Ive written realtime DSP software under linux and the latency is excellent compared to windows. Obviously the latency achieved is dependant on the spec of the system and the complexity of digital filter algo's involved. 5ms would be fine for mixing - Ive had decks running through the DSP stuff I wrote at 10ms and the latency wasn't noticeable. Anything under 10 is usually considered preety good for software.
