I've lived two blocks away from Wayne State University for six years. That is about three miles away from Hart Plaza. I live in the dreaded Cass Corridor...(now euphamisimically called midtown) I am not a intimidating person (size or shape) and have not a had problems with crime (by not drawing attention to yourself you will not have to worry). Again I would like to stress that the police and their prying eyes are the ones I would worry about. You will have many homeless people ASKING for change. (common of all major cities) But after traveling quite extensively around the USA I have to say detroit homeless have some of the most entertaining confidence scams around! Anyway, The Ramada on Bagley is one of the cheaper hotels. There is also a knights/days inn and a couple more lower class motels on East Jefferson (that is toward Belle Isle from downtown) that are really cheap if you do not mind a motel vs a hotel. No trip to detroit would be complete without a drive around the belle smokin and listen to your favorite "joint".

I would suggest trying to find opinions off the list from people who are more willing to be candid. But if you do decide to stay there then don't stay anywhere except the Athenium!
