hmm well i'd say those were inspired by basic channel. perhaps nothing more than that, if you want to get technical. they are still good for what they are _imho_, even if they aren't as good as the basic channel records (and admittedly, very few records which emulate the basic channel sound are as good as the real thing). basic channel is a common reference point that people understand. if you listen to those tracks i'm talking about, chances are you won't say 'there is no goddamn basic channel influence here to speak of, dude.' in addition to that, i've got a record that i believe he's credited for having done that's actually pretty accomplished in that vein, more along porter ricks style. very dark, very cool. i think your original statement about the lack of subtlety in heiko laux's work is an overgeneralization. i'm not about to say that he's the best ever, but he does have more good records than many other producers, and he is pushing a sound that many techno producers don't bother with in this time when the majority of techno records consist of hard monotracks. everyone else who pushes it is lumped into 'idm.' -dave
