I feel that in the mainstream media terms "nostalgic" and "current/trendy" are used in periodical cycles. In my opinion this applies also, for example, to clothing fashion.
For example: 80's was trendy a while ago, now it's beginning to slip into the nostalgic mode. Techno was trendy a while ago, it's been nostalgic for a time, and probably it'll be trendy after a while again (in some form or another).
So, current "hip" music is somewhat pseudonostalgic in a sense that it utilizes modern technologies, and pseudocurrent in a sense that it utilizes old and nostalgic source material.
Those "characterizing" terms are matter of marketing and playing with promotional words.
