About a year and a half ago, as a radio host, I recieved a promo CD which was
called "white horse" and was the same song redone by an artist called
"Kumagai" if I'm not mistaken. The label was V-Wax (not to be confused with
esteemed techno label V-Max), maybe from Cali or in the south - I'd have to dig
through old press releases to be sure. In hindsight, it seemed to be a move
similar to the Jaguar fiasco - the
"artist", while at least mentioning Laid Back in the liner notes, claimed that
he was not "biting" the original artist(s), as it was a "cover" version - the
track was rerecorded, not sampled. Just like Jaguar.
There were 6 different mixes, in different styles. Most in my opinion most were

tastelessly abusing the original version (remembering the terrible d'n'b
attempt), but 1 mix (maybe it was the classic mix) sounded almost *exactly*
like Laid Back's original and I also enjoyed The "speed garage" mix, which
sampled heavily from one of the tracks on Juan Atkins excellent WaxTrax
MasterMix - either "Lara's theme" by BJ Robson (Paper) or an adjacent track in
the mix. All artistic ethics aside, and on a strictly
aesthetic level, I liked it. It was a total rip-off, but it was pretty
accurate. If I ever saw the original, of course I would snag it, but I
don't think it is available, so this CD gets popped in every once in a while as
the next best thing.

Sidenote: Patrick Russell, who is probably the best unknown HOUSE (read: the
deep, funky, thick, soulfull sh*t) DJ in Detroit, will also drop this (the
original-that is)from time to time.

The release was a 6-track CD with
various mixes
in different styles - If I remember correctly, it was the speed garage mix that
