Assuming that Mr. MacQueen doesn't beat me to the punch on this
recommendation...

You need to get the Rhino comp series "Street Jams-Electric Funk Vol. 1-4".

It's a relatively well thought out collection of both the classics and dogs
from the early electro/hip-hop scene.  A great introduction to the variety
of sounds that people were popping and locking to, mostly during 1982 to
1985.

Stand out tracks for me include:

Al-Naafiyish (The Soul) - Hashim
122 B.P.M. - Jive Rhythm Trax
White Horse - Laid Back
Computer Power - Jamie Jupitor
Computer Age (Push the Button) - Newcleus

Unfortunately the comps do not come with headspin tips & tricks, but they
sound just as good as those high school late night radio shows used to...
