Not really a record story but just as painful. I've always been a fan of Mr. D Hirst, so when I found out that a good friends girlfriend had become his PA, I thought I'd be cheeky and ask if I could get some discount on a picture. Bingo, one of his dot paintings was up for sale, I put my pitch in and got it. I spoke to the Gallery and they got it framed to the artists spec and sent it off via UPS. For 3 days I watched for the van, until in finally arrived.

The receptionist signed for it and came down to our offices with what looked like a bag of fire wood and broken glass wrapped in bubble wrap, and that's exactly what it was - the painting was in a thousand pieces and was making a great sound when you gave the bag a shake. I called the gallery up and he was gushing, "do you like the picture Martin, we have a some prints you may be interested in". I asked him if he'd like to hear the painting..."What?" I held the phone to the bag and gave it a good shake. He then spent the next 20mins saying sorry in every way possible. He sorted me out with another painting in the end...Mr Hirst was very p1ssed off tho...

A few years back friend got a record on mail order that turned out to be a
bit warped on one side. Warped to the point that it would knock the needle
out of the groove. It was something on Subsounds or FutureFrontier if I
remember correctly. Anyhow, someone (jokingly) suggested that he try
wrapping the record in a cloth and ironing it. Having nothing to loose (and being ridiculously ignorant about vinyl at the time) he tried it. He now has
a perfectly flat record with a perfectly clear imprint of an iron burned
into it...

I guess he should have used thicker cloth ;-)

I once had a copy of Silent Phase - Psychotic Funk that was a wee bit
warped due to a maladjusted heating system.

I tried to bend the warp out. I bent it a little too far and it exploded. :(

on the site there was a terrible tale of a rare kenny larkin EP that was
sat
upon and destroyed. i have a copy of that very EP and i know i would be
quite gutted if it was damaged. anyone else have any tragic tales of
damaged detroit vinyl?
