I'll fifth the idea about taking the PCH; it is gorgeous. I have driven all over the states and that is one of the most beautiful drives I have taken. Taking the 5 will get you there, but it is just another freeway. On another note, check out Amoeba Records in SF in the Upper Haight area. There is one in LA, but I hear it isn't as good.
