I'll second Soulseek. Another relatively bs-free program is WinMX, which
happens to be my first choice. www.winmx.com I've tried Soulseek a couple
of times in the few weeks I've had it... for what I've been looking for,
WinMX seems to have a much larger quantity of offerings. And it's not
simply quantity either, I've had good luck with finding new electronic music
to sample. I'll note that a couple of people I know did initially experience
problems connecting with WinMX, but after tinkering with some settings, they
were able to get it to work fine. Personally, I've never had a problem (I'm
on dial-up and I also use a firewall).

Tried LimeWire... I hated it. Also tried out something called Blubster,
which was so-so... I still prefer WinMX over that. I also have Bearshare, I
have had no luck getting it to even work.

Check out www.afternapster.com for a fairly comprehensive list of what's hot
as far as the current offering of P2P programs go.

I know of people that have had good luck finding songs via ftp, but I'd only
go that route with a broadband connection. There's not much that's more
boring than watching something upload for 20-30 minutes in order to satisy
someone's "ratio" requirements.
