As early as the thirties and forties, film sound was progressing in this
direction. One of my film professors who specializes in sound actually
played me clips of imageless films (if you will), where people made music by
mutilating and tapeing objects to film. They would paste on leaves, cut
rhythms into it (ala Brinkmann) and record ambient sound to make
experimental music. I can't say much of it was particularly pleasant to
listen to, but it was probably the first.
