We use Pluggers Excel plugin - works really well for both importing and creating Excel documents: https://www.pluggers.nl/product/xl-plugin/
The problem with exporting form Excel to a text file is if any of the cells contain return or line feed characters, that will mess everything up as 4D will then think that each of those returns or line feeds represents the end of a row (record).
