Journalists like inventing words and half the time the artists make them up too (eg 'skratch music' by Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike in favour of 'turntablism') and kids in Chicago came up with 'house'. My current faves are 'skip-hop', the (dubious) new Australian genre taking in pub hip-hop like The Avalanches, and 'tech-hop', which describes the new techno/digital take on urban music exemplified by Missy Elliott and Timbaland. They're not supposed to be restrictive, and box people in creatively, it's just fun. It's like a secret language.
