Assault played on Friday 17th at The End. The night was a Mo'Wax one so they
had some Scratch Perverts guy (pretty good), James Lavelle (yawn) and then
they had Magic Mike who was pretty good. Started off all hip-hop, lots of
scratches, cuts, doubling and then played, bizarrely, Josh Winks _Higher
State of Conciousness_ but after a while moved into some bass stuff. Assault
tweaked the decks and then started dropping Assault Rifle/Electrofunk stuff
at +16. Cool to hear (esp. in the UK) but he was cutting the decks up a lot,
sometimes really well, sometimes not so well and never really got the floor
rocking after Magic Mike. He was playing some 4/4 stuff so fast.
Interesting stuff though - great to hear it being played out in London.
Jaguar mixes are great - none of them are real departures from the original
but they all use the strings in different ways. The Mills mix is non-typical
of Jeffs work with new strings and tougher percussion. The Octave One mix is
probably the most different, more loopy. Mad Mikes mix is just lush - more
of a re-arrangement of the original with less kickdrums and more strings
that remind me of older UR material. Great 12"
