I think you're absolutely correct in re: the raised issue. Your family experience is completely noble and admirable. It is, however, not the only path. My relatives encouraged me from a very early age to "leave the nest", and consider my decision to move away as a source of family pride. I've moved to 4 cities on two continents since high school, and will probably continue this pattern forever - again, because this is how I was raised.
