Dear 313, I have recently (today) finished the rough draft of my thesis on Detroit techno. It deals with some of the things that are brought up so often on this list, particularly race. I interviewed some incredible people including Dan Sicko, Brendan Gillen, and Anthony Shakir, and I dug through a lot of old archives and microfilms.
It can get kind of theoretical at points, but I guess that's the way it goes with academic work. Still, I did my best to make it readable. Please consider this my contribution to the many threads on techno and race. And if you feel like it, let me know what you think.
