Though I'm not too crazy about the soul/R&B update of "Sex on the Beach," I also champion the new Electrofunk album: Mr De's _Electronic Funkyshit_. Upon first listen, I found it quite derived and too short on the sort of booty tracks I had come to expect from this former DJ Assault collaborator. After another listen or two, I got past the initial flaws I had sensed and came to enjoy the CD for being as derivative as it is. De's quite astute when it comes to the many different styles of urban music. With DJ Assault, all you heard was their booty tracks, but on his new full-length, he's dropping mad styles -- R&B, booty, synth-funk, bounce hip-hip, electro, booty -- and mixing many of them together in weird ways, such as on the jaw-dropping "Sex on the Beach 2000." Many will probably write this guy off, but I think he's doing some interesting stuff. Sure, it's not the most cerebral music. Sure feels good though.
