#365: 2.6.22 kernel upgrade breaks nvidia xorg

Symptom:

Following a dist-upgrade, system does not start X when rebooting - gives
error that no valid screens are found.
Environment:

AMD64
Prior to upgrade, I was using the nvidia setting in xorg.conf.
I HAVE BACKPORTS ENABLED, and gmome 2.18 as the desktop.
Workaround:
------------
Use vesa in the short term.
