ARTIST: VARIOUS COMPILED & MIXED BY: HELL TITLE: ELECTRONICBODY - HOUSEMUSIC LABEL: REACT FORMAT: DOUBLE CD CAT NO: REACTCD226 RELEASE DATE: 28 OCTOBER 02
In 2002, more so than any other DJ of his stature, the records in Hell's box spoke volumes, and were preferably heard at great volume, in clubs, festivals and private gatherings throughout the world. The sharp-suited ambassador of the most glamorous sound around - the Gigolo style - he found himself at the vanguard of the much-hyped electroclash movement, the plastic electro-pop phenomenon that threatened to upset the mainstream. As usual, it was a case of everyone playing catch-up. By spinning the kind of records he's always played without compromise - a thrilling mix of the old and the new, of disco, punk, techno, rock, house and weird, trippy electro - Hell's position at the cutting-edge of dance music for over a decade, as a prescient underground icon, has never been questioned. That an entire scene would flourish around him is ample testament to his capacity as a cultural tastemaker. As Germany's leading DJ/label boss Hell's Gigolo style has spread the world over as the charges under his growing lexicon of Gigolos and Gigolettas have become stars in their own right - Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Tiga, Crossover, Zombie Nation and of course Fischerspooner. Now the focus is back on the man who made it all happen. With his first mix CD since his universally acclaimed FUSE mix from Belgian's legendary techno club and Hell's first double mix outing, Hell not only shows the breadth and depth of his visionary scope but also stays well and truly ahead of the game. CD1 takes a more house route through the modern productions of some of today's best labels; joining the dots between UR, Environ, Playhouse, Perlon, Axis, Planet E and of course International Deejay Gigolos. CD2 on the other hand takes a twisted take on electro and spans several decades from the Belgian Nu-Beat powerhouse of late 80's 'EBM' (Electronic Body Music) with Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 to the electronic avant-garde of Chris & Cosey (ex-Throbbing Gristle) and Liaisons Dangereuses to the new geniuses of the electro/techno hybrid monster; Terence Fixmer, David Carretta and Green Velvet showing that Hell is not only still the king of 'Electroclash' but also a man with a vision that goes well beyond such short-sighted confines. In mixing this double CD Hell has used the new Traktor DJ studio technology from Native Instruments (as used by Scion to re-arrange Basic Channel's back catalogue to devastating effect for Tresor's 100th release). Hell, as well as being a sharp dressing DJ maverick, is heavily interested in innovation and in this mix he plays with the contrast of a selection of classical tracks combined with a revolutionary mixing technique that breathes new life into the tracks by cueing, looping and filtering them in ways impossible with turntables or CD players. Bringing this combination of contrasting elements to the attention of the audience is, what makes this release unique compared to a "normal" Mix-CD with a nice selection of tracks. And to cap it all off, you know Hell's gonna be looking slick behind the decks in the latest Gucci giving it up, as ever, in true Gigolo style. But hey, enough yapping, stick the CD on and go straight to Hell! The double mix CD features tracks from Underground Resistance* / Metro Area / Jeff Mills / Nitzer Ebb / Green Velvet / Chris & Cosey / David Carretta / Front 242 / Recloose / Derrick Carter / Justus Kohncke / Pantytec / Smith n Hack / Playgroup and many more *Please note track 1 on CD1 is 'Transition' by Underground Resistance and not 'Inspiration' as listed on the CD promo cover tracklist. With their sharp eye for new talent and their natural professionalism and experience in the music business, they have made their mark. Gigolo is the meeting place of established artists and talented newcomers' worldwide. At present Gigolo is working with some of the most promising artists in the music scene from Fischerspooner, Tuxedomoon, Miss Kitten & The Hacker, Tiga to Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke amongst others. Born in Traunstein, a small and quaint city in Bavaria, Hell grew up with a consuming passion for music. It wasn't until the seventies that Hell discovered punk. In 1977 at 15 he bought his first punk record. the Damned's DAMNED, DAMNED, DAMNED, then it happened, he was hooked. At 18 he started his career as a DJ at the local club `Libella`, where he worked with the concept of everything works - mixing punk, rock'n'roll and pop to ska, hip-hop, new wave and disco. When Germany was overcome by Techno, Hell was with it, and he quickly became a known face in the Munich club scene. While his sets were never prepared his inspiration came directly by the moment and the crowd and in `85 he starred with RUN DMC on their legendary `Munich after show party` on their German tour for the `Raising Hell` album. It was in 92 while playing at the Loveparade in Berlin he ended his set with his own track `My definition of House`, R & S boss Renaat Vandepapeliere happened to be in the crowd and offered him a record deal on the spot. Hell then went on to help launch the label Disko B - that released most of Hell's nineties material. After that he started as an A&R at Logic records in Frankfurt signing artists such as The Orb and Blake Baxter. Knowing now the way the industry works he decided never to start his own business...three years later, he changed his mind- ready to do it his way. Sitting beside Jeff Mills on one of their many flights to a gig and discussing their crazy life style it was, he came up with the idea of the labels name.... in 95 Gigolo-Records was born. Hell set about contacting many of the artists he'd met during his years of deejaying all over the globe and offered them a deal. Gigolo went on to produce hits like Jeff Mills ''Shifty Disco EP, Christopher Just's 'I'm A Disco Dancer`, Miss Kittin & The Hacker's '1982' from the 'Champagne!' EP, the `Foremost Poets' 'Moonraker' and most notably Zombie Nation's 'Kernkraft 400 all proving to be a major success. Like Warp, Soma and Tresor, Gigolo is one of the few only essential techno and electronic labels to emerge in the nineties, however Gigolo has taken one step further, creating it's own trademark. Gigolo is a mixture of modern retro, flashy, trashy, glamour and sex. Wherever Hell plays, be it Japan or Berlin or Barcelona or London the crowd seems to follow his tastes. But while producing a number of acts he still maintained his own career as a DJ sticking to the eccentric style he started off with. He's been voted as one of the most wanted DJ`s in electronic music by one of Germany's top music magazines `Groove` and was recently awarded the title `best DJ' by `Music and Machine« congress in Berlinthis July. Hell has taken part in all Love Parades, Tribal Gatherings and contributed to various projects like Radio One's `John Peel Session` being the first German electronic producer to do so. And while Hell continues to produce and DJ, his ambitions don't end there...from creating the show music for Kostas Murkudis during Paris fashion week last season, to his book `The Great Gigolo Swindle` to his club `Club Villa« in Traunstein. His second book is planned next year following an account of the experiences of an erotic dancer and prostitute in LA. Never forgetting his roots he recently began sponsoring the local football team TSV Altenmarkt who will wear his name on their shirts. Later this year he is planning a tour- show casing Fischerspooner, Miss Kitten and others in most major cities in the world. Today there are around 60 artists involved with Gigolo and growing, and after four successful years, Gigolo records will be celebrating its 100th release, an event that will take place with a bang. Club Villa Club Villa, known as one of the coolest clubs in Germany- is located in Hell's birth city of Traunstain near the border to Austria- a 1 hr drive from Munich. It's a popular haunt for gigolos and gigolettas from around the world. In true gigolo style the club is designed with a real 70`s feel, plenty of disco balls, red leather padded seats and mirrors and the original bar taken from the Hilton Hotel in Berlin. The Star F*cker night is every Friday with resident DJ-duo Pornostars who are joined by others who represent the eclectic gigolo style. On Saturday's Living Room nights it's `only house music` in Hell's villa. Clubvilla`s unique atmosphere attracts the world's DJ-elite with the likes of Jeff Mills, Sven Vath and many others who come all the way to play in this remote venue. The summer months boast regular BBQ`s, bikini parties and boat parties on the Love Boat travelling up and down the river Traun, also with hit DJ`s. Accommodation and travel is accounted for, they have a deal with the `Parkhotel Traunstein Hof` offering a package for both club and hotel (naturally including a late checkout). A how to get there can also be found be found on the website.
