Which device specifically?
lspci |grep Network
You should get something like this:

00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 03)
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN
[Shiloh] Network Connection

Obviously the second one is the wireless interface.

Is there a wireless interface?
iwconfig

If there is an interface (the previous command will tell you if the
system has a recognizable wireless interface) which driver is being loaded?
lsmod |grep 802
You will get output similar to;

vmci 58024 0
mac80211 232016 2 iwlagn,iwlcore
cfg80211 44288 3 iwlagn,iwlcore,mac80211

The mac80211 line has the wireless driver listed, in my case it is the
intel iwlagn adaptor.

How are you trying to connect? Are you using the NetworkManager applet,
a script, manually running iwconfig? Details are important as the
wireless stack has been changing a lot lately (or more accurately the
work that has been happening for years is now getting released).

Also, there is no released Debian 2.6.29 kernel (I checked oldstable,
stable, testing, and unstable). Which kernel specifically are you
referring to and in which version is it running?
