I saw dj spooky play a local bar about 3 years ago. and -big surprise- it pretty much sucked. he had three tables set up, and on the main two he was train-wrecking slowed down jungle tracks (45's playing on 33), and on the third table was just white noise and sfx records that he'd leave playing for a while and occasionaly tinker with them.
i know his angle is from the "conceptual art" side- but i dont really get why he does shows that are hyped as dj shows. i've seen him reviewed in big name art magazines for shows in some pretty respectable new york galleries- but in this setting it is more art installation type stuff- some of it looks like it may actually have some interesting acoustic soundscape stuff going on. but for the sake of performing music venues- i think he needs to drop the "dj" and just be called spooky, or maybe sloppy.. -p
