are no slouch in this. You are
creating wonderful videos yourself! It appears that the
NaVloPoMo'vians are all breaking out of those molds and experimenting
 with new things.

Here is something that I find troublesome...

There are so many fantastic videos being created for navlopomo and the
majority of them are being hosted on Blip. I just went to the Blip
front page and I see not a mention of any NaVloPoMo videos on the
front page. Nothing. I see that Cooking with Jack Black is a hit
 though. Wow. Really...just...wow.

[disclosure: Everybody knows I'm a fan of the blip people, work ethic
and business sense]

It saddens me that Blip has gone the way of promoting Internet TV as
their base and bypassed the independent videobloggers who, were really
the ones that got them the attention when they first started up. Oh
sure, occasionally Blip will feature a non internet television
creator. The ratio is very lopsided though.

That's not really what happened. As far as I recall, when I first
started trolling http://blip.tv , they had two tabs. One of them was
Shows and the other one was Episodes or something like that. If
you clicked on the Shows tab, there wasn't JACK there! :D ... The
top 6 shows never changed and either number 2 or number 3 was Josh Leo.

Meanwhile, there were tons of episodes being loaded daily, so your
'eye' was attracted to the individual clips that were being presented.
There was no initial blip focus on independent clips... It was that
the shows didn't EXIST at all. :)

Eventually, some of the shows gained some prominence, and the way I
see it, blip INTELLIGENTLY went with the flow of their niche, which is
online, serial shows. You had your Amanda Across America and
Scriggity and Vlog Soup and Reinventing Television and Noodlescar and
I think CommandN, etc. After they had a bunch of serial, episodic
shows, they started with that player that would skip from show to show
on the front page. After that, they progressed to how the page looks now.

My point is that as far as I can see, there wasn't a change in blip's
focus. It was that there was NOTHING to focus ON at the time, so it
seemed that the site was all about people posting random clips.

On top of that, blip.tv is a 'back end'. I complained AGES AGO that
they had a one-way friends list system, where you couldn't tell if
anyone else friended you, and they couldn't tell if you added them
either. When I asked about that, the point was made to me that they
weren't trying to be a destination site. So... Basically, what you
were seeing originally was an 'uncovered' back-end site. All that
stuff is still going on in the background, but that's what it always
was, background processes. That doesn't make those random videos any
less important than the serial shows, but it's not a niche. You can
put random videos on YouTube, Revver, Veoh... ANYWHERE, including
blip. What makes them stand out is their attention to and promotion
of serial shows, NOT the fact that people can post random videos or
even random *collections* of videos and get automatically featured on
the front page.

I see you've already responded to Adam's statements/questions about
*requesting* some recognition.

I'm sorry Blip. I really don't want to point fingers at you but...you
are the ones that host my videos. I chose you then because I believed
in what you were doing...back then. I'm troubled with what you've
become. Alas, I guess you have to follow the money or promote where
 the money may be.

I don't think it's a money issue. I think it's a business plan issue.
I would imagine that blip.tv is a frontrunner in making deals for
independent video producers to get either advertising dollars or
directly sponsored, and they're honing their skills DAILY. Not that I
run around looking for stuff like this, but I hadn't seen anything
like the sponsorships that they got for Ze Frank's ARCHIVE... not even
NEW shows!, which I think was DeWars and Amanda's sponsorship from
PalTalk.

Believe me. If you end up in a situation where you want your videos
monetized, SOMETHING about the work that blip's putting in right this
very minute is going to come in handy for you, either because of blip
directly or because someone down the line followed their business
model(S).

So, when we, the Independents have been tossed to the side in favor
of shows and internet tv, posts like yours Brook inspire me to
continue promoting the people who do this fantastic creative work
 and push the boundaries.

There's no tossing to the side. Blip.tv is a back-end. I never
read anywhere that blip was focused on random videos. I *DID* read
that they were focused on serial, episodic shows. Also, Adam's point
about who is and isn't independent applies.

Yes, everyone, please check out the amazing things that people are
 doing for NaVloPoMo.

1. I tend to not fuc* with people who provide me a tremendous service for
free

2. Blip is an awesome firm – quite possibly the best firm I've seen in the
video, if not the entire web 2.0 space. It is, however, a firm of human
beings. Please let them be human beings.

The show vs. legacy-TV imitators thing is never going to be fully put to
bed, because so few serialized web video programs fall within one extreme or
another. It's a case by case thing, and not all of are going to agree.
There's some real cool cats and some total douchebags in this space, and
perhaps the best practice here is to catch people doing things right and
tell everyone who wants to listen about that. We can all do better at this –
myself included.

Wreck Salvage was born from a desire to share our work with a greater

Have you or anyone emailed the blip folks about promoting the NaVloPoMo?
I'm sure they are open to suggestions, as that's pretty much been their
 M.O.
from day one. You catch more flies with honey, etc.

What is a show? We use the term to include anything which is regularly
created, and which contains some degree of intent. Wreck and Salvage is
 most
definitely a show, by our usage. As for TV, I don't know what TV is
 anymore.
Does it cover public access? If there is a spectrum with Smallville on one

side, and dogs on skateboards on the other, blip occupies a large area in
 the
 middle.

The situation at blip is not that we feel we have outgrown the original
vloggers in search for greener ($) pastures. It is that we are well
 occupied
keeping up with growth and making sure our servers are serving. We have
 just
moved offices, our project manager just left, and I don't even have time
 to
update my blog anymore! So I am wondering if there is any truth to your
criticism, that needs correcting, because we really don't intend to leave
 the
 community behind.

But yes, if we had gotten an e-mail about NaVloPoMo, Eric certainly would
 have
 promoted it.
