: [WIRELESS-LAN] FW: Outsourcing WiFi to Apogee
I'm curious to hear how folks are handling APs in their dorms including with
outside contractors like Apogee? Are you able to put APs in the dorm room
themselves or are you restricted to the hallways? How do you protect the APs
from normal student wear

Andy,
At UT Knoxville, we went from AP’s in hallways to AP’s in some dorm rooms,
taking one of the room’s wired ports in the process. We’ve not had very many
problems with the AP’s other than when the students move into their rooms. Even
then, it wasn’t
The first wireless dorm deployment(8 years ago) put all of our AP's in
the hallways, but the signal doesn't reach the outer parts of the
building where the student's desk are, especially the 5ghz. We are
slowly moving AP's into their rooms, but then students complained about
the lights

We're moving from hallway deployments, which had definite signal issues for
difficult buildings, to in room Aruba 93H AP's. This microcell approach
has gotten good feedback from the students, and hasn't increased the
overall cost to deploy wireless.
Since it's in the student rooms, they are
Perhaps this re-hashed discussion of in-room as opposed to in hallway
placement should have a different topic.
Are there any more people who have either out-sourced or are considering
outsourcing provisioning and management of dorm/apartment networking for
a campus?

Hi Andy,
Apogee provides all the WiFi infrastructure for our Res Halls here at Tarleton
State University. We are very happy with the service and the support they
provide. Internally, we are a Cisco shop but Apogee is using an Aruba
solution. We were impressed with both the speed and ease

We are able to put APs in rooms if we wanted, but opted to put them in hallways
to limit the amount we would need to deploy, as well as making replacements
easier. We will occasionally put an access point in a room if we have to, but
it not typically necessary.
We have been lucky so far,
We did a pilot this semester with an Aruba AP with extra wired ports on the AP
in every room. So far so good. The AP's are on a list of items that is
checked at the end of the semester. If they are missing or damaged by the
student then they are responsible. So far the only issues are them

I've found that now that students live and die by wireless, self preservation
keeps them from touching the access points. We've had them in our dorms for
close to 10 years, and haven't had any vandalized yet.

We also started with hallway deployments, but have had the same experience with
the controllers basing their settings on an open environment. So into the
rooms the APs go...
